Welcome to Fully Fit 2026, GOLF’s new platform for providing you with real-golfer insights into what 2026 gear might be best suited for your game. To this end, we assembled six GOLF content creators of varying abilities and ran them through the gauntlet of six full-bag fittings (driver to putter!) at six major club manufacturers in Phoenix and Carlsbad, Calif. During the course of Fully Fit, I walked away with a few drivers that I really liked. TaylorMade, Callaway, and Cobra all came out swingin’ hard and it was actually difficult to tell the difference between them all on the course.

I ended up picking the Callaway Quantum Triple Diamond because it was constantly faster than the rest of the bunch. Unfortunately, between swing changes, lack of play, and some lack of mental fortitude, everything started to fall apart. I wouldn’t have been able to hit the 18th fairway at St. Andrews’ Old Course, let alone a tight tree-lined fairway here at home, regardless of the driver.

I needed to rebuild.

In this case it means looking at all options again. I even went back to the TaylorMade and Cobra builds that I had also used successfully, including breaking par for my first time with the Qi4D. Nothing worked.

Thankfully, Titleist moved up their driver release this year, and my man Hunter over at TPI got me sorted out.

I walked in with zero confidence in my ability to hit the ball off the tee, and I walked out of that fitting wanting to play more golf. I started to play some really, really good golf, too.

My handicap at the end of last year jumped up to a 1 from +.3 and was trending even worse until the GTS3 got put in the bag. It’s now sitting back at +.3, and I feel like I am playing some of the most confident golf of my life. The GTS3 made me feel completely invincible off the tee. In the moment, and for several weeks afterwards, it was easily the best driver I hit this year.

So far with the rounds I have played with the fitted GTS3, I have shot par again, broken par again, hit a drive 343 yards (definitely didn’t bounce off a sprinkler), and won a member-guest tournament at Victoria National, a golf course that’s famous for fighting back, particularly off the tee.

So naturally, about a week ago, I decided to try out a new driver.

Turns out the greatest gift that Hunter actually gave me was my confidence back. I’ve now gone back to the TaylorMade and the Cobra with much success, and I’m currently in the Qi4D with a new prototype from Mitsubishi that I can’t talk about just yet, but it has an orange band on it.

As a Callaway driver player for the last decade, it’s a weird feeling to not have one in the bag now, but it just proves why getting fit is important, why on-course testing is king and even more not making something work knowing you aren’t at your best. Obviously I will always keep it close but in times like this I need to re-turn over every stone, just my process.

The truth is, there’s no end to this story quite yet. I really thought the GTS3 was it. But the success of the GTS3 sort of created its own rival monster in that it gave me all the confidence back that I needed to play better, and now other things are really good again. This Qi4D combination could be deadly. So rather than answering as to what has made the official bag, I’ll leave you with the plan I have to tackle the decision.

Arccos just released a new update to their app that allows you to compare different clubs’ performance. I am going on a golf trip this week, and I am going to be playing the same course a few times, so we’ve got a perfect storm.

The plan is to bring the GTS3 and the Qi4D builds with me, and alternate them every round for 4 rounds. After that, it’s straight to the Arccos stats, and I’m going to let Arccos tell me what to do. Right now, one of the drivers has a clear lead, but I haven’t hit the same number of shots with both clubs.

By the end of this, I only care about one thing: which one helps me score better. Arccos measures TONS of data, so there will be plenty to dive into.

Here’s what I know for sure. There are multiple great drivers out there for every golfer. This is the best driver market we’ve ever had, and I feel like it’s going to continue to stay that way for a while to come.

We won’t see a new Titleist or TaylorMade til 2028. Ping is set to release a new lineup in 2027, along with Callaway and Cobra, and even Mizuno and Wilson have come out swinging this year with options that I have played on course with plenty of success as well.

It’s the best time to be in the market for a new driver. The only mandatory action you have to take is to make sure that you get fit, and then back that fit up with on-course experience.

I tried 'zero-torque' putters for 6 months. Here's why I'm not using one now | Fully Fit 2026

The biggest surprise for me during our six-day club-fitting bonanza back in December was during a putter fitting at TaylorMade’s Kingdom.

No, I wasn’t knocked off my feet by how good the Spider Tour and Spider Tour X putters are — although they are tremendous putters.

Instead, my “Aha” moment came with the newer of TaylorMade’s Spider models, the Spider ZT, TaylorMade’s take on the low-torque, or “zero-torque,” putting phenomenon that has captivated the marketplace over the past two years.

Editor’s note: Given that even “zero-torque” putters still have torque to get them to balance toe-up, GOLF refers to these types of putters as “low-torque.”

During a putter fitting, I came with two “gamers.” A face-balanced blade and a low-torque mid-mallet that I had committed to using for several months to see what it would do to my putting stroke.

