J.J. Spaun finally has his follow-up victory to his U.S. Open breakthrough as he survived a marathon Sunday at the Valero Texas Open to earn his third PGA Tour win.

Spaun’s clubs remain nearly exactly as they were at Oakmont 9 months ago, with one minor exception, as Spaun opted for a 7-wood this week instead of the 5-wood he used at Oakmont. Both clubs are TaylorMade Qi10s with Mitsubishi Diamana PD shafts, so it’s simply a course-dependent adjustment for Spaun.

What has changed are his sponsors. While his main endorsement contract with Cleveland/Srixon covers his ZXi irons, Cleveland wedges and Srixon balls, Spaun has a brand new partnership with L.A.B. Golf, just announced this week.

“I switched to L.A.B. and had an amazing season, including a U.S. Open win. I love working with the L.A.B. guys,” Spaun said in the announcement. “The fact is, these guys know things about putters and putting that nobody else does. The margins out here are so small, and I want every advantage I can get. L.A.B. is that advantage. The golfers who do their homework will figure it out.”

Spaun was the first player ever to win a major championship with a Lie Angle Balanced, “zero torque” or low-torque or putter last June. He capped it off with a memorable 64-foot bomb on the 72nd green and tossed his L.A.B. Golf DF3 putter in the air.

Like at Oakmont, Spaun again put the Valero away by driving the 71st green, but this time, he drilled the 9-foot eagle putt to go ahead by a shot at 17 under, a total no one could match on a windy, cold and wet day at TPC San Antonio.

But where Spaun really did his damage this week was with his irons, as he was second in the field in Strokes Gained: Approach, picking up 6.7 shots.

He has a unique set of Srixon ZXi irons, gaming the players’ distance ZXi5 model for his 4-iron and the more compact ZXi7 in the 5-PW.

The unusual part is that Spaun’s iron set doesn’t have the typical half-inch length and half-degree lie increments that most players use. Instead, Spaun’s short irons are standard length, while his mid and long irons are slightly shorter than standard. Meanwhile, his lie angles jump by a degree for the 6-7-8-irons.

Spaun isn’t a unicorn for this, but it’s still rare on Tour. Pros and OEM reps spend hours and hours testing clubs to make sure each one is dialed for the individual player. That’s exactly what the Srixon team has done with Spaun.

Gary Woodland is back in the PGA Tour winner’s circle for the first time since his U.S. Open win almost seven years ago.

The 41-year-old recently opened up about his struggles with PTSD following brain surgery in late 2023. Now he’s back among the game’s elite, leading the tour in driving distance and clubhead speed while earning his fifth PGA Tour victory this week at the Texas Children’s Houston Open.

His driving was one of his keys to victory this past week, as he ranked seventh in distance at nearly 322 yards off the tee while placing 15th in Strokes Gained.

Woodland plays one of the coolest driver setups on the PGA Tour, opting for Cobra’s prototype OPTM Max LS-K driver, something Cobra Tour Rep Ben Schomin described as a “living prototype” earlier this season. It’s essentially a lower-spin, fade-biased version of Cobra’s retail Max K driver that was specifically built with Woodland in mind when he started playing Cobra’s DS-ADAPT Max-K driver last season.

“This is my 18th year on Tour and the drivers that I’ve played when I’ve driven the golf ball well have been back-weighted,” Woodland told GOLF in February, referring to the deeper CG of drivers designed for game-improvement players. “Everyone wants front weight to get the spin down and distance. But for some reason, I’ve been back with it, and I started struggling with spin last year. I went through all the drivers, and I got to their Max K driver last year, and it was low spin for me for some reason.”

With that deep CG, Woodland prefers a lower lofted head, which is why his driver measures in at just 6.4 degrees of loft. He also pairs it with a telephone pole-like Ventus Black 8-X shaft.

Schomin and Woodland also made a major change this week just before his win. Woodland made his second iron shaft change of the season.

He started the year playing a softer Nippon Modus 130 X after he fell in love with the feel when he added it to the bag last fall. But Schomin never saw it as the best option for him, and they went back to the Dynamic Gold X100 last month.

That was the shaft he initially switched to from the KBS C-Taper 130X he used most of last year because he was trying to neutralize his severely out-to-in path.

“So he was trying to neutralize his delivery a little more and not swing so left,” Cobra Tour Rep Ben Schomin told GOLF. “Some dynamics changing in there, and as his swing is becoming more neutral, the X100 was really good. He felt like he could hit a little draw, felt like he could hit a little cut.”

