GOLF STUFF I LIKE

An all-time great on a current great.

Scottie Scheffler won his second consecutive Memorial Tournament on Sunday and while there are 1,000 stats, shots and stories that could sum up the ways in which that’s impressive, I was most struck by the way Jack Nicklaus, tournament host and 18-time major champ, talked about Scheffler post-round. Older generations of athletes can be dismissive of new waves, but Nicklaus seemed intent on proving the opposite. He raved about Scheffler’s game, and included the highest compliment of all: that it reminds him of his own.

The two sat beside each other for Scheffler’s winner’s press conference, which turned into a fascinating dynamic of Scheffler as humble winner (“It’s always special being able to come here and play Mr. Nicklaus’ tournament”) and Nicklaus as his hype man.

“Ben Griffin’s a nice player. Sepp Straka is a nice player. Nick Taylor is a nice player,” Nicklaus said. “[Scottie] knows that those guys are not in his league.”

At one point Nicklaus fielded a couple of Scheffler’s questions for him.

“I’ll answer for you,” Nicklaus said after Scheffler was asked about his killer instinct. “He doesn’t want to brag about what he does. But he has the ability to bring his level to whatever level it needs to be. That’s what good players do. And, you know, he’s not a good player. He’s a great player. I mean, look at the record that he has had the last few years. It’s unbelievable.”

Then Nicklaus said two particularly interesting things in two sentences:

“He reminds me so much of the way I like to play. I don’t think I played nearly as well as he played,” Nicklaus said. “He’s playing better than I played and more consistent. He’s just been playing fantastic, and I love watching him play. Whether it’s here or on the television or whatever it is, I love to watch. Anytime he’s playing, I want to watch.”

That’s a remarkable observation — not just that Scheffler plays like Nicklaus but that, according to Nicklaus, he’s playing at a higher level.

By the end, they were finishing each other’s sentences talking about another great: Tiger Woods, who has won this event more than anybody.

“One thing I think Tiger was really good at was bringing that level of intensity to each and every shot,” Scheffler said.

“On Thursday,” Nicklaus interjected.

“Hungry,” Scheffler added.

“Started the tournament with it,” Nicklaus agreed.

“That’s something I always tried to emulate,” Scheffler said.

And so on.

So what’s it like for Scheffler to sit there and hear this from Jack?

“It’s really hard to put into words what it’s like sitting up here with arguably the greatest player of all time and we’re sitting here talking about stuff that I did today on the golf course. It’s a pretty weird feeling,” he said.

An all-time great appreciating a current great — that’s golf stuff I like.

WINNERS

Who won the week?

Maja Stark won the U.S. Women’s Open thanks to a relentless performance at Erin Hills; the first title on U.S. soil for the 25-year-old Swede was the biggest in the game. She’s now up to No. 6 in the world.

Scottie Scheffler’s Memorial win was the 16th PGA Tour title of his career and came just three years, three months and 19 days after his first win — just sixteen days behind Tiger Woods’ time span and two months behind Nicklaus’.

Nicolai Von Dellingshausen won the Austrian Alpine Open for his first DP World Tour title, completing a journey back to the top of the tour after he’d lost his card two seasons ago.

Trace Crowe won by five at the Korn Ferry Tour’s UNC Health Championship; it’s the second KFT title for Crowe, a 28-year-old Auburn grad who’s from Raleigh, N.C. and won this week at Raleigh Country Club.

NOT-WINNERS

But still winners.

Ben Griffin finished solo second a week after winning the Charles Schwab, Sepp Straka finished solo third two starts after winning the Truist, and Nick Taylor finished solo fourth, his best result since winning the Sony Open in January.

Rickie Fowler played his way into this summer’s Open Championship thanks to a T7 finish at Memorial, taking full advantage of a sponsor exemption. Fellow sponsor invitee Brandt Snedeker shot a Sunday 65, the round of the day, to improve from T38 to T7 and jump 69 spots on the FedEx Cup list in the process. Whether that’s proof that sponsor exemptions work when properly deployed or are proof that sponsor exemptions are anti-meritocratic and far too powerful is a debate we’ll wage another day.

