UPDATE: The third round of the 2026 Genesis Scottish Open was completed early Sunday morning. Heading into the final round, Robert MacIntyre, Matt Fitzpatrick and Min Woo Lee are in a three-way tie for the lead at 12 under.
An early morning and long day awaits star players like Rory McIlroy on Sunday at the Scottish Open. The same goes for golf fans.

After fog delays hampered play on Saturday at the Renaissance Club, many players were unable to complete their third rounds. So the first order of business on Sunday will be finishing Round 3, which Golf Channel will air beginning at 2 a.m. ET on Sunday.

McIlroy had a rough go of it in the eight holes he played Saturday, going three over to drop to six under total with 28 holes left to play on Sunday. He’s five shots back of the co-leaders Michael Thorbjornsen (who has 23 holes still to play) and Matt Fitzpatrick (28 holes to play).

When J.J. Spaun put his tee in the ground at 9:28 a.m. local time in Scotland on Saturday, he could barely see his target.

With the Scottish haar rolling in off the ocean, visibility was poor at a fog-covered Renaissance Club as the third round began. Spaun, who was in the third group off alongside Adam Scott, peered out over the first hole, barely clocked his target line, and let his tee shot fly into the Scottish fog. Five holes later, when Spaun and Scott reached the fifth hole at a higher point on the property, play at the Scottish Open was officially paused for fog.

🚨 PLAY SUSPENDED 🚨

Round three has been suspended due to fog. #GenesisScottishOpen | #RolexSeries pic.twitter.com/JmUyu26b2U
— DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) July 11, 2026

Fog delays with Jon Rahm 🌫️#GenesisScottishOpen | #RolexSeries pic.twitter.com/xqPgacoTcb
— DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) July 11, 2026

The delay lasted two and a half hours, but Spaun thinks they probably could’ve called play earlier given what he faced on the first hole.

“Yeah, I think the first tee shot was borderline,” Spaun, who shot a three-under 67 on Saturday, said after his round when asked if the delay should’ve come sooner. “You could barely see that bunker down the left about 300 yards. It’s just hard to picture the hole when you can’t even see 300 yards out. But the first four holes it was OK. But then once we got to five, there was no chance.”

So why, with the fog rolling in early in Scotland, was play not stopped until 10:45 a.m. local time? The timing of the delay highlights an interesting rule. While many golfers might assume the rules require players to see their ball land, that’s not the case. Players just have to be able to make out the proper landing area.

Tournament Director Miguel Vidaor provides an update on why round three was suspended at the Genesis Scottish Open 🚨 #GenesisScottishOpen | #RolexSeries pic.twitter.com/Kl5dftIdGx
— DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) July 11, 2026

“It has been playable all morning, marginal. The rule is players are not necessarily entitled to see the ball landing or the flight of the ball,” Genesis Scottish Open Tournament Director Miguel Vidaor said in a video posted by the DP World Tour. “However, for example, they need — for a tee shot on a par 4 or par 5 — they need to be able to see the contours of the bunkers or any penalty area or the tree line. For an approach shot, it’s bunkers around the green and obviously the pin flag.”

Per the R&A, suspension for visibility is left to the tournament committee, but it is recommended that it be stopped once the “landing area” is no longer visible or the contours that allow players to make it out are no longer visible.

It is recommended that, if landing areas are no longer visible to players (for example, due to fog or darkness), play should be suspended. Similarly, if players are unable to read the line of play on a putting green due to a lack of visibility, play should be suspended.

Vidaor said that play was OK until around 10:20 when the fog came in thicker, especially at the higher part of the property. Players were initially held in place for 20 minutes, then shuttled back to the clubhouse once play was officially suspended.

Spaun and those with the earliest tee times were allowed to start because, while visibility was low, players could still barely make out the contours of the penalty areas off the tee box.