After a couple of strokes with a comparable TaylorMade blade, we jumped into the Spider ZT, where the result left me in a rare speechless moment.

On the first attempt, I recorded a face angle of 0.01 ° at impact on the GEARS system. That meant I returned the putter face nearly perfectly square. Good putters typically have up to a degree of face angle variance. A professional golfer typically records anywhere within a half degree. After a few more attempts, I kept getting within that half-degree threshold.

Am I the ideal candidate for low-torque putters? As I have found out, it’s not that simple.

My low-torque putting experiment

For some background, until I had this job as GOLF’s associate equipment editor, I had used either a Scotty Cameron Newport 2 or Newport 2.5+ with Teryllium inserts for 15 years. I never knew a mallet, and I liked a soft feel.

A putter fitting — realistically, my first ever — with Bettinardi last spring showed me that the short slant on my Newport 2.5+ had too much toe hang and I’d be better off using something more face-balanced. My stroke was more like a pendulum, with very little face rotation, rather than an arc like I thought it was.

I was using blades like that and seeing improvements, especially from short and mid-range, until Scotty Cameron released their Onset Center Fastback and Phantom 11R, the company’s first low-torque putters. Immediately, I was intrigued, especially by the Fastback OC, as it was a shape that I already knew I liked — a mid-mallet that was far off spaceship territory — had little shaft lean and had Scotty Cameron’s new and very soft Studio Carbon Steel insert.

In my first tests, I didn’t have a left miss, which to that point, I’d experienced with almost every low-torque putter I’d tried except the Spider ZT. I put some impact tape on the face just out of curiosity and saw my strike was dead center.

That was when I came up with this experiment, and my experience at the Kingdom only further proved to me that I was on the right track.

For the next few months, I planned to putt exclusively with low-torque putters as a means of resetting my putting stroke.

Until my putter fitting with Bettinardi, I felt like my putting was holding me back. I struggled big time with pulls, especially from short range and couldn’t convert enough 10-20 foot mid-range putts. I started putting better after the putter changes, but I figured, why not try to reset everything and potentially start fresh in 2026?

After TaylorMade, I wondered if the experiment would ever end. But by April, it was, and I had learned a ton.

My results with low-torque putters

The primary putters I used for the experiment were the Scotty Cameron Fastback OC and the Spider ZT, both at 35″ and standard lie angles of 70 degrees. I also dabbled with a L.A.B. Golf OZ.1i and had some good initial success, but the milled steel insert was too firm for me, and I struggled with pace.

The blade putters I used in 2025 were slightly longer at 35.5″ and flatter at 67 degrees, but with both putters, my stroke was consistent and my eyes were in similar positions in the stock length and lie.

Both putters I gripped with the Golf Pride Reverse Taper Pistol Medium, slightly larger than the small version I’d been using on all my other putters. I did this because, to be most effective with a low-torque putter, I needed to remove my hands from the stroke, and a bigger grip helps that.

At first, the results were good. I trended toward the Cameron a little more because of its more compact shape and the softer insert, which I felt helped with distance control.

The Spider ZT had plenty of advantages, though, thanks to its larger, high-MOI shape. With that putter, I knew I could make a bad stroke and still have it go in.

For the most part, my pulls on short putts, especially right-to-left breakers, were eliminated, but I didn’t realize at what cost for a few months.

Eventually, my left miss came back because I became fearful of a right miss. The thing with low-torque putters is that they resist the urge to twist either direction. I’ve putted for years with the feeling of the blade opening and then closing. Whether it matched my stroke or not, I needed to feel like the blade closes through the stroke.

This is when I got into a phase of battle golf on the green, either pushing the putt because I was actively trying to avoid feeling my natural release through the putt, or pulling it because I forced myself to close the blade, even though the putter was already square.

I had grown up on a feel and now that feel was dulled.

What I’m using now

Ironically, the putter I’m using now was presented to me during Fully Fit, and I passed because I didn’t understand what it was.

The Ping Scottsdale TEC Ally Blue Onset looks like a low-torque putter, but it’s actually something entirely different. For starters, the Ally Blue Onset has toe hang. It’s minimal, just five degrees, but the toe does not point up when balanced.

That’s because instead of aligning the Ally Blue Onset’s shaft through the center of gravity of the putter, Ping placed it in front of the CG, meaning the stroke pulls the CG, like a truck towing a trailer. The configuration does lower the putter’s torque profile, but it’s not far off from Ping’s Anser either.

The shaft is still back off the face, but it gives a completely unobstructed view of the face to aid alignment. The Scottsdale TEC EyeQ technology also has a number of alignment aids built in that GOLF’s Jake Morrow just dove deep into.