SHORT HITTERS

Five notes of note from the U.S. Women’s Open.

1. Maja Stark’s eyes popped when she was informed that the U.S. Women’s Open’s winner’s check is for $2.4 million. “I didn’t even know that,” she said. What will she do with the money?

“Maybe move out of my studio apartment. That could be one thing. I don’t know … I’m very happy with what I have in my life right now. Having the security for the future, I think I’ll just be very happy about that.”

2. Nelly Korda finished T2, two shots back, which she described as a “heartbreaker” of a result but was a victory of sorts, too; it’s her best result in a tournament that has beaten her up. Last year she was in the midst of a historically good season when a 10 on a par-3 led to a missed cut and “definitely put a dagger into my heart”, she said. This year, though?

“I just need to continue knocking on the door, and hopefully it will open.”

3. The top 10 finishers from this year’s USWO earn an automatic berth in next year’s event. Playing in the final group, Julia Lopez Ramirez needed par at 18 to remain inside that crucial number and made 8 instead. The other side of the coin? Several groups ahead, Hailee Cooper had gotten up and down from 46 yards to earn a top 10, a return trip to this tournament a “life-changing” check for $358,004. Our Sean Zak had more.

4. Kiara Romero was in last place after a third-round 84. Then the 19-year-old amateur, with nothing to lose, shot a final-round 67, the lowest final-round score for an amateur in tournament history.

5. An absolutely bizarre story involved Amari Avery, whose week started with a promising 1-under 71, turned for the worse after an attempted break-in at her rental home and got downright strange when her boyfriend accidentally grabbed the wrong travel bag, leaving with her clubs instead. Avery ended up borrowing the clubs of Gabi Ruffels for her Friday round just a couple hours after Ruffels had played them in the morning round; Avery made ’em work and shot 73 to cruise inside the cut line. Her own sticks in hand, she shot 76-76 on the weekend to finish T45 — but she’ll leave with a heck of a story.

ONE BIG QUESTION

What’s up with Ben Griffin’s glasses?

The universal experience of watching Ben Griffin on TV is that when he pops onto the screen, somebody in the room will inevitably ask, “so what’s up with his sunglasses?” On Saturday he offered an insightful (and comprehensive) answer:

“I see floaters. I have really bad vision,” Griffin said. “So about a year ago is when I started seeing floaters, went to an eye doctor, realized my retina was starting to kind of try to detach itself. I had retinal holes, so I had to go get basically laser surgery to fill in those holes. I had eight retinal holes in both eyes, so I was at risk of losing vision maybe within five or six months had I not gotten the treatment. So I still see the floaters, I had to get the surgery just to maintain my level. Because of that, when I wear sunglasses it’s a little bit darker out, so I don’t necessarily see the floaters as well. So if it’s really bright out and I’m not wearing the sunglasses, I look into the clouds or whatever and I see black stuff everywhere.”

Griffin added that he thinks there’s an additional benefit of the shades, which he identified as Uswing Mojings (the same type Phil Mickelson debuted several years ago): improved green-reading.

“They say the science behind ’em kind of helps with green-reading and I think it’s 100 percent true. I love the ability to see the contrast a little bit better, than when it’s really bright it’s kind of hard to see maybe grain changes from time to time. So seeing contours is definitely a little bit easier I think with the sunglasses.”

How does he feel about the glasses as his iconic look?

“I guess I’m getting to the point where I have more and more fans and people like it, so I’m not going to stop wearing ’em, that’s for sure.”

ONE SWING THOUGHT

From Maja Stark.

How’d a player without a ton of confidence in her game win a testing U.S. Women’s Open?

“I don’t really think I ever felt that my confidence was great. I think that I just stopped trying to control everything, and I just kind of let everything happened the way it happened,” Stark said post-victory. How’d she do that? She stuck to her processes, listened to her comedian caddie and added one interesting chill-out move:

“During the practice days, I realized that, if I just kind of hovered the club above the ground a little bit before I hit, I released some tension in my body,” she said.

