You’d be crazy to bet on world No. 1 Nelly Korda missing a cut. But if you had to, this week might have been the time to do it, on the occasion of the Evian Championship, the fourth of five majors on the LPGA calendar.

For one, Korda sounded tired heading into the tournament at the scenic, hilly Evian Resort in the French Alps. Like most of the players in the field, she was playing her second major in three weeks and adjusting to a new time zone. “Trying to prioritize sleep and rest,” she said. “It’s a lot, definitely.”

For another, Korda’s record at the Evian has been less than spectacular, with just two top-10s in nine appearances before this week. Asked on Wednesday to describe “her relationship” with the property, Korda said, “I don’t know. It’s Evian. That’s all I’m going to say, is that it’s — I’ve hit some really good shots and ended up in some really bad places and hit some bad places and ended up in good places.” Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

You’d also be crazy to bet on the other world No. 1, Scottie Scheffler, missing a cut. But if you had to, this week might have been the time to do it, on the occasion of the Scottish Open, the lead-in event to the fourth and final major on the men’s calendar, the Open Championship.

The case against Scheffler was weaker than the case against Korda, but if you were seeking betting ammo, you’d quickly have discovered that Scheffler has never exhibited his best stuff on the Tom Doak design at Renaissance Club. That’s not to say that Scheffler has stunk it up — before this week, he’d had two top 10s and a MC at this event — but he just hadn’t been a world beater. “A golf course I feel like I can play well on,” Scheffler said Friday. “I just haven’t for some reason.”

Guess what, though? Those crazy bets would have come in.

On one of the weirder Fridays in the modern annals of pro golf, Nelly Korda and Scottie Scheffler both went home early. Korda posted 74-69 to miss the Evian cut by one, marking her first missed cut in 34 starts, a roughly two-year run; Scheffler posted 68-72 to miss the Scottish Open cut by two, marking his first missed cut in 78 starts, a roughly four-year run. According to stats whiz Justin Ray, the double trunk-slam marked the first time since the 2006 inception of the Rolex Rankings that the men’s and women’s No. 1s both MC’ed on the same day. That’s the thing about the great ones: Even when they’re not so great, they still find ways to make history.

What went wrong? Korda didn’t speak to the press after either of her rounds, but clearly she was undone on Thursday when she played her first eight holes in one under and the last 10 holes in four over, and required 34 putts. On Friday, she bounced back, just not far enough back. Facing crucial birdie tries in the 8- to 10-foot range on 17 and 18, she left both putts short.

Scheffler did speak to reporters, following his three-bogey 72 on Friday. He didn’t play all that poorly, he said; he just didn’t hit his approaches close enough to give him makable birdie tries. “That’s how you shoot over par,” he said.

Scheffler added he didn’t have the best luck, either. A gust here, an unfortunate roll off a slope there. On 8, his drive found a divot hole. But that’s links golf. “This golf course can be just tough at times; there’s some humps and mounds out there,” he said. “I didn’t really feel like I played that bad.”

Scheffler won’t have to wait long for a chance to recalibrate. The Open Championship starts in six days, at Royal Birkdale, on England’s northwest coast. Korda has a bit longer to lick her wounds. She has an off week and then will get back at it at the Women’s Scottish Open at Dundonald Links in Ayshire.

Looking for another bet? Smart money says both players will use those weeks to start new cuts-made streaks.

NORTH BERWICK, Scotland — There once was a time when Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm competed against each other constantly. Think back to the spring of 2023, when Scheffler and Rahm were trading wins on the PGA Tour, and the latter snatched the World’s Best Golfer title from the former.

(What a lovely time that was.)

Rahm was then in the middle of a Tour-best 25-straight cuts-made streak that expired only because he had to withdraw from the Players Championship with an illness. Scottie Scheffler won that week, by five. In the process, Scheffler made the weekend for the 11th-straight time, and until this week here at the Genesis Scottish Open, he had played every weekend of every one of his starts since. All 67 tournaments between then and now, amounting to a total of 78 straight cuts made, a run that came to an end when he didn’t birdie the 9th hole at Renaissance Club Friday afternoon.