Playing the opening holes at the Renaissance in a north wind is difficult on a normal morning. Add in the moisture and the fog and Spaun, Scott and the early risers were greeted by a brutal opening stretch that beat up Viktor Hovland (two over through four), Eugenio Chacarra (two over through four) and Scott (one over through four).

“Got off to a rough start this morning. It was hard to see the flag and where the ball was going,” Hovland said after his round. “I actually hit some lovely shots.”

Spaun was able to navigate the foggy opening stretch at even before the horn blew.

“It was tough. The first four holes is no cupcake,” Spaun said. “I feel like, with the north wind. So it played very long, very wet. It was just hard to see, even. To get through the first four holes at even par was a win for me.”

With tee times pushed back two and a half hours, the leaders, including Rory McIlroy, will be chasing daylight to finish their third round on Saturday.

“It’s been a long day, the fog didn’t help,” McIlroy told the DP World Tour before teeing off. “But yeah, you know, these long summer nights, hopefully we can get it in, and there’s no carryover going into tomorrow.”

And if there is carryover, McIlroy and those with Scottish title dreams will need to hope the fog stays away so they can finish the tournament on time and turn their full attention to next week’s Open Championship at Royal Birkdale as the sun sets over Scotland on Sunday night.

Golfers are a superstitious bunch. Jack Nicklaus famously had to play with three coins in his pocket. Tiger Woods always wears red on Sunday. Tom Weiskopf used broken tees on par-3s. Payne Stewart always went to a new ball after making a bogey — anything to turn the mojo around or keep on the right side of the golf gods.

For William Mouw, that act involved a pot of boiling water and an uncooperative putter.

Last year, William Mouw rode a red-hot putter to a final-round 9-under 61 to win the ISCO Championship by one shot over Paul Peterson. One year later, Mouw returned to Kentucky for his title defense, and the flatstick was less than cooperative. In the first round at Hurstbourne Country Club in Louisville, Kentucky, Mouw lost 2.193 shots on the green. That ranked 132nd in the field.

Mouw finished the first round five shots back of Lucas Glover and chose to do something bizarre to heat up an ice-cold putter.

Leaving the course on Thursday, Mouw joked with his caddie that he planned to put his putter in boiling water overnight to get it hot for a run up the leaderboard. Mouw followed through on his “joke.” When he pulled his putter out of the boiling water on Friday, the golf gods responded.

Mouw went out Friday and carded a bogey-free 7-under 63 that saw him gain over two shots on the greens while making birdie putts of 26, 23 and 20 feet to close to within four of Glover, who holds the 36-hole lead at 13 under

“Jokingly, I put my putter in hot water last night, and it stayed hot,” Mouw said after his round on Friday. “I woke up with it hot out of the water and stayed hot all round.

“Something to change up the mojo,” Mouw said later. “The putter was cold. So it was so cold, and I just thought, jokingly, let’s put this in some extremely hot water. I woke up with hot water on it and it stayed hot all day. Jokingly, it worked.”

Mouw made just 50 feet of putts on Thursday. After boiling his putter, that number jumped to 105 on Friday. Glover had a front-row seat to Mouw going from Iceman to the Human Torch on the greens, but he wasn’t aware of how Mouw got cooking on the putting surfaces.

“Huh, I thought it was a different putter. The other one looked black, this one silver,” Glover said. “I thought it was a different putter altogether. I didn’t ask because he made everything, so I didn’t want to mess up the mojo.

“I’ve thrown a few and kicked a few and broke a few but never boiled one,” Glover said. “I get it. He did, it worked. So he might be melted by tomorrow.”

Sure enough, with his mojo headed in the right direction, Mouw doesn’t plan on letting his putter cool off heading into the weekend. His chances of catching Glover and defending his title rest on it staying blistering hot.

“It just stayed hot all day and I’m going to do it tonight too,” Mouw said.

A word of advice to the weekend grinders out there: You can wear red on Sundays, but leave the putter-boiling to the professionals.