RYDER CUP WATCH

The next American tier…

The Memorial had nearly endless U.S. Ryder Cup subplots, particularly on the margins. Russell Henley (sixth in the ranking) had been scuffling and MC’d at the Masters and PGA but earned a ton of points with a T5. Mav McNealy finished T5 alongside him and moved up to No. 8 after a few weeks of slippage. Griffin made the biggest move, jumping to No. 7 thanks to his runner-up finish. The group finishing T7 was particularly compelling, as it included U.S. captain Keegan Bradley (now 16th in the ranking) and human rollercoaster Jordan Spieth (still just 25th) plus Tom Hoge (quietly 14th). Harris English and Patrick Cantlay finished T12; they’re Nos. 9 and 12 in the ranking, respectively.

On the European side, Sepp Straka moved up to No. 3, where he’s a lock for the team. There wasn’t a ton else to report, with a bunch of Euros playing well without shifting the balance of the team (Aberg T16, Fleetwood T16, MacIntyre T20, Lowry T23, Hovland T25).

TEAM USA RYDER CUP RANKINGS

1. Scheffler 2. Schauffele 3. DeChambeau 4. Thomas 5. Morikawa 6. Henley 7. Griffin 8. McNealy 9. English 10. Novak 11. Harman 12. Cantlay 13. Spaun 14. Hoge 15. Berger

TEAM EUROPE RYDER CUP RANKINGS

1. McIlroy 2. Lowry 3. Straka 4. R. Hojgaard 5. Hatton 6. Fleetwood 7. Rose 8. Aberg 9. Detry 10. Wallace 11. Norgaard 12. MacIntyre 13. Hovland 14. Olesen 15. Canter

ONE THING TO WATCH

Scott’s celebration.

There’s nobody doing things quite like Scottie Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, who seems to be some sort of winning savant, delivered a pre-round sermon on Sunday and finished out his day like this:

ted scott, quite possibly the best caddy to ever caddy @jtedscott pic.twitter.com/55PPW26U9z
— TrackingScheffler (@SchefflerLegion) June 2, 2025

NEWS FROM SEATTLE

Monday Finish HQ.

I spent a few days at the Memorial and won’t comment on rumors that I averaged more than a milkshake per day from the clubhouse, other than to say that Oreo is a great start to any combo. Also, if you spend enough time standing on the driving range with a milkshake in hand you will get heckled by players and coaches alike as to what, exactly, your “job” is. I’m just hoping my bosses don’t start asking the same thing.

We’ll see you next week.

Why? Because as soon as Griffin’s mid-round interview finished, the 18-time major champion lit into the controversial format.

“I can’t stand that, the interview on the golf course,” Nicklaus said, before repeating himself. “I can’t stand that.”

His initial comment drew awkward laughs from the Golf Channel announcers in the booth. Then Nicklaus fleshed out his feelings.

“Let me tell you how I think, how I feel,” Nicklaus said. “I mean, seriously, here’s a guy who’s leading the golf tournament, he’s just hit the edge of the rough, he’s got a very difficult shot on a very difficult hole, and you’re talking to him about stuff that totally takes his mind off of what he was doing.”

He then asked the Golf Channel analysts to imagine how Ben Hogan would have reacted if approached to do a walk-and-talk interview.

“How would you think [Ben] Hogan would respond to that question?” Nicklaus asked.

But before anyone could respond, Nicklaus answered the question himself, suggesting any reporter who did so would have put their safety at risk.

“You would not have any teeth left if you did,” Nicklaus quipped. “[Hogan would] hit you right in the face with it.”

Mixed reactions to PGA Tour mid-round interviews

Taking a cue from other pro sports that started the practice years ago, the PGA Tour debuted mid-round, walk-and-talk interviews during the 2023 season. The reaction was mixed.

Max Homa was the first player to get involved at the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open. He went on to win the title that week, suggesting the interview didn’t negatively impact his game.

But after a walk-and-talk interview at the 2023 Masters, Homa did admit it was somewhat distracting.

“It’s like being on a phone call for 10 minutes. It’s not the end of the world,” Homa said. “It might be a shade distracting, but I think if it’s 5 percent distracting and it’s 95 percent something positive for golf, I can get past that.”