So … why are we talking about Jon Rahm? Because Scheffler and Rahm are two titans of the game. They may have taken divergent paths since that 2023 season, but this duo can speak to sustaining a competitive baseline as high as anyone else in the world. And more to that point, while Scheffler slumped toward an even-par finish, it was Rahm who climbed back with a second-round 65 to make the cut on the number. He gets two more rounds of tournament prep before next week’s Open Championship. Scheffler does not. And Rahm was surprised to hear about it.

“He missed the cut?” Rahm asked, sounding baffled when I told him the news.

“When it comes to Scottie, it’s not the fact that he hasn’t missed cuts,” Rahm added. “It seemed that every single week he had a chance to win.

“Sometimes you can make the cut and just simply finish 40th and you’re not in the equation of the tournament. It seemed like he was always in the hunt. Like no matter what, come Sunday, the back nine, even if it was an outside chance, he was there with a chance. That was the most impressive part. Including the majors and elevated events. Yeah, it’s incredible.”

It’s true, and while most of the golf world may know it, it bears repeating. Scheffler’s cuts-made streak ended Friday, as did his equally stunning top-25 streak, at 37. The last time Scheffler finished outside the top 25 was 23 months ago at the 2024 BMW Championship. Coming into that week he had won three of his previous five starts. He would win his next two starts. The MC looks like an anomaly now and felt like an anomaly then, but that week of golf at elevation in Colorado, Scheffler finished T33.

What Scheffler’s early departure means for the best golfer in the world isn’t much besides an earlier trip down to Royal Birkdale, on the west coast of England, for next week’s Open. One of the last things Scheffler was asked to do Friday was to speak to the press. I asked him if he was proud of that cuts-made streak, which plenty of the golf world, including the talking head on Friday’s broadcast, will obsess about. The streak may not mean what it once did, as plenty of tournaments in recent years have been held without a cut, but did it still mean something to Scheffler that he always made the weekend?

Perhaps unsurprisingly, he held the same view as Rahm.

“Yeah, it’s a little different now with some of the Signature Events not having cuts,” Scheffler said. “But you know, I don’t think I finished outside of the top 20 or something like that many times this year.

“I’m definitely proud of the consistency, and wish I had a couple days over the weekend to make up some ground. But overall, get down to Birkdale a little earlier than expected and get used to a new course.”

Ahead of last summer’s Open Championship, Scottie Scheffler gave an existential dissertation on life as the world’s best golfer. It was then that Scheffler spoke about the “fleeting” feeling of satisfaction that comes with winning and how his family and faith fulfill the deepest desires of his soul, rather than being the best player in the world.

Five days later, Scheffler romped to a win at Royal Portrush and talked about how “grateful” he was to win the title and how much he would enjoy the victory while noting that the show of professional golf never stops, the hamster wheel keeps turning, and he would be expected to win at his next stop despite his new place in history as an Open champion.

Scheffler’s revelation came in the midst of a torrid 2025 run that saw him win six times, including two majors, while further tightening his stranglehold on the professional golf world. But almost a year later, a different part of Scheffler’s speech rings louder.

“It sucks. I hate it. I really do,” Scheffler said of losing. “That’s why we try to work so hard to not lose, but golf’s a game where you just lose a lot more often than you win. That’s just a simple part of it. In basketball or football, when there’s only two [teams] out there, you can win a lot more than you lose.”

Scheffler then alluded to tennis great Roger Federer’s commencement speech at Dartmouth, in which he talked about being great in a sport where losses far outnumber wins. Federer, who won 103 ATP titles and 20 majors, told students he won only 54 percent of all the points during his career.

“You can work harder than you thought possible and still lose,” Federer said. “Perfection is impossible.”

