The arc of Abraham Ancer’s professional career has been nothing if not unpredictable. In fact, he was born this way.
Ancer holds dual citizenship in both the United States and Mexico — he was born stateside and raised in Reynosa. He has hinted that he may well use both sides of that dual citizenship in order to compete in match play events throughout the golf calendar. He has already competed under the Mexican flag as part of the international team at the Presidents Cup, and has flirted with the idea that, if he were to be in contention to earn a spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team, he would consider flipping to the flag of his birth country.
But that’s not where things end in the unpredictability of Abe Ancer. He is also the only professional golfer to own his own Tequila company — Flecha Azul — which he indulges with occasionally reckless abandon.
When it comes to golf courses, Ancer is no different. What kind of top course list would you expect from a guy who ended up in the final twosome on Sunday in his first Masters? Eclectic. Abe’s faves run the gamut, from Open stalwarts to Augusta National and a studio he co-owns in Texas. Now about getting “smoked” on his home course …
Abraham Ancer’s top 10 courses in the world
1. Club Compestre Reynosa — Reynosa, Mexico (Architect Unknown)
Ancer’s first home course. “My dad took me to this golf course ever since I was in diapers, really.”
2. Royal Melbourne — Melbourne, Australia (Alister MacKenzie)
The site of Ancer’s Presidents Cup debut, where he went 3-1-1 for the International Team in 2019.
3. Augusta National — Augusta, Ga. (Alister MacKenzie)
4. Metropolitan — Victoria, Australia (J.B. MacKenzie, Dick Wilson)
5. Peachtree — Atlanta, Ga. (Robert Trent Jones & Bobby Jones)

6. Royal Portrush — Portrush, Northern Ireland, U.K. (Harry Colt)
7. Oak Hills — San Antonio, Texas (A.W. Tillinghast)
Ancer’s home course in San Antonio, a 100-year-old A.W. Tillinghast design. “I play here with a bunch of young guys. Sometimes I get smoked!”
8. Carnoustie — Carnoustie, Scotland (Old Tom Morris, Alan Robertson, James Braid)
The site of Ancer’s major championship debut (2018).
9. Portmarnock — Portmarnock, Ireland (William Pickeman)

An unassuming driving range and fitting studio that Ancer co-owns. It’s where he tinkers with clubs and swings alike.