A year after his walk-and-talk debut at the Farmers, Homa defended the controversial practice again.

“I think that the walk-and-talk at least was kind of something risky and different, but I think it turned out quite good,” he said at the 2024 Farmers. “I’m sure there’s other variations that we could do, but just in general I think that’s kind of the direction at least, I’ll just speak for myself, I’d like to see golf go do. It’s not too crazy, it’s not too unbelievable to have people do something like that. I thought that it was nice.”

Not everyone has felt the same way.

In an interview conducted after the 2023 Masters, where Rory McIlroy agreed to his first walk-and-talk interview, McIlroy’s former manager Chubby Chandler suggested the interview was one of many the reasons McIlroy struggled to win the Masters. Chandler also claimed Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus would never have agreed to do the mid-round interview at Augusta, as McIlroy had.

Nick Faldo admitted he was “shocked” by McIlroy’s decision.

Two years later, McIlroy finally won a green jacket to complete his career Grand Slam, becoming just the sixth golfer in history to do so.

A crucial question still unanswered about PGA Tour walk-and-talk interviews is whether golf fans enjoy them. Ultimately, it’s likely that will TV viewers’ opinions will determine the fate of the golf-TV innovation.

The change was brought on after Scheffler played a round with the club’s namesake, Tiger Woods, at the 2020 Masters.

As Scheffler told GOLF back in 2022, he was in awe of how well Tiger controlled the golf ball at Augusta, even though Scheffler beat him by five that Sunday, he wanted to try them for himself. He also figured there would be some familiarity given that Scheffler and Woods were both Nike staffers, Scheffler was already playing TaylorMade irons at the time, and he had previously played Woods’ Nike irons.

“What I noticed when I hit them at home was I was able to hit different windows, so when I flighted it down, I could pitch it lower than I could the P730,” he said in 2022. “And when I wanted to hit it up, I could hit at higher. And so I saw more variability in the shots and then the distance control was basically the exact same. I saw the benefits of being able to flight it down and keep it flatter and not have that overspin with a little bit more variety.”

There was also another element he needed to change. Scheffler’s irons were previously one inch long, giving them an unwieldy D6 swingweight. The solution to that issue came from his long-time coach, Randy Smith, and club fitters, who recommended that Scheffler shorten his irons by three-quarters of an inch and make them one degree upright.

Since those two changes in 2021, Scheffler has become the unquestioned No. 1 player in the world, winning 16 PGA Tour titles and three majors. This past week at the Memorial, Scheffler gained 7.26 strokes on approach, good for second in the field. He’s first in the category for the season on the PGA Tour by more than three-tenths of a stroke.

Much of Scheffler’s bag setup remains unchanged, although he did briefly swap out the 7-wood he won the PGA Championship with last week at the Charles Schwab Challenge for his 3-iron. For this week at Muirfield Village, the 7-wood went back in the bag to increase stopping power.

Scheffler’s dominance also underscores the dominance of the Fujikura Ventus shafts in his woods. Scheffler was part of the 39.7 percent of the field this week at the Memorial who played Ventus shafts in their driver, and Scheffler’s Ventus Black model was the most popular choice. The next closest competitor was at 26 percent.

For every shot, every lie, every course, there’s a grind fit for your swing. Finding the right grind to match your swing and playing conditions will give you the best turf interaction, contact and shot performance. Master Craftsman Bob Vokey has spent decades crafting, developing and improving his tour proven grinds to fit players of all levels.Anyone can manufacture a wedge, but it takes a master to turn a piece of high-performance technology into an instrument of creative control. Bob’s six tour-proven grinds are designed to offer maximum creativity, versatility and consistency, all meticulously developed through years of working with the best players in the world.
PROGRESSIVE CENTER OF GRAVITY
SM9 features a progressive center of gravity (CG) throughout the lofts, which optimizes ball flight, accuracy and forgiveness. Using tapered top lines and varied hosel lengths, the Vokey R&D team has raised the height of the CG in the higher lofts, which promotes a lower, more controlled flight. The CG is also forward of the face, resulting in increased MOI, exceptional feel and a club face that simply wants to square up at impact.
SPIN MILLED GROOVES
SM9’s patented Spin Milled grooves are meticulously engineered through a new cutting process to maximize spin and durability. The process starts by cutting the face perfectly flat with a high-speed saw. Then every groove is individually cut based on loft and finish; low lofts (46°-54°) are designed with narrower, deeper grooves, while higher lofts (56°-62°) have wider, shallower grooves.Micro-grooves are individually cut in between grooves, which maximize spin on partial shots. A proprietary heat treatment is applied to the impact area which doubles the durability of the groove without impacting feel, making it the most durable groove in golf. The process is only complete when every Vokey wedge is 100% inspected for utmost quality and performance.