With that unique CG placement relative to shaft axis, what I got is a super stable putter that gave me just the right feeling of release through the ball. Finally, I had a putter that I could stroke freely and trust the ball would come off on my intended line.

The Scottsdale TEC insert is made of super-soft PEBAX material. It’s the first non-milled putter I’ve ever used, but the soft feel is very similar to what I’ve liked my whole life.

When at Ping’s PLD Putting Lab for my fitting last December, the fitter asked if I wanted to try the then-unreleased Ally Blue Onset. I thought it was another low-torque option and I wasn’t ready to commit to either a traditional-sized mallet or a putter without a milled insert. My tune changed after my Kingdom experience.

Would I like to go back to the PLD Lab and see if we could get this Ally Blue Onset further dialed in? It will probably happen at some point, but until then, I’m not worried that I’m leaving anything on the table.

What I learned

Let me be clear: If anyone asked to make an eight-foot, dead straight putt for a million dollars, I’d be comfortable using any one of these putters. In an indoor fitting environment where I know the target is a straight putt with no break, a low-torque putter is simply point-and-shoot.

But for a golfer like me, who has thousands upon thousands, maybe even millions(?) of reps of releasing the toe of a putter, breaking putts becomes challenging.

So I learned that an indoor putter fitting is great, but I need to validate that experience on the golf course and hit breaking putts.

The second thing is that using a low-torque putter did have a pretty significant impact on my stroke.

While I did fight the concept for a while, my stroke was refined through months of trying to reduce the manipulations of my hands. Now I can still feel the release of the putter while also keeping my hands quiet through the stroke.

The Ping is the best putter for me. But I find that whenever I pick up my old Scotty Cameron blades, I have a much easier time hitting the center than before.

During an interview for our Bag Spy series, Rickie Fowler told me much of the same experience.

“Going to the Jailbird, kind of that longer length, a lot heavier, helped kind of quiet and take the hands out of it a bit,” Fowler, who moved from a L.A.B. putter to a center-shafted Scotty Cameron GoLo this year, said. “And then from there went into messing with the L.A.B.s, still helping take the hands out of it a bit, but at a lighter, kind of shorter setup to help try and bring some feel back into it.”

Like Fowler, I also got over any aversion to center-shafted putters.

Not really a low-torque putter, but it still fits in the category if we define it by onset putters. This has been my gamer, somewhat surprisingly, in my first two competitive rounds of the year, and I’ve yet to have a competitive three-putt.

Despite the onset shaft, there’s no shaft lean, which makes this feel just like a traditional putter to me; I just place the ball a little more forward in my stance.

The insert also really surprised me for how responsive it is. The original Scottsdale line from 2025 had a similar PEBAX insert, which even I found was too soft. The Scottsdale TEC — probably because the rest of the putter is a milled aluminum and steel construction — feels much more like the soft milled putters I’ve used before.

I like the feel and look of this low-torque putter the best.

Unlike most low-torque designs, this isn’t a high-MOI shape, so it’s easier for someone who has played a blade to transition to it.

What did me in here was the heavier-designed weight, which didn’t totally mesh with my quicker stroke tempo. I also found that I was launching this putter with backspin, again potentially having something to do with the heavier headweight. This could potentially be solved with the adjustable weights, but I haven’t tried that yet.

For someone with a more deliberate pace who likes the soft feel, this could work out really well.

This is one of the most popular low-torque putters on the market for good reason.

Due to the Pure Roll insert’s great forward roll, I tried to give this putter as much of a chance as possible after the fitting. But it just didn’t translate to the course, and I found myself trying to steer it.

This is my favorite L.A.B. putter so far, but I just didn’t vibe with the super firm feel off the face, despite pairing it with the softer Accra shaft.

I also used a 0 ° shaft-lean option, which really helped me avoid a left start line.

I just received the Spider Tour during the run-up to the release of the 2026 line, and I’ve never had the chance to try out the small slant necks on the Spider before.

Turns out they work really well with my stroke, and I look forward to more testing. However, I’m not looking to change anything with my gamer at the moment.

If you’ve been following along via my IG, the Fully Equipped Podcast or any other Fully Fit content, you would know by now that the overall equipment market is so competitive that it’s almost impossible to make a bad decision.

In any category.

Every company not only has “their best” but that “best” goes all the way through the bag. YES, there are some parts where the volume isn’t cranked up to a ten (some hybrids, a few iron sets, etc.), but overall it’s probably the most competitive year in recent memory.

However, for me, there was one piece of equipment that was substantially better than the rest: the Callaway Chrome Tour X golf ball.

Of everything I tested, put in play, loved, touted and evangelized, this ball has gotten the most smoke. Why? It was the only piece of equipment that, when introduced at a fitting, improved my performance numbers in a unique way. That’s not just me, either; see for yourself in this video with Charles Howell III. The results were laughable.

