The star-studded team of Jennifer Kupcho and Akshay Bhatia got off to a blazing start in Friday’s opening-day scramble, finishing the day with a 13-under 59. But they weren’t the lowest of the low teams on Day 1.

That title belongs to Patty Tavatanakit and Jake Knapp, who bested Team Kupcho/Bhatia by one for a 58 and the first-round lead.

On Friday, the stars of the LPGA and PGA Tours will join forces for the unique Grant Thornton team event that debuted last year. Each of the 16 teams competing features one LPGA and one PGA Tour pro, who will compete together for a chance to split the $1 million winner’s prize.

For the second year in a row, Lexi Thompson and Rickie Fowler are teaming up. To capture the title, the star-studded duo will have to find a way to defeat another returning team, defending champions Lydia Ko and Jason Day.

The stars of the PGA and LPGA Tours are joining forces this week for the 2024 Grant Thornton Invitational mixed-team event. Here’s everything you need to know to watch the tournament, including full TV coverage, streaming info and complete tee times once they are released.

Grant Thornton Invitational preview

All the major tours have completed their seasons, with last week’s Hero World Challenge kicking off exhibition season for pro golfers. This week, and for just the second year, top players from both the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour are teaming up to compete in two-player mixed teams.

A star-studded list of 16 teams has gathered at Tiburon Golf Club to battle for the $4 million purse, with $1 million shared between the winners. Those teams include defending champions Lydia Ko and Jason Day; Nelly Korda and Tony Finau; and Lexi Thompson and Rickie Fowler. (UPDATE: Tony Finau withdrew from the tournament on Wednesday, and Daniel Berger will take his place as Korda’s teammate.)

Star-studded field of PGA, LPGA stars unveiled for Grant Thornton mixed-team event

The unique event consists of three rounds featuring different formats. Friday’s format will be a traditional scramble, where each player hits a shot, then chooses the best one and hits their next shots from that spot.

Saturday’s round will feature a traditional foursomes, or alternate shot, format, with teammates playing the same ball and alternating who hits each shot. One team member will tee off on even holes, with the other teammate taking odd holes.

Finally, Sunday’s final round format will be a modified fourball, where teammates switch balls after their tee shots and continue through the rest of the hole.

Golf Channel and NBC will provide TV coverage of the 2024 Grant Thornton Invitational, while Peacock, NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports App will offer streaming coverage online.

If you’ve been hurting for some PGA and LPGA Tour action as both tours wind down their 2024 seasons, then one week in December should make you feel a lot better.
 
From December 13-15, 32 top PGA Tour and LPGA Tour pros will tee it up in the second-annual Grant Thornton Invitational. The unique event, which began last year, features 16 mixed teams featuring one PGA and one LPGA player each.
 
It represents the only chance for golf fans to watch the best men and women golfers on the planet competing with and against each other for serious cash: a $4 million purse.

Massive PGA Tour changes might be better than you think — here's why

On Tuesday, tournament officials announced the final 12 teams who will take part in the event next month, and it includes some formidable duos. Rising LPGA star Rose Zhang will team up with Sahith Theegala, both members of the most recent U.S. Solheim and Presidents Cup teams, respectively.
 
Fellow French pros Matthieu Pavon and World No. 8 Céline Boutier, who both competed for their country at the Paris Olympics this summer, make up another heavy-hitting team.
 
World No. 2 Lilia Vu and fellow American Luke List are also featured among the 12 recently-announced pairings.
 
They’ll join four star-studded teams that had previously been revealed: defending champions Lydia Ko and Jason Day, World No. 1 Nelly Korda and Tony Finau, Lexi Thompson and Rickie Fowler, and Jeeno Thitikul and Tom Kim.

The event, which will be held at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Fla., for the second year in a row, features a unique format for tournament golf. Players will compete across three rounds from Friday-Sunday. The first round will be played as a scramble and the second round will be a traditional foursomes format.
 
The final round sports an especially interesting modified four-ball format, where each player hits a tee shot, then they switch balls for the rest of the hole, with the lowest score between then counting.