We ran out of ways to describe Scottie Scheffler’s dominance long ago.

Rory McIlroy can talk about his course management. Jordan Spieth can speak to his club-face control. Xander Schauffele can expound on Scheffler’s elite mentality. But there’s one truth: Scottie Scheffler has no equal in men’s professional golf and hasn’t for quite some time. The only thing that has even slowed his runaway freight train of greatness was a freak ravioli incident.

As Scheffler was lapping the field to defend his title at the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village on Sunday, his only true counterpart was 431 miles away at Erin Hills, as Nelly Korda came up just short at the 2025 U.S. Women’s Open. Korda went on a blistering stretch last season that almost perfectly mirrored Scheffler’s, but even her reign on the LPGA has not reached the heights that Scheffler has on the PGA Tour. As Korda was failing to track down Maja Stark to reassert her dominance, Scheffler was busy easily taming Jack Nicklaus’ tough test and keeping Ben Griffin at arm’s length while the rest of golf’s best failed to make him sweat.

Nicklaus spent the weekend in the CBS broadcast booth watching Scheffler pick his way around his championship test. The 18-time major champion praised Scheffler for playing the game as he did in his prime — with methodical precision, an unbreakable confidence and a killer instinct.

“I think that great players are ones who rise to the occasion and ones who know how to play coming down the stretch in important events,” Nicklaus said. “Looking at the leaderboard today, he didn’t have — I mean, Ben Griffin’s a nice player, Sepp Straka is a nice player, Nick Taylor is a nice player. Those were all the guys that were there coming down the stretch. But he knows that those guys, you know, are not in his league.

“I always felt like, hey, you know, I got 144 guys or whatever it might be out there to play,” Nicklaus said later. “I’ve got to play well to beat ’em. Once I got myself into position, you know, to win, then you got to be smart about how you finish it. And that’s the way he’s playing. He reminds me so much of the way I like to play. I don’t think I played nearly as well as he played. He’s playing better than I played and more consistent. He’s just been playing fantastic, and I love watching him play.”

With the rust from his ravioli absence knocked off, Scheffler has three wins and a T4 in his last four starts, including an emphatic victory at the PGA Championship. The feeling of inevitability that lorded over last season has returned, and now the only name that reaches the tongue when it comes to describing Scheffler’s dominance is, of course, Tiger Woods.

While Scheffler still has a long way to go to reach the extended levels of dominance that Woods exhibited during his prime, he continues to put himself in that rarified air.

Scheffler’s wins this season have come by eight, five and four shots. Per golf stats guru Justin Ray, the only players with three or more wins by four or more shots in the same PGA Tour season in the last 30 years are Woods and Scheffler, who both have achieved the feat twice. In defending his Memorial title, Scheffler now has three successful title defenses in his career (Players, WM Phoenix Open, Memorial). Only Woods (23) and Phil Mickelson (five) have more.

Woods was also the last player to successfully defend a title at Nicklaus’ tournament. Woods won the Memorial three consecutive times from 1999 to 2001. Scheffler will have a chance to match that feat next year.

As for what comes next, we can perhaps use history as our guide.

After Woods successfully defended his title at the Memorial in 2000, his next start came at the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, which he won by 15 shots.

Scheffler’s next start? The 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont.

Rickie Fowler made the most of his sponsor’s exemption into the 2025 Memorial Tournament.