I ran a test for myself off camera in most of my fittings, where at the end I would swap in the Chrome Tour X, and almost like Thanos snapping his fingers, the atmosphere would shift. Ball speed UP 2-4MPH, launch down 1-2 degrees, spin retention was better, dispersion tightened and gapping all of a sudden organized.

Look, I’m 49 years old, a 2-handicap, and in a line of work where I don’t get blown away very often. This ball was the first time (in a long time) that a piece of equipment eliminated any need for more testing on anything else. In fittings, if a driver was close numbers-wise, I’d pop in a CTX at the end, and the numbers went from good to “My God.”

This was just one recent example, and honestly, it was like this EVERYWHERE I went. What’s even cooler is I can now start to look at iron sets that may be on the less forgiving side because CTX actually raised my ceiling and my floor at the same time. That just doesn’t happen. Is it good off the range? On the course? Well, I’ve played six rounds of golf this year, both in tournaments (yes, that’s the truth). All rounds were in very windy conditions on hard, fast greens, and not once did I make a bogey or worse because of a lack of control in the wind: No floaters, no knuckle balls, nothing.

Some may think I’m biased because of my employment history… not the case. The moment I stepped away from Callaway in 2025, I went right into their No. 1 competitor’s ball and had a good summer with it. The moment I put the new CTX back in the mix, I literally went from a 49-year-old trying for dear life to keep my ball speed in the low to mid-160s to now thinking that 170 MPH is literally at my fingertips.

Give this a test. If you don’t, you’re not doing this right.

I arrived in Carlsbad ready for a week full of fittings, tearing apart my entire golf bag and offering me a new lease on equipment. Little did I know my favorite part of the entire week would come in the first few minutes.

Before I did any full-swing testing, my first hour was spent in TaylorMade’s putting studio, spending a full 60 minutes analyzing my stroke, my former gamer putter and working me through TaylorMade’s suite of flatsticks. I learned quickly just how much can be overlooked in the typical putter decision. People meander to Dick’s Sporting Goods and roll a couple of putts with different putters and make a choice on the spot. It’s all feel. TaylorMade — like all manufacturers — doesn’t want you doing that. But not everyone gets the full putter fitting treatment.

After rolling a few 10-footers with my former putter under super slo-motion cameras, it was clear that I often make a very smooth, neutral path at the ball, but have a tendency to leave the putter face open ever-so-slightly. On occasion, as much as 3° open, which, with a 7-iron, might not be a big deal. From eight feet and with the match on the line, 3° open might offer you a 10-percent make rate.

How I ended up in a TaylorMade Spider Tour X

I was gaming a wider version of a blade putter, mostly because I enjoy the look and feel of what that offers. But when it came down to performance with my stroke, the blade was finicky. On long putts, I had the tendency to hook putts at times — again, every so slightly — which would result in starting my strokes way left of target. For really long putts, that just means the ball is moving further and further from the target the longer the putt is.

But that’s where a fitter comes in. TaylorMade’s genius putting staff put a bunch of mallets in my hands that day, and the squareness and size of the putterhead closed down the face a sizeable amount in my stroke. Suddenly, my most “open” strokes were 1.5° open. The make rate on those misses is bound to increase. But the important point was that the majority of putts were now less than 1° open.

An added benefit of the larger head has, in recent weeks, shown itself more than it ever could in an indoor studio. Those 30- and 40-footers, where I would occasionally force the face closed (and putt some tiny draw spin on putts) — I was subconsciously lining up on the toe end of the putter head. That causes all sorts of lag-putt issues, leaving so many six-footers for par. No one wants that grind.

Thankfully, the larger head and weight of the mallet has made setting up to the ball very easy and allows me the feeling of my putter being a pendulum — the little white ball at the base of the stroke just gets in the way, and the putter does all the work. That kind of simplicity is something my short game has been looking for — and one my scores have no doubt appreciated early this season.

Going into Fully Fit, I thought I knew what kind of equipment was right for my game. Safe to say, I was very wrong, especially when it came to my irons.

A little backstory: Two years ago, I started on a journey to become a true scratch golfer. I got lessons and completely retooled my swing. Before that, I played a cut and hit down on the ball, which created a lot of early extension and left my hand-eye coordination to dictate ball striking — “sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe s—.” At the time, I was a 5-handicap. I needed help.

Then came the pivot.

The lesson plan shifted my swing to be much less prone to early extension and more geared toward hitting up on the ball rather than down. It sounded simple enough in theory, but the real-world impact was anything but.

This new approach created a massive issue from 8-iron down. I started noticing a gnarly split in north-south dispersion. The ball wasn’t going where I wanted, and I had lost all the trust I previously had in my irons and wedges. For what it’s worth, I’m a high-launch, high-spin player by nature, and that combination was no bueno.