The third round of the 2026 Genesis Scottish Open begins Saturday morning at the Renaissance Club in Scotland.
How to watch Genesis Scottish Open on Saturday

During his pre-tournament press conference at the Renaissance Club, Rory McIlroy sang the praises of golf’s National Opens, as he has done in the past.

Now this weekend the six-time major champion has a chance to add another National Open title to his career total.

McIlroy followed up an opening-round 65 with a 66 in Friday’s second round. That left him at nine under and in a three-way tie for the lead as he vies for his second career Scottish Open victory.

If he were to pull it off, it would be great timing. Next week McIlroy will have a chance to win his second Open Championship title and seventh career major at Royal Birkdale.

NORTH BERWICK, Scotland — There once was a time when Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm competed against each other constantly. Think back to the spring of 2023, when Scheffler and Rahm were trading wins on the PGA Tour, and the latter snatched the World’s Best Golfer title from the former.

(What a lovely time that was.)

Rahm was then in the middle of a Tour-best 25-straight cuts-made streak that expired only because he had to withdraw from the Players Championship with an illness. Scottie Scheffler won that week, by five. In the process, Scheffler made the weekend for the 11th-straight time, and until this week here at the Genesis Scottish Open, he had played every weekend of every one of his starts since. All 67 tournaments between then and now, amounting to a total of 78 straight cuts made, a run that came to an end when he didn’t birdie the 9th hole at Renaissance Club Friday afternoon.

So … why are we talking about Jon Rahm? Because Scheffler and Rahm are two titans of the game. They may have taken divergent paths since that 2023 season, but this duo can speak to sustaining a competitive baseline as high as anyone else in the world. And more to that point, while Scheffler slumped toward an even-par finish, it was Rahm who climbed back with a second-round 65 to make the cut on the number. He gets two more rounds of tournament prep before next week’s Open Championship. Scheffler does not. And Rahm was surprised to hear about it.

“He missed the cut?” Rahm asked, sounding baffled when I told him the news.

“When it comes to Scottie, it’s not the fact that he hasn’t missed cuts,” Rahm added. “It seemed that every single week he had a chance to win.

“Sometimes you can make the cut and just simply finish 40th and you’re not in the equation of the tournament. It seemed like he was always in the hunt. Like no matter what, come Sunday, the back nine, even if it was an outside chance, he was there with a chance. That was the most impressive part. Including the majors and elevated events. Yeah, it’s incredible.”

It’s true, and while most of the golf world may know it, it bears repeating. Scheffler’s cuts-made streak ended Friday, as did his equally stunning top-25 streak, at 37. The last time Scheffler finished outside the top 25 was 23 months ago at the 2024 BMW Championship. Coming into that week he had won three of his previous five starts. He would win his next two starts. The MC looks like an anomaly now and felt like an anomaly then, but that week of golf at elevation in Colorado, Scheffler finished T33.

What Scheffler’s early departure means for the best golfer in the world isn’t much besides an earlier trip down to Royal Birkdale, on the west coast of England, for next week’s Open. One of the last things Scheffler was asked to do Friday was to speak to the press. I asked him if he was proud of that cuts-made streak, which plenty of the golf world, including the talking head on Friday’s broadcast, will obsess about. The streak may not mean what it once did, as plenty of tournaments in recent years have been held without a cut, but did it still mean something to Scheffler that he always made the weekend?

Perhaps unsurprisingly, he held the same view as Rahm.

“Yeah, it’s a little different now with some of the Signature Events not having cuts,” Scheffler said. “But you know, I don’t think I finished outside of the top 20 or something like that many times this year.

“I’m definitely proud of the consistency, and wish I had a couple days over the weekend to make up some ground. But overall, get down to Birkdale a little earlier than expected and get used to a new course.”

How to watch Genesis Scottish Open on Friday

In his pre-tournament press conference at this week’s Genesis Scottish Open, Brooks Koepka sounded happy and confident in his game.

During Thursday’s opening round, he proved it wasn’t all talk.