That’s a hard truth Scheffler has always known, and one he’s experiencing in full in 2026. The latest reminder came Monday at the Travelers Championship, when Scheffler lost a playoff to Viktor Hovland on the first hole after missing a short putt to extend. The Shotlink data initially had Scheffler’s birdie attempt inside 3 feet. It was later amended to just outside 4 feet. It’s one Scheffler should make. One he usually made in 2025, when he played in the final group five times and won all five tournaments. In 2026, Scheffler has now played in six final groups and won only one of those times — the American Express to start the season.

Since that victory in Palm Springs, Scheffler’s season has been defined by slow starts, near-misses and being beaten by guys in full flight.

“That was some of the best I hit it all season, which is a good spot,” Scheffler said on Monday after his loss to Hovland. “Obviously, I think just a little bit, a little disappointed with the results of today.”

Losses are all relative, and most players would be thrilled with a season that includes a win, four runner-up finishes, eight top-fives and nothing worse than a T24. He has nine top-10 finishes in 14 starts. For most, that would constitute a career-changing season. But Scheffler has reached a level of dominance where everything is viewed through a binary lens: win or lose. At least from those on the outside. As Scheffler explained while slogging through a disappointing Players Championship, he judges himself not on a weekly scale, but on a shot-by-shot basis. Was the process good? Did he execute? Is the feeling correct? If the answer is yes, Scottie Scheffler lives with the results. If the answer is no, he gets back to work, solidifying the foundation he’s built — one that’s based on process, feel and control. On the micro, not the macro.

Get all of that right, and you put yourself in position to win more than you lose. But there will be losses; the recipe isn’t exact, no matter the chef.

Tiger Woods won only once in 1999 and 2004. He went two years and four months without a win between 2009 and 2011. Rory McIlroy once went 18 months without a victory. Last year, Nelly Korda went winless after winning seven times in 2024. She chalked it up to being on the wrong side of golf’s “fine line.” All are judged on the same scale as Scheffler. It’s win or “what’s wrong?”

Scheffler has now gone almost five months since his last victory. It’s a blip in the long arch of a career still on the ascent, but one that has presented Scheffler with conundrums he’s still trying to solve.

A week ago, after failing to run down Wyndham Clark at the U.S. Open, Scheffler bemoaned another week that had him chasing on both days of the weekend.

“At the end of the day, I don’t know exactly what it is,” Scheffler said at Shinnecock Hills. “I’ve been pretty good in first rounds over the last few years, and for some reason, the sharpness just hasn’t been there early in tournaments. I haven’t had those leads that I’ve needed in order to win tournaments. I’ve been playing catch-up all year.

“I guess that’s maybe kind of the story, but albeit, this was another week where I feel like I’m continuing to improve.”

The slow starts have been an issue for Scheffler. But he has also constantly run into players on a heater. Cameron Young blew out the field at the Cadillac, where Scheffler finished second. He lost to McIlroy at the Masters but spotted him a six-shot lead heading into the weekend. He lost to Matt Fitzpatrick in a playoff at the RBC Heritage, where Fitzpatrick hit a piercing 4-iron through howling wind to set up a winning birdie. At the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, Clark hit the gas and shot a final-round 60 to win the title. Last year, Scheffler would’ve been able to fend off even those playing at their peak. But this year, his ruthlessly precise game has been just a tick off.

He’s still been the best player on the planet this season — first in Strokes Gained: Total (2.249), third in SG: Off the Tee (0.665) and eighth in SG: Approach (0.601). But his approach numbers are 0.69 shots worse than last year, which has led to a dip in his overall putting, as my colleague Jack Hirsch noted on X. Combine that with some uncharacteristic poor first rounds and opponents playing outstanding golf (Clark, Young, Fitzpatrick) and you get a year that has seen Scheffler face a different Tour reality.

“If you looked statistically, I’m probably not much different than I have been the past couple of years, just a few shots here and there,” Scheffler said after losing to Clark at the Byron Nelson. “A couple things go my way in some tournaments. This season looks a bit differently, but I’ve been playing some solid golf. Just keep putting myself in position, and things will turn my way.”