Enter the moment of truth: a fitting session at The Kingdom with Matt Simone.

Matt is the kind of fitter who makes you believe in the process again, not just the end result. We started tinkering with lofts, chasing a theoretical fix that would help me cover the ball more consistently and keep it from running up the face. The idea was simple on paper: stronger lofts should tame launch and spin just enough to bring my numbers closer to target.

What happened next felt like a revelation.

The adjustments started to take hold in a way that surprised me. I had a feeling I hadn’t experienced in a while: I trusted my irons to do their job. The result was a real, tangible improvement in how I could control distance and direction, and, crucially, trust the club to do what I asked without fighting my swing. It wasn’t magic, but it changed my relationship with the game in a meaningful way.

In just three months, I’ve moved from a 2-handicap to a 1. The swing feels less like a constant battle and more like a collaboration with the gear I’m using. The confidence I’ve gained isn’t about chasing a perfect number; it’s about knowing I can pull any iron, hit my number, get it close, and walk away from a round without giving away three or four shots to avoidable mistakes.

Scratch is still on the horizon, but I’m closer than I’ve ever been. And I credit a lot of that progress to being deliberate about my equipment and trusting the process.

I’ve never been one to chase gains through endless equipment tweaks or obsess over specs. My instinct has always leaned on a familiar expression you’ve probably heard on the range or during a friendly match: a poor craftsman blames his tools.

More often than not, that philosophy worked for me — until one day, it didn’t.

I’ve always understood the importance of getting fit and playing equipment tailored to your game, yet I still assumed most of my shortcomings were purely skill-based—a gap I could close with enough reps.

That belief shifted during a wedge fitting at the Titleist Performance Institute. It wasn’t one club in particular that stood out to me. Rather, I was surprised by how much I’d been leaving on the table by relying on “off-the-rack” wedges. I’d been fit before for basics — shaft, length, loft, lie — but I hadn’t experienced a true wedge fitting. For me, the difference was significant.

After testing the full range of grinds in the SM11, I settled on an F-Grind for my 52-degree, a D-Grind for my 56, and an S-Grind for my 60. For context, I had previously played more standard, one-size-fits-all wedge grinds that weren’t truly matched to how I use each club around the green. With this change, the improvement was immediate — especially with spin and distance control, which had been a challenge for me.

Wedge breakdown

The first piece of my wedge setup felt comfortably familiar. My 52-degree — used primarily for full swings rather than touch shots — stayed in an F-grind, maintaining a sense of continuity. It’s one of the most predictable clubs in my bag, producing a consistent flight and dependable yardages without much need for manipulation. If anything, that reliability has become more noticeable. Time and again, it’s the club I lean on for short approach shots because it just does what I expect it to do.

Where things really started to shift was with the 56-degree D-grind, which brought a clear step forward in both versatility and forgiveness. The added bounce and sole relief made an immediate difference on softer lies and in the sand — especially compared to my previous, more standard grind setup. Just as important, I saw a noticeable increase in spin. Shots that once released unpredictably were now checking with intent, stopping quicker and doing so with more consistency, even from less-than-ideal lies.

Then came the 60-degree (S-grind), and with it, my short game really opened up. It’s quickly become the most versatile wedge in my bag. Designed for players who like to create shots from a variety of lies and conditions, the S-grind gave me the freedom to be more imaginative around the greens without sacrificing stability. Like my 56-degree, it also produced noticeably more spin, bringing a new level of predictability to both landing spots and rollout. I’m no longer choosing between creativity and control—now, the two work together. With this club in hand, I feel confident over every greenside shot, even under pressure.

What stood out most after putting these into play wasn’t just how each wedge performed on its own, but how naturally they began to work together. I still have a go-to club around the green, but now there’s a clear structure to the set.

With that structure came clarity. There’s less hesitation or second-guessing around the greens now—just a clear picture of the shot I want to hit. What I once saw as a purely skill-driven part of the game now feels like a blend of skill and setup, where the right tools don’t replace practice, but allow it to show up more reliably when it matters.

In the end, it’s not about chasing equipment for the sake of it. It’s about recognizing when the setup is starting to limit you and being willing to adjust.

My golf bag is ever-changing. Week to week, I’ll have different clubs; hell, there was a stretch where I played a different set every day, even playing a set once that had a different brand for all 14 slots in the bag. There is, however, one single club that you won’t see leave my true gamer bag; my Ping hybrid.

Currently, the G440 4-hybrid has dominated its place in the bag, and the 5-hybrid still wants to join the party, but I’ve had a Ping hybrid in the bag dating all the way back to the G410. Replaced by a G425, G430, and now the G440 series.