Woodland’s delivery dynamics impart a ton of spin on the ball, which is why he was in the C-Taper, but he felt that the shaft was too boardy last year.

But, with all the speed Woodland has picked up this year, the X100s weren’t scrubbing enough spin, and Woodland was finding his irons were coming up short.

“So X100 just is starting to feel a little bit too soft. And again, going back to C-Taper 130X is something he’s played with for a long time. Immediately, we knew at some point he was probably going back into them.”

Schomin was so sure Woodland was going back to the C-Taper that he kept a set of King MBs with the shafts on the Cobra Tour Truck for Woodland. That set sat on the Cobra truck for nearly a year until earlier this month when Schomin said Cobra tech James Posey sent them back to HQ because they were taking up space.

“He’s like, ‘Is that set still on there?’ and I was like … ‘No, we had just sent them back.’ So I had to go build a new set of irons,” Schomin said. “We just did 5, 7 and 9 iron to get a quick comparison. Sure enough, he’s like, ‘Yeah, these feel great.’ Then I went and completed the rest of the set.”

With as much speed as Woodland has gained, he actually said the C-Tapers, one of the most stout profiles out there, feel much better than before.

“Now he’s like, no, they actually feel good,” Schomin said. “They don’t feel quite the same as X100, don’t get me wrong, but they definitely feel like I’ve got the speed now moving those things.”

In an industry obsessed with the “new,” Fitzpatrick is a refreshing anomaly. Just seven months after he finally broke through at the Wyndham Championship, Cameron Young notched his first marquee PGA Tour victory at the Players Championship.

Young plays a full set of Titleist clubs, but it has become one of the more unique ones on their staff.

Last week, Young made a change, going from the Titleist GT2 he used at the Wyndham to a new, 11-degree GT3.

The higher loft of the lower-spinning GT3 head helped him further optimize his numbers, just as switching to the Pro V1x Double Dot Prototype did last summer.

The prototype Double Dot flies lower than his previous Pro V1x, so Young worked with the Titleist team to see what he needed to do to optimize the carry with his driver, Titleist Director of Player Promotion J.J. Van Wezenbeeck said.

Working together with Titleist’s Director of Tour Research & Validation, Fordie Pitts, the team determined Young needed a touch more launch. The 11-degree GT3 (lofted down by .75˚ in the D1 setting) succeeded in raising the launch from 9 degrees to 11 while only increasing the spin from 2400 to 2500 rpm.

Young was one of the first players to switch to the Double Dot last summer, taking advantage of its low-spinning properties. The ball was also briefly put into play by Bryson DeChambeau.

Clearly, the driver was working on No. 18 at TPC Sawgrass as Young pummeled a 375-yard bomb, the longest tee shot in the shot-link era on the iconic finisher.

That’s not the only change Young made from last year. He’s also switched both his fairway wood and his hybrid to the high-launch GT1 models.

The GT1 hybrid is the more intriguing switch as it lets him play with the same Diamana PD 80 TX shaft that’s in his 3-wood.

“For Cam Young, we were trying to create more of a 5-wood type golf club, so we were able to build it with a 5-wood shaft and use a .335 tip on the interior diameter, but a hybrid outside diameter [on the hosel]. We get kind of the best of both,” Van Wezenbeeck told GOLF last month.

Both GT1 clubs have front-to-back interchangeable weights, and Young plays heavier weights forward to lower ball flight and spin.

Akshay Bhatia is now a three-time PGA Tour winner after defeating Daniel Berger in a playoff at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Interestingly, he’s won each of those three events, starting in 2023, with largely minimal changes to his golf bag over that span, including the same driver.

It’s rare for a player to use the same driver on the PGA Tour for going on five seasons, but Bhatia and his Rogue ST Max LS driver from 2022 seem inseparable at this point. Bhatia switched into the new Quantum Triple Diamond Max driver at the American Express, only to revert back to his old faithful after one event.

Bhatia has a unique swing, with an extreme out-to-in path and an open clubface at impact, which is one reason he doesn’t switch equipment often.

His bag is essentially the same as it was for his last win at the 2024 Valero Texas Open, except for the upgrade to Callaway’s new Opus SP wedges last year and the updated version of his Apex TCB irons.

That includes a Callaway Apex UT 22-degree 4-iron replacement, making him the fourth winner this season to have a utility iron in that spot in the bag, joining Collin Morikawa, Jacob Bridgeman and Scottie Scheffler. More and more often, pros are substituting a 4-iron with a utility iron that prioritizes ball speed retention on mishits and improved peak height.