Koepka struggled early with two straight bogeys to start his day, but that only made his final score more impressive. After reeling off seven birdies over the final 16 holes, the five-time major winner signed for a four-under 66. That put him one shot behind the early leaders.

But with 54 holes left to play at the Renaissance Club, Koepka will need to maintain his high level of play for a chance at winning his first event since returning to the PGA Tour.

Six months into 2026 and the PGA Tour season is nearly over as we approach the final major of the season next week.

The year has been a great one for equipment, and that’s led to some volatility in the bags of the game’s best players. Some moves have been more consequential than others.

While changes last month like Bryson DeChambeau’s prototype TaylorMade driver and Jordan Spieth’s near putter switch stole headlines, others had lasting impacts — and two even led to major titles.

There’s still plenty of golf left this season, but take a look at some of the biggest gear switches of 2026 so far.

Rory McIlroy dabbles with cavity backs

Rory McIlroy kicked off the year strong by gaming a set of TaylorMade P7CB cavity-back irons both at TGL and his first DP World Tour starts of the season in the Middle East.

Just a month earlier at the Australian Open, McIlroy first forayed into the cavity-back long irons, the first non-blades he’s played in competition, and liked them so much he switched to the rest of the set by the weekend.

That set was still in the bag for his first TGL matches and again at the Dubai Invitational.

“If there’s help to be had, I’ll definitely take it,” McIlroy said after an opening-round 66 in Dubai in early January. “And even in Dubai at the end of last year, I hit a couple of 5-irons that I mis-struck slightly, and instead of it maybe coming up five or seven yards short, it was coming up more like 10 to 15 yards short.”

But while the early results were promising, the new cavity-back irons didn’t stick, and he was back in his custom RORS Protos by his first statestide start at Pebble Beach.

He revealed the rationale didn’t necessarily have anything to do with performance, but rather his familarity with what his blades did versus the cavity backs.

“So whatever way the weight of the head was or whether it was the blade length,” McIlroy said in February, “I’d make swings that I feel like I’d make with my blades that would be a very neutral ball flight, and then with the cavity backs, they would just like start to tail off to the right.

Clark, newly a free agent to begin the year, started playing putter and driver roulette at the beginning of the season, trying five drivers in as many weeks to start the year and then moving on to putters.

It even got to the point where Clark showed up to the Players Championship with a putter he bought at his home club’s pro shop.

But ever since Houston, he’s stuck with Ping’s Scottsdale TEC Ally Blue Onset putter and later moved to a new counterbalanced build of the head. Since then, his putting stats have returned to the all-world level that saw him win three times in nine months, including his first U.S. Open.

Rose had won twice in the past eight months and finished top-3 at the Masters for the second straight year. At 45, Rose could have easily continued on his free agent ways, but instead he’s gone all in with the super car maker’s new venture into golf equipment.

It’s something I’ve been involved with from the outset, really helping the engineering team, really testing the very first editions of the club. So yeah, I’ve been kind of working with the project for well over a year, probably.”

The 2026 Genesis Scottish Open continues on Friday, July 10, with the second round at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland. You can find full Genesis Scottish Open tee times for Friday’s second round at the bottom of this post.

Genesis Scottish Open tee times: What to know

Sure, Rory McIlroy is using this week’s Scottish Open to prep for next week’s Open Championship, the final major of the year.

But that doesn’t mean the six-time major champion isn’t trying to win his second career title here at the Renaissance Club. Need proof? Just look at his results from Thursday’s opening round.

Though he got off to a crooked start with a bogey at 10, his first hole of the day, McIlroy rallied in Round 1 to make an eagle and five birdies, including two straight to close out his round. That left him with a five-under 65 and a share of the early lead.

Now the fan favorite and World No. 2 will try to maintain his good form in Friday’s second round.

Despite an erroneous WD scare, Brooks Koepka is in the field at this week’s 2026 Genesis Scottish Open. And based on his pre-tournament press conference at the Renaissance Club, he couldn’t be happier about it.

