PAYNTR recently launched two new women’s golf shoe models, one of which was a first for the brand.

The PAYNTR Women’s Reserve Classic Collection includes two models: the spikeless Reserve Classic SL, which is available in two colors, and the Reserve Classic RS, PAYNTR’s first-ever spiked model for women.

The men’s editions of the Reserve Classic made their debut in February.

PAYNTR launched its first pair of shoes in 2021 and is among the game’s fastest-growing footwear brands. On the PGA Tour, PAYNTR shoes are worn by Jason Day (who is an equity parter), Min Woo Lee, Sam Burns and Isaiah Salinda. Justin Rose claimed his 13th PGA Tour win at the Farmers Insurance Open last week wearing PAYNTRs, and is among a contingent of PGA Tour, LPGA and PGA Tour Champions players who wear PAYNTRs by choice.

I’m fortunate enough to be in a position within the golf industry where I get to try, test and play equipment that I do not have to pay for. But sometimes, either to replenish my own stock, to test secretly, or just because I really want something, I do spend my own money on golf gear. So while I know that my situation is very fortunate, I still want readers and followers to feel confident when they are spending their hard earned money.

These are my five favorite things that I tested this year that if they were taken away from me, I would buy them again.

Wilson Staff Model X Golf Balls

I have not been shy about my love and infatuation for the Wilson Staff Model X golf ball. I credit the ball for giving me more confidence on the golf course this year than any year previously, and it was the single piece of equipment that didn’t change once the entire year. I put the ball in play super early on this year and it stuck. It’s a spinnier golf ball that’s super stable in the wind, rips on wedges, and still spins in a reasonable window off the tee. There’s very little they could do to improve this golf ball in my eyes, but I’m excited to see what they might do with the next generation.

Mini Drivers

Mini drivers are awesome for so many reasons. And the best part is that the market now has plenty of options. My personal favorite is the Callaway Elyte Mini because it sits in a really nice spin window, it’s incredibly accurate off the tee, and if I really have to hit it off the deck I can. The best part about any mini driver is the versatility in the build. I’ve done everything from build a 42-inch R7 Quad Mini with an 83 gram shaft to a 45″ BRNR with a 50 gram shaft. There’s so much you can do with a mini driver. I’m still not a fan of trying to replace your actual driver with a mini but, your clubs are your clubs. So whatever puts the ball in the fairway is good by me. (If you want to know why I don’t think it’s a driver replacement read my article).

If you’re looking for control, like I do, I suggest trying the Elyte Mini from Callaway. If you’re looking for an absolute bomber, I suggest trying the TaylorMade R7 Quad Mini.

Payntr Eighty Seven SC Golf Spikes

First-off, spikeless shoes are not golf shoes. Anybody who says so is wrong. There are significant advantages to proper golf spikes with replaceable traction. (As a disclaimer, I’ve been working with the Softspikes team for a couple of years now and there’s some research and testing I have seen to prove this, which I can’t wait to continue to share on this platform.) That being said, the Payntr Eighty Seven SC golf spikes are by far my favorites. Right out of the box they were more comfortable than every other golf spike that I own minus the Skechers (yes the Skechers). I can walk 36 holes a day with zero issue, and they are a great combination of stable and comfortable. The only downside I can think of is that there’s only two spikes in the heels, but honestly that’s just me nitpicking. I’ve never had an issue with any slipping. Playing in the rain, walking through the fall leaves, or standing on side hill lies; none of it’s a problem. Plus, they were co-designed with Jason Day, who’s my favorite golfer. So bonus points for that.

Toulon Golf Formula 45

The Toulon Golf Formula 45 is a really unique offering. When Toulon decided to enter the low-torque putter market, they wanted to do something different. They wanted to do something to add to the category rather than just throwing a Toulon-branded option out there for the sake of having an option. The Formula 45 is a 45º toe up putter. It’s still incredibly low-torque compared to something like the standard Miami mallet from Toulon Golf, while allowing the player to more traditionally arc the putter during the stroke. It seemed like Justin Rose would have a challenging approach shot into the first playoff hole at the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind. His tee shot just barely cleared the water left of the fairway, and his ball was sitting precariously above the penalty area line, leaving him little room to stand.

But from 100 yards, Rose stood in and hit a fantastic shot to just 13 feet, turning through onto his left side and holding for a beat before quickly moving his balance right and onto more stable ground.