Bhatia has also played the same shafts for all of his wins, including a Fujikura Ventus Black in all of his woods. Fujikura once again dominated the shaft count this week, with 41.2 percent of the 80-man field playing a Fuji driver shaft, nearly 24 percent higher than their nearest competitor.

Nico Echavarria won the Cognizant Classic on Sunday as the beneficiary of Shane Lowry’s stunning “Bear Trap” collapse over the final three holes.

This is Echavarria’s third career PGA Tour win, but first since joining Cleveland/Srixon last season after he started his PGA Tour career with PXG.

The 31-year-old plays a split set of the company’s flagship ZXi5 and ZXi7 irons, and marks the company’s first PGA Tour victory since a run of three-straight last summer, including J.J. Spaun’s U.S. Open title.

Taking a look at his specs, Echavarria has an interesting quirk in the build of his irons where he uses Nippon’s Modus Tour 120 X shaft in his ZXi5 4- and 5-irons before moving to a heavier 125 X profile. While having a lighter shaft in the long irons isn’t that rare, what makes this really interesting is the 120 g and 125 g versions of the Modus shaft are actually two different profiles.

While we don’t know for sure, the 120 X is probably used to help get his long iron launch up without adding too much spin, while the heavier 125 is stouter for more control throughout the rest of the set.

Echavarria plays a prototype version of the Srixon ZXi driver, similar to the one played by his opponent, Lowry, and Hideki Matsuyama, who won with it at the Hero World Challenge. Ryan Fox also won two events with the ZXi last season.

He also plays the company’s Z-Star Diamond golf ball and Cleveland’s RTZ wedges.

For his fairway woods, Echvararria continues the clean sweep of the season for TaylorMade fairway woods with his Qi10 3-wood. Every winner so far this PGA Tour season plays a TaylorMade fairway wood and all but Echavarria carried two in the bag. His 5-wood is the only remaining PXG club in his bag, a new Lightning.

Jacob Bridgeman broke through on the PGA Tour in a big way, winning the Genesis Invitational on Sunday for his first career victory.

Bridgeman has, in someway, what’s becoming the modern standard for a golf bag on the PGA Tour.

The 26-year-old plays a 4-wood and a 7-wood instead of the traditional 3- and 5-wood, and he actually added those clubs to the bag this week in the form of the new TaylorMade Qi4Ds. Bridgeman previously played an R7 Quad Mini Driver and an older Stealth 7-wood.

“He felt the 3-wood gave him more versatility and was easier to hit off the deck into some of the long par 3’s at Riviera,” TaylorMade Senior Tour Rep Nick Springer said. “He also felt it was a better option for him on the 10th hole for the number and shot shape that hole demanded.”

The new 7-wood spun less than his old gamer, which was something Bridgeman liked.

Club Fitting

With his irons, Bridgeman predominantly plays a set of the popular P7CB, but at the 5-iron, he switches to a 2022 P770, and then plays a 12-year-old Tour Preferred UDI driving iron for his 4-iron.

Until the P7CB was released in 2024, Bridgeman had only played blades for his entire career.

“He liked the clean look from address and slightly higher launch with a cavity back iron,” Springer said. “The biggest selling point, though, was the soft feel and better turf interaction than his blades.

“The 770 5-iron was added to his bag simply find a 5-iron that launched higher and landed softer into long par 3’s and par 5’s. He found the 770 to be a versatile club that he could flight when he needed to.”

Bridgeman originally played 1 degree weaker lofts in his 7CBs, but upon switching to the new TP5x golf ball this season, the added spin allowed him to bend his irons back to a more standard loft spec.

“Jacob is one of the lowest spin iron players on tour so we spent the offseason working on a ball switch and reworking the iron lofts to start and hit his window,” TaylorMade Tour Rep Cory Johnson said. “He noticed in the playoffs that the harder firmer greens were tough for him. This switch to TP5x was made for him to win on the hardest set ups in golf. Additionally, TP5x was 2-3 mph faster with driver.”

With the win, Bridgeman is now the fifth winner in the six PGA Tour events held so far this season to use a TaylorMade Spider putter. He uses the larger Spider Tour model with a short slant neck, similar to Tommy Fleetwood.

“Jacob likes to feel a nice arc at release with his putter and does a lot of practice with a blade to feel that,” TaylorMade putter rep James Holley said. “The Spider Tour short slant has less toe hang, but with the back CG it feels very similar to him as a blade. The mallet gives him more forgiveness and consistency with launch. At Pebble, he wanted to check launch and loft to make sure he had enough launch for the Poa greens. He was launching it perfect with just over 2° of launch. He likes the clean Spider Tour top with just a single dot that he sharpies on.”