This week’s event is the 14th start of Koepka’s surprise PGA Tour return following years playing on LIV Golf.

While his comeback hasn’t been completely smooth, the five-time major champion is feeling better than his results so far have shown, both on and off the golf course.

On Wednesday, an open and talkative Koepka revealed what he’s most pleased about so far in his PGA Tour return, while also naming the thing that’s disappointed him most.

Koepka says PGA Tour return has brought him ‘happiness’

When news broke in January that Koepka was rejoining the PGA Tour via the Returning Member Program, it shocked the golf world.

But it wasn’t a surprise to Koepka and his wife, Jena. As Koepka revealed at the Scottish Open, they had been working on his comeback, and keeping their plans secret, for a while.

Koepka admitted it wasn’t “the easiest thing” to keep such a monumental career and life change under wraps. But the relief Koepka experienced when his Tour return became a reality, and the happiness that has followed, are the things he’s most pleased with regarding his comeback.

“What have I been most pleased with? I think — yeah, I think I’ve been most pleased with — this is probably going to come across a little selfish, but just the happiness that I have,” Koepka revealed to reporters on Wednesday. “Maybe a weight lifted off my shoulders, or it’s not — kept it a secret for a little while. So it’s not the easiest thing.”

His play on the course — including four missed cuts and only one top 10 — is not the source of his newfound satisfaction. Instead, it’s Koepka’s wife and son — and the ability to spend more time with them on the PGA Tour compared to LIV — that has brought him “happiness.”

“But I just see the happiness. I look at I’m able to be around my son a lot more. Jena is able to be around and they are able to travel to a lot more events. Things like that, that stuff brings me happiness,” Koepka explained. “Whether I play good or whether I play bad, I walk off the 18th green, my wife and son are standing right there and, it’s cool, no matter — my son doesn’t care if I shoot 80 or 65, he doesn’t know the difference. It’s ‘Da-Da’; he goes that way and runs towards me. That’s cool. Having them around has been amazing and takes a little bit of the pressure away from when you’re playing.”

As for the thing he’s least pleased with since returning to the PGA Tour, Koepka quipped “my putting,” before admitting that his game along with his life are turning around after feeling like he couldn’t “catch a break” on or off the course during his last season with LIV Golf.

“I feel like last year I wasn’t in the head space to actually play good golf, and now that everything is kind of cleared up and I’m in a better — we all have that, right? It’s life,” Koepka said. “Sometimes it’s easy and sometimes it’s difficult. There’s a lot of stuff, like I said, off the golf course, on the golf course, didn’t matter. Didn’t feel like I could catch a break, as a player, as a person, as a family. Yeah.”

That happiness served him well in Thursday’s opening round at the Renaissance Club, where Koepka fired a four-under 66 to get near the top of the leaderboard early at the Scottish Open.

Koepka mum on LIV pros returning to PGA Tour

While Koepka was long-winded when talking about himself, he had few words to spare when the topic of LIV Golf came up.

Some LIV Golf pros are permitted to play this week’s Genesis Scottish Open due to the fact that it’s co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and PGA Tour.

Tyrrell Hatton and Jon Rahm, the latter of whom just settled a dispute with the DP World Tour, have taken up the rare opportunity to win a PGA Tour-sanctioned event as current LIV players.

When asked whether his former LIV tour mates being allowed to tee it up was a sign of pro golf’s future reunification, Koepka said simply, “I’m not a part of those conversations, so I don’t know.”

He was then pressed if he’d like to see a “return to normality” in pro golf, and he again refused to supply an opinion, instead saying that he was “more focused” on himself.

“I don’t have an opinion either way. I’m more focused on myself. I think that’s the one thing I think I’ve learned through all of this is if I can just focus on myself and be the best golfer, best father, husband, whatever, I’m doing more than I want to do right now, and being present with them and play good golf,” Koepka said. “I feel like that’s all that matters to me. What happens to everybody else, I’m not so concerned with.”