Fresh off a solid week at the Charles Schwab Challenge, Fowler navigated Muirfield Village well this week in Dublin, Ohio, going 69-73 on the weekend to finish in a tie for seventh place at 1-under. Scottie Scheffler successfully defended his title with a four-shot win over Ben Griffin.

But with that top-10 finish, Fowler punched his ticket to the 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush. The Memorial Tournament had one Open Championship spot to award to the non-exempt player who finished the highest. Fowler finished in a tie with Brandt Snedeker, who shot a final-round 65, but Fowler earned the spot via his spot in the Official World Golf Rankings.

“Well, we’re heading the right way,” Fowler said of his game on Sunday after earning the spot. “This week still could have been a lot better, but definite positive is going over to Portrush. That’s one I’ve wanted on the schedule. I had a great time when we were there last and had a decent showing as well. So links golf’s my favorite. Portrush is a great spot, so excited for that opportunity.”

Fowler won’t have too much time to enjoy his secured ticket to Northern Ireland, though.

Since he is not exempt into the 2025 U.S. Open, Fowler will play in the 36-hole qualifier on Monday at Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club in Columbus, Ohio.

With one major exemption in his pocket, Fowler hopes to ride the momentum from a positive week at Jack Nicklaus’ place and snag a place in the proceedings at Oakmont in two weeks.

“Long day tomorrow,” Fowler said. “Hopefully, we saved all the putts for tomorrow because nothing went in or wanted to go in today, and that’s been something that’s been good as of late. Still hit a lot of really good putts, just there was a lid on. Yeah, I’m excited for tomorrow. We went and drove the golf course earlier this week. So long day, but go play some solid golf and all should work out.”

Max Homa, Matt Kuchar, Padraig Harrington, Cameron Young and LIV Golf’s James Piot are also in the field for the Kinsale qualifier on “Golf’s Longest Day.”

After winning the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic, Fowler has been grinding to rediscover his old form. He had a tough 2024 season and did not qualify for the 2025 Masters. He missed the cut at the 2025 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club. He was in contention at the Charles Schwab Challenge and the Cognizant Classic but his chances were done in by poor weekend rounds. He started off hot at the Players Championship before being battered on the weekend by TPC Sawgrass.

But Fowler now has posted three top-16 finishes in his last four starts, including a T15 at the Signature Event Truist Championship and a T7 this week at Memorial.

Fowler, who has been adamant that he is doing the right work and is a better golfer than he was during his rise a decade ago, is finally seeing his hour grinding in the background payoff.

“I’m in a lot better spot now versus earlier in the year or going into where I was last year,” Fowler said. “Been fighting hard and putting a lot of work in and trying to stay as patient as possible. Starting to finally see some good things, and that work start to pay off, so I’m excited for tournaments heading up first and foremost tomorrow, and see if we can go play some solid golf and go get ourselves a tee time at Oakmont and go from there.”

Rickie Fowler was given a chance to play his way to Royal Portrush. He did that.

Monday, he’ll have to do it again to get to Oakmont.

Make no mistake, nobody in pro golf is playing better than those two have over the past month. Griffin won the Zurich Classic at the end of April, top-10’d at the PGA Championship, and won last week’s Charles Schwab Challenge. Scheffler won back-to-back starts in May, taking the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and the PGA.

Scheffler opened Sunday eight under and with a one-stroke lead over Griffin. When they reached the turn on Sunday, it was still those two out in front, with Scheffler at nine under and Griffin at seven. The next closest competitors at that point were Nick Taylor at six under and Patrick Cantlay and Sepp Straka, both at five under.

Ben Griffin has been a constant on PGA Tour leaderboards this season.

The 29-year-old has six top-10s this season, including wins at the team event Zurich Classic of New Orleans and last week at the Charles Schwab Challenge. The North Carolina product’s story is well-documented. Griffin once left professional golf to become a mortgage loan officer. But he caught the bug just months after cobwebbing his sticks, and his climb began. While the story of Griffin’s rise has been trumpeted in every corner of golf media, the reason that he wears aviator sunglasses while dissecting golf courses is not.

Until now.