Collin Morikawa survived brutal conditions late Sunday and a long wait on 18 to win the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, returning to the winner’s circle for the first time since the fall of 2023.

Morikawa started his weekend charge with a remarkable Saturday 62 in which he actually lost strokes putting, a common theme over the past year for the two-time major winner.

But on Sunday, Morikawa gained 1.6 strokes putting en route to a final-round 67 to win by 1 over Min Woo Lee. He did so with the help of a new Spider Tour X flow neck putter he added to the bag last week. Turns out the prototype putter wasn’t actually made for him.

The putter originally belonged to Kurt Kitayama, who gave it to his brother. Morikawa saw Kitayama’s brother, Daniel, playing with the putter, which also has a unique “back T” alignment aid, and asked to borrow it. He put it in play at the WM Phoenix Open.

Morikawa has used no fewer than a half-dozen different putters over the past few seasons, but it was the new prototype Spider Tour X that finally got him back in the winner’s circle. His victory makes it four of five wins to start the year for a Spider putter.

While the putter finally provided servicable results, Morikawa’s iron game was dialed as he picked up a career-best 6.59 Strokes Gained: Approach in his third-round 62, the best of any round in the tournament’s history, according to stat guru Justin Ray.

Morikawa has a unique combination set of TaylorMade irons, using the older model P730 blades in his short irons, P7CBs in his 5- and 6-irons and then moving to a PDHY utility iron for his 4-iron.

The PDHY is the highest-launching model in TaylorMade’s utility iron lineup and is rarely used on the PGA Tour. But Morikawa switched to it late last year and used it to hit his crucial approach shot at the 72nd, setting up the winning birdie.

Morikawa’s win is also the first for TaylorMade’s Qi4D driver and 2026 TP5x golf ball on the PGA Tour. He made changes to both in recent weeks.

During testing this week, Morikawa found greater consistency in launch and spin with the TP5x compared with his previous TP5. He also found that it cut more easily and was more predictable in high winds, given the lower spin.

Morikawa also switched his driver shaft a week ago in Phoenix, moving from the Mitsubishi D+ Limited 60 TX shaft he has used since 2020 to the newer Diamana Whiteboard 63 X. But the change was short-lived, as Morikawa switched back to the D+ on Friday. He lost nearly .3 strokes off the tee in Round 1 and then gained nearly 3 strokes off the tee the rest of the way.

Morikawa also added two Qi4D Tour fairway woods to his bag this season, with the 3-wood replacing his longtime gamer SIM Ti from 2020. The victory means each of the first five PGA Tour winners this season has played two TaylorMade fairway woods.

Anthony Kim’s once unimaginable comeback is now validated after he picked up a shocking win at LIV Golf Adelaide.

Kim last won a professional golf tournament 16 years ago at the Shell Houston Open and hadn’t finished in the top 25 at all during his first two years on LIV Golf. But after re-earning his spot in the league through their promotions event, Kim took down Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau on Sunday in Australia to hoist a trophy once again.

Before Kim’s 12-year hiatus, he was a Nike staff player and played nearly a full bag of Nike clubs in his last victory.

Since returning, he has had no equipment sponsorships, and his bag has rotated quite a bit. Just like his bag in 2010, he’s still playing muscle-back irons — now the TaylorMade P7TWs — with True Temper Dynamic Gold S400 shafts and a Scotty Cameron blade putter.

Just three weeks after Chris Gotterup won with Bridgestone VS Black Proto, he’s now scored the first official win for Bridgestone’s new Tour B X Golf ball.

Gotterup is somewhat rare in terms of gear, as he’s a Bridgestone staffer who uses only their irons and golf balls. Gotterup games the 220 MB irons, which are the first clubs Bridgestone has released since 2019.

But the company’s primary product on the PGA Tour is its golf balls, which it recently refreshed with a new VeloSurge core material to increase ball speed.

Gear

Gotterup, along with fellow Bridgestone staffer Jason Day, participated in player testing for the golf balls and showed an average increase of 2.3 mph in ball speed and 8.7 yards of added distance with different new Tour B golf balls. Tiger Woods also said he saw an increase in ball speed and confirmed he would use the new ball upon his return to competition in 2026.

The rest of Gotterup’s bag includes a Ping G440 LST driver, a TaylorMade mini driver, as well as TaylorMade MG5 wedges and a Spider Tour X putter. The win now means three of the first four events of the PGA Tour season were won by a Spider Tour X after Scottie Scheffler won the American Express, joining Gotterup’s season-opening win at the Sony.