Rose made par on the first playoff hole and ultimately won with a birdie against J.J. Spaun on their third extra trip to 18 for his 12th PGA Tour title. And the footwear that kept him stable on the first playoff hole was a big reason why.

If you zoom in on Jason Day’s footwear at this week’s PGA Championship, you’ll see a logo that might be unfamiliar: A somewhat nondescript X on a clean, classic yet athletic-looking shoe. Which brand is Day sporting?

The answer is Payntr — a footwear company that launched its first pair of shoes in 2021 and has since been quickly gaining traction with pros and recreational players alike. Payntr is currently the fastest-growing footwear brand in North America. But why?

Payntr’s primary point of differentiation from other golf shoes on the market is the brand’s cutting-edge propulsion technology. Most golfers have heard about the increasing significance of biomechanics when it comes to swing analysis and improvement. But how many are choosing their footwear in accordance with biomechanics principles? That’s where Payntr soars. Every Payntr shoe model features a propulsion plate to help golfers harness ground reaction forces to bring more speed and power to the ball during the downswing.

“Every one of our shoes is based the on-course needs of the golfer and the biomechanics of the golf swing,” said Payntr co-founder and president Mike Forsey, who has 30 years of experience in the golf shoe business, working at footwear powerhouse Nike, Reebok, Under Armour and FootJoy prior to Payntr. “What happens during the golf swing is your feet want to twist out from under you, or rotate. So what does that technology actually feel like? Forsey says it should be noticeable right away.

“You’ll feel it when you’re walking the course, but when you’re over the golf ball during the golf swing — and it happens so quickly — you’re going to feel that stability,” he said. “When we talk about traction for the golf swing, that’s where we can deliver the performance advantage from the perspective of, if your feet slip out from under you, that’s going to adversely affect your score. If you’re not efficiently and effectively harnessing ground reaction forces, you may not hit it as far, and it’s going to affect your performance. So you’ll feel it there.”

In addition to the biomechanics-minded technology in the shoe, Forsey and his team knew that making the shoe as comfortable as possible was still paramount.

“When you’re walking the course, and you’re in your shoes for as long as you are, comfort is going to be your No. 1 priority,” he said. “Tour players are in their shoes for eight, 10, 12 hours per day. So when we look at comfort, it’s not only underfoot cushioning, but it’s comfort that’s, for us in the development-design world, we look at it holistically. So we want to give underfoot cushioning. We want to move perspiration from the inside, but we want to keep water out. We want the shoe to be flexible and lightweight. We want the shoe to fit. We want to choose not only materials but top line constructions that will be comfortable.”

That reputation for comfort is what ultimately drew PGA Tour players like Justin Rose, Denny McCarthy and Mike Weir to the brand. They’re among a sizable contingent of PGA, LPGA and Champions tour players who wear Payntr’s shoes without a deal, simply because they like them. Jason Day is Payntr’s only sponsored player on Tour, and Day became a Payntr equity partner early last year. He performed a 10-month wear-test before releasing his limited-edition signature model, the Eighty Seven SC, in October, which initially sold out in 90 minutes.

Payntr currently offers two silos of golf shoes: Performance and Classic, as well as a number of training shoes. What began four years ago with a single model has now expanded to 72 SKUs — and there’s more to come. That’s pretty satisfying for an industry veteran like Forsey.

“We’re in year 10 of our growth trajectory, but we’re in year four of shipping product,” he said. “We had five players at the Masters this year, and we have 10 people on the PGA Tour playing in our product. Long gone are the days of putting up with uncomfortable (or unfashionable) golf shoes. Now there’s a ton of great options that are stylish and make walking 18 holes (or more) easy on your feet. You just have to find the right pair for you.

Last year, while in England covering the Open Championship, I wrote about how my Payntr golf shoes made walking undulating links courses a breeze. They are ultra-light and comfortable, which is important, but so is the aesthetic — and that’s another reason to love Payntr. Its designs — and there are lots of them — are clean and understated, and there’s a ton of color options to pick from.

Payntr Golf, which launched in 2020, is still new to the golf-shoe game, but it’s been evolving quickly. Now they have several models and colorways, wide-feet options, women’s shoes, slides and a recently-launched line of Trainers for those looking for a reliable gym or running shoe.

More are on the way, too. Major champ Jason Day joined the brand as an equity steakholder last month and wears Payntr’s X 006 RS on the PGA Tour right now. He’s currently working with Payntr’s experts to collaborate on a new model, dubbed the X1 Proto, which Day has already tested during the season. The X1 Proto is expected to be released this fall.