Griffin, who entered Sunday one shot back of Scottie Scheffler at the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village, explained the eyewear on Saturday night, and there’s a lot more to the story than a curious fashion choice.

“Yeah, it’s interesting,” Griffin said. “After learning a little bit more about, like, my experience, I’m a little surprised more golfers don’t. But, yeah, I see floaters. I have really bad vision.”

According to the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, “floaters” are defined as one or multiple of the following in your vision:

Spots, dark specks, or knobby, transparent strings of floating material

Spots that move when you move your eyes – when you look at them, they move out of your visual field

Noticeable spots when you look at a plain, bright background

Griffin went to see an eye doctor who told him his retina was starting to detach.

“I had retinal holes, so I had to go get basically laser surgery to fill in those holes,” Griffin said. ” I had eight retinal holes in both eyes, so I was at risk of losing vision, maybe within five or six months, had I not gotten the treatment. So I still see the floaters. I had to get the surgery just to maintain my level. Because of that, when I wear sunglasses, it’s a little bit darker out, so I don’t necessarily see the floaters as well. So if it’s really bright out and I’m not wearing the sunglasses, I look into the clouds or whatever and I see black stuff everywhere.”

Griffin wears Uswing Mojing glasses, which are designed to help golfers read greens more accurately. According to their website, their story involves Phil Mickelson, who played a pro-am with Warren Fong, a Chinese amateur golfer, in Macau in 2019. Fong was wearing the Uswing glasses when he and Mickelson saw a putt differently. Fong ended up reading the green correctly, and Mickelson began wearing the glasses after that encounter.

“They say the science behind ’em kind of helps with green reading, and I think it’s 100 percent true,” Griffin said. “I love the ability to see the contrast a little bit better than when it’s really bright, it’s kind of hard to see maybe grain changes from time to time. So seeing contours is definitely a little bit easier, I think with the sunglasses. And now, I mean, I guess I’m getting to the point where I have more and more fans and people like it, so I’m not going to stop wearing ’em, that’s for sure.”

Given his rise from mortgage loan officer to top-five in the FedEx Cup, there’s no reason for Griffin to change his specs anytime soon.

Scottie Scheffler holds the 54-hole lead at the Memorial at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio, and he begins Sunday eight under and with a one-shot lead over Ben Griffin, who has won twice this year but would check off the biggest victory of his career if he were to take down Scheffler and win Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial.

Scheffler is the defending champion, although Griffin won the Charles Schwab Challenge a week ago. Scheffler also happened to win the PGA Championship the week before that, so you might struggle to find two golfers playing better than these two right now.

That duo will make up the final pairing on Sunday, teeing off at 2:05 p.m. ET.

“I’ve just got to stay aggressive, continue to execute,” Griffin said. “My game feels really good. Obviously, Scottie Scheffler’s the best player in the world, but No. 1 can be beat. … I want to stack up my game against his. I feel like right now, you know, I beat him last week. Obviously, he’s coming off a major win. But I feel like he obviously can be beaten, and I’ve just got to keep the pedal down and make a lot of birdies because I know he’s going to as well.”

Scheffler and Griffin actually go way back. They played lots of junior golf together.

“I’ve known him for a long time,” Scheffler said. “He always had a lot of talent. Here’s how to watch it all on Sunday.

How to watch the Memorial on Sunday

Scheffler had made nothing but pars through 13 holes at Muirfield Village on Saturday, but he birdied four of his last five to shoot 68 and steal the third-round lead from Ben Griffin.

Griffin, last week’s winner at the Charles Schwab Challenge, held the 18- and 36-hole leads at the Memorial and shot an even-par 72 on Saturday. He’ll start the final round one stroke behind Scheffler.

Griffin started well on Saturday and made three straight birdies on Nos. 6-8, but that stretch was followed by four straight bogeys. He added birdies on 14 and 15 before a final bogey on 18 dropped him out of the co-lead with Scheffler.

Scheffler and Griffin will make up the final pairing on Sunday, going off at 2:05 p.m. ET. That duo also represents the last two winners on Tour — Griffin at the Charles Schwab and Scheffler at the PGA Championship.