It just does what I need it to do

The biggest reason why the Ping hybrid is so important to my bag is the consistency that it delivers. Sure, they’ve gotten faster over the years, definitely easier to launch, too, but they’ve always been extremely consistent. Spin values across the face stay very true, and some of that is due to the more shallow profile that a Ping hybrid provides, which is also a great visual for me behind the golf ball.

My hybrids are all built to do one job: go up, and go left. All I want is a big high-tower draw that lands softly on the green. In the current bag, that’s at about 220 yards, but I can also float it down to 210 or absolutely rip one to about 230 when I need to.

Another advantage of the new G440, and one of the reasons that I upgraded, was that they’ve now gone with a progressive face angle. Using Arccos player data, they realized that a player using a 7-hybrid isn’t the same player using a 2-hybrid.

They took that knowledge and transformed the lineup so the 2-hybrid has more right-bias in it, and the higher lofted hybrids are meant to help turn the ball over. The 4-hybrid falls right in the middle. Where my G430 and previous 4-hybrids were a little bit shut, the G440 4-hybrid is very square, which is a helpful visual to see behind the ball. I play my hybrids in the standard loft, flat setting to help start the ball a bit right and let it draw back.

Another huge benefit for me with the hybrid, particularly in this distance category, is the ability to hit it from anywhere. You can tell when you look at the face of my hybrid that it’s been well-loved, but lots of those marks are from me using the hybrid out of fairway bunkers, in the trees, off of some concrete-like conditions, and even a couple of balls in some bushes.

There is nothing I am afraid of going after if I have the chance to bring out the hybrid. The club definitely comes away with some war wounds, but I’m a big believer in the tools-not-jewels strategy on course.

The Final Build

Thanks to Adam Harding of the Ping truck, my hybrid also gets a little bit of tour-sauce credit with a custom blacked-out face. That’s something the internet made controversial when I posted about it, but they didn’t understand the rules.

To me, it makes an incredible difference. Blacking out the score lines hides the loft on the face. That’s actually counterintuitive to how I like to set up the rest of my bag, but with the hybrids, it just works. It worked even better on the 5-hybrid we built, and in that case, it helps to make the face not look so closed.

I match my G440 4-hybrid up with a Fujikura Ventus HB Red Velocore + 9X. I’ve now installed this exact shaft in about 8 different clubs, and I absolutely love what it offers. Since the very first swing I took with it, there was something special about the shaft.

It’s a slightly differnet profile than it’s wood shaft counter-part so to me it feels a little bit softer in the hands while remaining stiff enough to really attack the transition in my swing, and it provides a stiffer tip section than you would think with a softer mid that allows for assistance in launch, but also remains stable enough to be able to flight the ball down or get a bit more steep on the ball too. It’s a wonderful pairing for a hybrid for players like myself who really need the hybrid to work different flights and create some more scoring ability.

If I was shocked by one thing during my Fully Fit 2026 journey, it’s how easy this muscle back 5-iron could be to hit.

Long irons and I have always had a love-hate relationship.

I’ve hit some incredible shots with them. You know the ones that launch high off the face and rocket into the air directly on line before gently rolling over to the left as they fall back to earth, landing gracefully on the green and releasing toward the pin? Bliss.

But even when I play some of my best golf, long-iron shots can still give me the most trouble. Despite finishing runner-up in my club championship this past summer, the multiple 200-plus-yard par-3s at my club often left me feeling like I couldn’t get a shot airborne. Thank god for match play — but still, I bowed out of the final match after pulling a 5-iron 25 yards left on one of those par-3s.

And that was with an iron set that included a larger and more forgiving 5-iron.

Fast forward to the start of 2026 and now I have a 5-iron — a Cobra 3DP MB — I can stand over and be truly confident that I’ll hit it flush, exactly how I want to. The surprising twist? It looks nothing like the 5-iron I thought would be my solution.

How I ended up in an MB 5-iron

Heading to Cobra’s fitting day for Fully Fit 2026, I had expected to find a set of the new 3DP MB and Tour irons that would be best for my game.

I just didn’t think the long irons would wow me so much.

At first, the new muscle back intimidated me. I’ve never played blades seriously before. Surely I was going to skull or, worse yet, present the hosel, with these compact irons. But I was shocked by how easy they were to hit. That’s owed to the unique 3D-printed construction of the 3DP MB, which you can read more about here.

I compare the feeling to hitting a mini driver off the deck for the first time. It seemed like I was about to drive the ball into the ground, but the soles on modern mini drivers make them almost as easy as a 3-wood to hit from the deck.

Working with Cobra fitter Andrew Lusty, we started with the 7-iron, as most iron fittings do, and it didn’t take us long to see how effortlessly I could hit the new 3DP MB while getting similar numbers to my gamer. We also dialed in a shaft change and a flatter lie angle that has virtually eliminated the left side of the golf course for me.