Things seemed to be turning Scheffler’s way last week at TPC River Highlands. He entered the weekend with the lead for the first time this season and had a two-shot edge on Hovland with six holes to go on Sunday. Then came a rain delay and three straight birdies from Hovland to tie Scheffler. The World No. 1 made clutch par putts in the dark on Sunday night, including an 8-footer on 18 to send the Travelers to a Monday playoff.

All week it felt like Scheffler would leave Cromwell, Conn., with his second win — one that would dramatically alter the narrative around his season. All that stood in his way was a Monday playoff with Hovland, who had gone more than a year since his last win while tinkering with his swing. But the duel lasted just 13 minutes, and Scheffler’s missed 4-foot birdie attempt led to another frustrating loss in a season on pro golf’s “fine line” and a further reminder of something Scheffler has long known — the one he alluded to last summer in Northern Ireland.

Whether your name is Tiger, Rory, Scottie or Nelly: It’s hard to win in pro golf.

Twelve hours before Scottie Scheffler stood over a 4-footer to extend a Monday playoff at the Travelers Championship, he had faced a putt twice that length just to force one.

On Sunday, Scheffler had been in the driver’s seat all round long at TPC River Highlands, but suddenly a furious charge from Viktor Hovland had threatened to make that all come undone. Scheffler had stuffed approaches on 16 and 17 to collect tidy pars to fend off Hovland, but now, on 18, he’d made a rare blunder. His birdie putt, a 25-footer, had ripped past the hole, an uncharacteristically ugly putt that opened the door for Hovland’s own playoff-clinching tap-in par.

Now, with Hovland in the house at 21 under, Scheffler needed a 8-footer to finish on the same number. With the tournament on the line in the dying moments of Sunday evening, Scheffler drained the putt, following it into the hole with a fist pump and appearing for the moment to seize the momentum heading into a Monday playoff with Hovland.

But then, 12 hours later, there Scheffler was again on the same hole, staring down another putt with the same stakes on the line. It didn’t seem like much — an 8-footer for birdie with a touch of left-to-right break — and yet the enormity of the moment was lost on nobody: a make and the tournament would continue; a miss and Scheffler would head home the loser.

Scheffler seemed at worst very likely to make his putt, but in reality it was more of a coin flip: The Tour make-rate from the same distance is 50% to 54%, depending upon the year (53.55% this year) — and that’s leaving out the stress of putting with a Signature title on the line.

Scheffler stepped to his putt, settled and gave it a good stroke, watching as the ball headed toward the hole. But he’d hit it too hard. The ball caught the left edge of the cup, looping around and out. A lip-out for the loss.

The World No. 1 could do nothing but watch as his ball laid just a tap-in away from its home. He put his head in his hands as the crowd looked on shocked. Afterward, there was little he could say.

“Maybe I hit it a little firmer than I intended to,” Scheffler said. “It looked like it got pretty far by the hole and I was playing it outside the hole, so I hit it down my line, just maybe the speed was a touch off.”

For Hovland, the win was just his second PGA Tour title since his breakout 2023 season and the first of a 2026 campaign that has featured no shortage of turbulent play.

“You always want to try to beat the best,” Hovland said. “What he’s been doing the last few years is just super impressive, and I have so much respect for him and his game. To go up against him and have a chance to beat him, I think it’s just super exciting. That’s what you wake up every day to get better, that’s for those moments right there.”

In the end, it was a reminder that golf is a game of great effort … and incredibly small margins.

“It’s been two really, really long weeks,” Scheffler said. “Being in contention both weeks. Any time after a major championship, especially a U.S. Open, I think you’re going to be pretty worn out. But like I said, I felt like I did some really nice things this week, which I’ll use that momentum going into the rest of the season.”

Good morning — actually, more like great morning, because we have PGA Tour playoff golf to enjoy over our coffee and hash browns. The main event: a Scottie Scheffler vs. Viktor Hovland sudden-death duel at 9 a.m. ET to decide the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn.

The golf spilled over from Sunday on account of inclement weather that caused a 83-minute delay in the fourth round. When Scheffler and Hovland, who were playing in the final pairing together, both made par on the 72nd hole, it left them in a deadlock at 21 under for the week, one better than Collin Morikawa. With dwindling light, the playoff was pushed to Monday morning. So, here we are . . . live updates of the action will be coming soon!

In the meantime, check out Josh Schrock’s breakdown of the thrilling fourth round, which included a clutch putt from Scheffler in dying light at the last.

And here’s how to watch the playoff this morning.

The last time Scottie Scheffler won the Travelers Championship, he did so in extra holes, besting Tom Kim in a playoff in 2024.

On Monday, he’ll have a chance to do the same thanks to two massive par saves as darkness descended on TPC River Highlands on Sunday night.

Scheffler started the day one shot back of Viktor Hovland, but the two tossed the lead back and forth throughout the opening 12 holes. The duo had three one-shot swings and two two-shot swings in the opening five holes. By the time they got to the 12th hole, Scheffler led Hovland by two and seemed primed to pull away from the Norwegian.

Then came the downpour. Both Scheffler and Hovland birdied the par-5 13th in the rain before the horn blew due to lightning. After an almost two-hour delay, Hovland came out and birdied 14 and 15 to tie Scheffler.

It was there on the drivable par-4 15th, that Scheffler made the first of two massive par saves.

The World No. 1’s tee shot landed in the left rough in front of the green. Expecting the soaked greens to slow down his chip, Scheffler tried to put a little extra on it to get it to the back-right hole location for an easy birdie. Instead, his chip raced past the hole and off the back of the green. His chip coming back left him seven feet for par. With Hovland already in for birdie, Scheffler needed to make the putt to stay tied. He buried it.

“I thought with it coming out and being a little bit softer, the greens would slow down a touch,” Scheffler said of his chip on 15. “I thought I cozied that one up there pretty nice, and it just seemed like it kept going. But did a good job of staying in it. That’s part of golf. When conditions change, the golf course changes, and you got to take the good with the bad. Did a good job of getting that one up-and-down and keep myself in it.”

The two exchanged pars on 16 and 17 before reaching the closing hole. With the sun about to set, the 72nd hole of the tournament would be Sunday’s final hole, whether a winner was crowned or not.

Hovland split the fairway and hit his approach to 24 feet. Scheffler’s tee shot found the left rough, but he got a good lie and was able to land his approach on the back of the green. Scheffler’s birdie attempt was high the whole way and ran eight feet past the cup. Hovland missed his birdie attempt but tapped in for par, leaving Scheffler with a testy par putt to determine if there would be a sudden-death playoff on Monday or if Hovland would be the champion.

Scheffler surveyed the putt in the dark and poured it in the heart. As his ball found the bottom of the cup, Scheffler pieced the air with a massive fist pump to put an exclamation point on a chaotic day of golf in Cromwell, Connecticut.

“It’s nice to be able to hole those putts, keep myself in the tournament,” Scheffler said after the round. “It’s more fun when you’re making the ones to win, but to keep yourself in it is also nice. Like I said, I live another day until tomorrow, and will be coming out in the morning and see what I can do.”

Hovland said the weather delay allowed him to reboot, something he felt he needed as Scheffler started to pull away from him on the back nine. Once play resumed, Hovland felt he was in more control of his game.

“I played a lot of great golf this week, so I’m feeling pretty good,” Hovland said. “Obviously I would have liked to have gotten it done in regulation, but to have a chance again tomorrow to win, feeling pretty good about that. So try to get a good night’s sleep and be fresh.”

It just wasn’t enough to vanquish the World No. 1. That will have to wait until Monday. Scheffler made sure of it.

Travelers Championship tee times: What to know

Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland rode hot second rounds to the top of the leaderboard entering the weekend and they stayed there on Saturday at TPC River Highlands.

Scheffler, who came within inches of shooting 59 on Friday, got off to a slow start. The World No. 1 was even through 10 holes but then hit the gas, making birdies at 11, 13, 14 and 15 to grab a one-shot lead over Hovland, who spent most of the day matching him shot for shot.

Then came the 18th hole.