Still, as small as the 3DP MBs look to me, I couldn’t wrap my head around playing the line’s long irons.

That’s when Andrew offered me stock 4- and 5-irons to hit to see if I could hit the intended ball speeds. These were softer and shorter shafts than what I’m spec’d for, but the idea is if you can hit designated ball speeds and peak height windows with stock setups, you should easily be able to with the proper specs.

I was shocked when it took me just one swing to flush the stock MB 5-iron: 141 mph, 110 feet in the air. Exactly the numbers we were looking for.

We broke the set with the 4-iron because I was only able to muster around 141-143 mph out of the MB 4-iron, short of the required 5 mph ball-speed gap. Past the 5-iron was clearly my point of diminishing returns. Switching to the 3DP Tour 4-iron, the feeling of effortlessness returned.

While I had hoped to have played more golf by this point in the year, I’ve hit enough shots to know how much of a game-changer this 5-iron is.

During indoor testing, I hit 8 shots with the 5-iron and recorded a 3.7-yard carry standard deviation with an average carry of 204.5 yards. That basically means my 5-iron is like a pitching wedge, but from 205 yards.

Knowing that is confidence-inspiring, but the ease with which I can still work the ball up, down, left or right has really proved the club’s worth.

My goal with long irons is to make sure I’m just not losing strokes, but with this MB 5-iron, I feel like I finally have a weapon with which I can attack greens from 200 yards.

Welcome to Fully Fit 2026, GOLF’s new platform for providing you with real-golfer insights into what 2026 gear might be best suited for your game. To this end, we assembled six GOLF content creators of varying abilities and ran them through the gauntlet of six full-bag fittings (driver to putter!) at six major club manufacturers in Phoenix and Carlsbad, Calif. Of all the decisions our Fully Fit panelists had to make to start off their 2026 dream bags, the putter was easily the most personal.

Perhaps that’s why both Wadeh Maroun and I ended up committing to putters that we had brought with us on the trip, although that doesn’t mean we didn’t take any new contenders during our week of fittings.

While other categories during our project were more split, the bottom of the bags was dominated by two brands. While Vokey wedges took home the wedge spot for four of our testers, TaylorMade Spider putters found a spot in half of our setups.

Why it’s in my bag: This was honestly not a putter I ever thought would end up in my bag full-time. I came into this trip with two putters. A Scotty Cameron Studio Style Catalina, a face-balanced blade, and this Fastback OC. I thought I was doing an experiment to see what it would be like to try low-torque for the winter months and then switch back to see if it could improve my putting. But two experiences during Fully Fit really sold me that low torque might be a long-term decision for me. The first was at TaylorMade when I scored a 0.1˚ face angle score with the Spider ZT. This wasn’t a fluke either. I was constantly returning the face square every time. It was eye-opening because I didn’t feel like I was doing anything different.

The second was back at TPI, where, when running through the Scotty Cameron matrix, there was no putter I rolled better than the Fastback OC I came with. Every putt was end-over-end, the 360˚ line the Scotty Cameron fitters were using on the golf balls locked in place.

It’s no surprise the Fastback and the Spider ZT were the two low-torque options I liked the most as they both have a soft feel, minimal shaft lean and minimal onset. I love the super soft feel of the new SCS Chain-link inserts and, given I’ve already had a few months of playing with the Fastback, it’s going to be in the bag for now. But the Spider ZT Black I got has a good chance of giving me a serious putter controversy later on.

Why it’s in my bag: This was the toughest switch, and I can’t say that it’s going to be a permanent one, but if there’s a mallet I am going to play this year, it’s going to be this one. I went into the trip and told each fitter that I was only interested in finding a mallet, which is not something that has been accomplished in my game up until this point.

I actually walked into the TaylorMade Kingdom on our fitting day asking for a Spider Tour Black with no sight lines or alignment aids. The original plan was to recreate Tommy Fleetwood’s putter. The problem was that no matter how hard I tried, the Tour X just performed better for me than the Tour did. So we went with the performance and stuck with the Tour X.

I was able to use their My Spider Tour X platform to build this beauty. I have the firmer face insert, a black head with zero alignment features — including an unpainted Tru Path — with a BGT Stability One graphite putter shaft and a SuperStroke 1.0P Claw. I may be swapping this out soon for one of those new TPT Pulse shafts, but more on that soon. For right now, this is in the bag, and I’m going to dedicate some time to it. It’ll probably even make the trip with me to Battle at the Beach, but we’ll have to see if it makes it in play or if it gets benched at game time.

Why it’s in the bag: I judge all putters by two things: aim and contact. That’s it. My putter debate was between two options. A one-off Scotty Cameron that may still find its way in, but the Spider Tour X was apples to apples with the Scotty across the board — but with a softer pure roll insert. The soft face enabled me to dial in my speed a bit. I played an Odyssey Jailbird with MicroHinge for about 2+ years, so a soft face is preferred. I play a heavy putter, 650g total, as I want the putter to feel draggy or heavy down the line, which enables me to use my shoulders more. When I can’t feel a heavy head, my hands take over and chaos ensues.

Why it’s in my bag: Thanks to an hour-long fitting exclusively spent on the putter, I learned just how natural it is for me to leave the face slightly open, just a hair of a degree. That’s my stroke, though! I needed a putter with a lot more face stability and something with plenty of squareness to it. As discussed above, my eyes, hands and instincts work best with perpendicular lines. It feels comfortable looking down at something with sharper edges.

Wedges are the precision scoring tools of a golfer’s bag and there’s a ton of nuance that goes into finding the right setup. Wedge fitting is often a supremely overlooked process for building out your golf bag, but our panelists spared no time in dialing in the optimal loft and grind combinations for our games.

Perhaps no other category across all of Fully Fit was dominated like wedges were by Titleist’s Vokey SM11 wedges, with four of our panelists selecting Vokey’s latest line for our 2026 bags.

Interestingly, between our four lob wedges, only two of the six grinds selected were M and S, but each grind had both a 60 and 58-degree lobber represented.

Why they’re in my bag: The new Vokey SM11 switch from my previous set of SM10s was the easiest test I have made over this whole project. What really makes the transition so easy is the process and lengths Vokey fittings go through. I got to work with TPI’s Louis Raynard, who put me through the blind grind test. We hit shots with each of the six options, listening for strike, watching the launch window and then the spin on the green. Neither he nor I knew which one we were hitting at the time.

By the end, we revealed the M-Grind as my favorite, which was surprising as I’d previously played the higher bounce D- or V-Grinds. But the more I think about it, the more I realize the work I’ve done to shallow my attack angle, and the M-Grind was producing much more spin.

I stuck with the 54.14F sand wedge bent to 55˚ to contrast that mid-bounce lob wedge. I’m also sticking with the 46˚ specialty pitching wedge because of the higher bounce on the sole and getting the Vokey grooves out of the rough. Another big change I made with this set was switching from my wedge shafts (previously the DG S400) to my iron shafts, which brought more control with clubs, that are full-swing clubs, even if I don’t always hit them “full.” The other thing was switching from the DG S400 to the Project X wedge shaft. Even though I’m leaving the standard Project X shafts in my irons, the wedge part gives me the ability to flight the ball down without trying to force it, something I’ve always struggled with.

Why they’re in my bag: I had the very fortunate opportunity to work with both Jose Miraflor and Cobra tour rep Ben Schomin on this set of wedges. With the 50º and the 56º, we took off just a little bit of the toe and the heel, and we also gave the leading edge a bit more of a blunt shape, and slightly squared off. My primary use for the 56º is on full shots, or out of the bunker, so something with a bit more of a ski effect on the leading edge was really helpful. The W-grind is quite lovely on the 56, as it’s a lower bounce option that’s easy to play on approach shots, but it’s a wide sole that works really well in wet conditions or out of the bunkers. The 60º has been through a couple of iterations and the latest one, courtesy of Ben and a night spent on the Cobra tour truck, is actually inspired by a Rickie Fowler custom grind I found lying on the truck one night. Lots of heel relief, and a little bit taken off the back of the wedge to make it come out of the turf a bit cleaner. The Cobra King wedges are highly underrated, but they’re really, really good. The spin just as well as anything else, and I really appreciate the shape of the wedges as well as the CG locations. They just seem to come out of a perfect window for my game. Yes, I am a bit biased. It helps when you’ve gotten a little extra attention and some custom grinds.

Why they’re in my bag: When PGA Tour fitter Aaron Dill dials you in, there is kind of nowhere else to go. As a player who always wants to hit his wedges down, the SM11 brought down my launch by about two to three degrees with a ton of spin. Why they’re in my bag: I selected the Vokey SM11 wedges because the combination of grinds gives me the versatility I want around the greens. The 52° features an F-grind that’s great on full-swing shots. The fuller sole inspires confidence and resists digging. For my 56°, we went with a D-grind. It gives me a blend of forgiveness and versatility, so I can open the face without fear of the leading edge digging. And the 60° S-grind has a slightly narrower sole that feels reliable when I need to control my trajectory and spin on delicate shots.

Why they’re in my bag: I think they’re in the bag because of the blind wedge test my fitter put me through. He laid all different types of grinds on the turf and wouldn’t let me look at the grind before playing various short game shots. We played to short-sided pins, bump-and-run pins, hop-and-stop pins, and even a few shots from bunkers. The whole point became obvious: some grinds work for me and how my short game mind wants to attack various shots. My short-game instincts, if you will.