Both Scheffler and Hovland found the fairway but Scheffler’s approach settled 25 feet from the hole on the fringe. Hovland, meanwhile, stuffed his approach to six feet. Scheffler’s chip ran eight feet past the hole, and he missed the comebacker to drop into a momentary tie for first with Hovland. But the Norwegian rolled in the six-foot birdie putt to get to 20 under for the tournament and take a one-shot lead into Sunday.

“It was really fun. Just had a great time,” Hovland said of battling Schffler. “You know, it’s been a while since I’ve been in this position. You know, to go head-to-head against the best player in the world and pull off some great shots, it was just a lot of fun.”

Seven top-10 finishes. Thirteen cuts made in 13 tries. And nearly $13 million in prize money. For most golfers, that would qualify as an astounding stretch. For Scottie Scheffler, it constitutes a dry spell. He hasn’t won a PGA Tour event since — gasp! — January at the American Express.

But the World No. 1 is in position to change that this weekend at the Travelers. He enters Saturday’s third round atop the leaderboard, fresh off a scorching 10-under 60 on Friday that featured 11 birdies and one bogey. Scheffler is at 16-under for the week, two shots clear of a resurgent Viktor Hovland, who shot 61 on Friday, and four ahead of Akshay Bhatia and Eric Cole. Cole is seeking his first Tour win.

Scheffler and Hovland tee off in the final pairing Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.

You can watch the third round of the Travelers on TV via Golf Channel, which will air coverage beginning at 1 p.m. ET. Live TV coverage on NBC begins at 3 p.m. ET.

For the last few years it’s taken a pair of binoculars to see anything wrong with Scottie Scheffler’s golf game. Still, he left last week’s U.S. Open bemoaning one troubling trend: all season long he’s been, by his standards, a slow starter, spotting the leader strokes before playing catch-up on the weekends.

“This year I haven’t had many 36-hole leads. I haven’t had any 54-hole leads,” he said.

Well, that didn’t last long.

Just five days later, Scheffler owns the 36-hole lead at the Travelers Championship. After a Thursday round of six-under 64 he set the place on fire Friday morning, making 11 birdies against just a single bogey en route to 10-under 60 and a two-round record at 16 under par.

He leads by two over Viktor Hovland, who could only manage 9-under 61.

Scheffler’s right about his season-long trends: he’s top-three in scoring average for his second, third and final rounds on Tour this year but just 57th in his first rounds. This week he’s improved on both his Thursday and Friday marks.

Scheffler had a few interesting takeaways following the birdie barrage.

Mostly he was dismissive of his own dominance, writing off the difference between a good vs. great round as the matter of a few holed putts.

“Some days they’re kind of hanging on the edge and not quite going in, and then other days they’re finding the bottom of the cup. Today was a day definitely which most of them were finding the bottom of the cup,” he said.

Scheffler would have become the second player in Tour history to break 60 twice, though he admitted doesn’t remember all that much about his 59 at TPC Boston in 2020.

“I wish my golf memory was a little better, to be honest with you. I remember the end of that round, the birdie putt I made on 18, but outside of that, I don’t really remember a whole lot.”

He joked that shooting 59 here wouldn’t have been all that impressive anyway, knowing Jim Furyk has shot 58.

“It was kind of funny. It was like, ‘Yeah, it would be cool to shoot 59, but somebody has already shot 58 here, so it’s not even the course record,'” he said. “You know, Jim kind of takes away a little bit of the special 59 when you are losing still.”

And he shared a favorite saying from the golf world.

“The old adage in golf is you have to be really smart or really dumb. I don’t want to call myself dumb, but like, my long-term memory is not as sharp. Maybe it’s a little bit easier to kind of put some things behind me,” he said. He added that he will occasionally go back and watch old footage of his golf swings when he needs clues — “searching for feels and kind of things that you like” — but mostly he enjoys staying in the present.

Finally he gently dismissed another golf cliche: that it’s hard to back up one great round with another good one.

“I think that’s a little overrated. I think when you are playing good, you’re playing good,” he said. “I just wouldn’t overthink it.”

So far, so good.

CROMWELL, Conn. — It’s common on the PGA Tour for players to carry multiple lob wedges with different sole grinds and switch between them based on the conditions or type of grass they’re playing each week.

Scottie Scheffler has used two different types of lob wedges in recent years, but he doesn’t change them the same way. And if you know anything about Scheffler and his golf clubs, that’s pretty par for the course.

Earlier this year at the WM Phoenix Open, Scheffler made a switch from a Titleist Vokey SM10 .06K-Grind lob wedge, a wide-sole wedge that’s become very popular on the PGA Tour in the last few seasons, to the narrow sole T-Grind, the top Vokey grind on the PGA Tour.

“Sticking with the narrow one for now,” Scheffler said Wednesday at the Travelers Championship. “We’ll see. If I get an inkling to change it, I will. But once it gets in the bag, it’s typically tough for me to take a club out.”

Both are low-bounce grind options but get there in different ways. The .06K’s (to be distinguished from the higher-bounce .12K) wide and flatter sole makes it much more forgiving on tight lies, slightly softer conditions and out of the bunkers. Meanwhile, the T has extreme heel and toe relief for maximum versatility.

Scheffler has won with both wedges throughout his career. He used the .06K to pick up his first five victories, including his first major at the 2022 Masters, but switched to the T sometime between his wins at the 2023 WM Phoenix Open and 2023 Players Championship.

The T — the SM9 model from 2022 — was the lobber of choice for his historic 2024 season when he won nine times worldwide, including a second Masters, Olympic Gold and the FedEx Cup title.

But in 2025, Scheffler went back to the K at the CJ Cup Bryon Nelson, won that week and then won five more times that season, including his third and fourth major titles at the PGA Championship and Open.

Adding in his victory earlier this year at the American Express, the tournament before he went back to the T again, that gives him 12 PGA Tour victories with the K-Grind and eight with the T. The major split is three to one in favor of the K as well.

Where things get really interesting is that performance with each wedge seems to have nothing to do with the course or conditions. Of the five courses where he’s won twice, three of them (Bay Hill, Augusta National and Muirfield Village) he’s won with both wedges.

Since 2022, his strokes gained numbers are nearly identical with both wedges, gaining .363 strokes with the K-grind across 33 events and .371 strokes over 47 events with the T. In that time, he’s never finished outside the top 25 in SG: Around the Green and is a career-high fourth this season.

So if he’s not doing it for the course or conditions, why change three times over the past four years?

“There’s no real rhyme or reason to it, I think just sometimes I put it in imagining, ‘Oh, when we get to the firmer courses, I’ll use the narrower and the soft ones the wider one,'” Scheffler said. “And I use it in the first tournament and I like it and it’s like, actually, I don’t really want to change because I got to adjust to this new wedge and I’m like, oh, that’s too much.”

              Jack Hirsh/GOLF

That checks out with a lot of Scheffler’s behavior around his golf equipment. While many players form emotional attachment to clubs, Scheffler can take that to another level at times.

For instance, his TaylorMade fitter, Adrian Rietveld, told Golf Digest last year that Scheffler replaces individual irons in his set as they wear out, rather than getting a new set (although Scheffler himself contradicted this back in February).

The point is to say that when he gets comfortable, he gets comfortable and will need a compelling reason to switch. Despite the major differences between his two preferred lob wedges, that doesn’t seem to happen all that often. It should be noted that the T-Grind Scheffler has gone back to is the same SM9 version he played in 2023 and 2024, and Scheffler still plays the three-generation-old SM8 in his gap and sand wedge.

“I always switch and I’d be to [caddie] Teddy [Scott] like, ‘Oh, yeah, I’ll use it on these courses and then switch,'” Scheffler said. “And then I get something that I like and I’m like, ‘Gosh, I like this. I’ll use it wherever.’

“The lob wedge is one of those clubs where you have to learn to play from so many different lies that I get like almost in a relationship with the club where you’re like, I don’t really want to let it go, I know it so well.”

Want to find the best wedges for your game in 2026? Find a club-fitting location near you at True Spec Golf.
