Cobra’s new DS-ADAPT line of metal woods provides seemingly boundless loft and lie adjustability thanks to its groundbreaking FutureFit33 hosel and SmartPad technology. Never has driver offered 33 settings of loft and lie adjustments in one club.

But the hosel could actually be most useful in fairway woods and hybrids, said Jose Miraflor, Cobra’s VP of architecture.

On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, Miraflor told co-hosts Kris McCormack and Wadeh Maroun that FF33 will particularly shine in fairway woods because those are usually the most challenging clubs for which to fit golfers.

“And once you find a fairway wood, you typically have that for a longer purchase cycle than any other club because it’s the lowest lofted club you’re hitting off the deck, right?” Miraflor said. “So in fairway woods, I think one of the inherent things that’s a problem is a lot of people need flatter lie angles. And it’ll tilt that spin axis just a little bit to the right.

“And now you can really start to see what a neutral axis is on a fairway wood.”

Miraflor said that at a previous company he worked for, the Tour department was constantly bending fairway woods flatter to accommodate pros who wanted to start the ball right.

With FutureFit33 on the DS-ADAPT line, fitters and players now have the ability to change lie up or down two degrees independently of the loft setting and face angle. With previous adjustable hosels, most adjustments could make clubs only more upright or slightly flatter than the standard setting.

“So now you don’t have to do that, and you can get two degrees flatter out of it,” Miraflor said. “I think it’s really going to help a lot of people with their fairway-wood game.”

Miraflor added that it also will be advantageous for hybrids to be made flatter because better players often struggle with a left miss with hybrids, too.

And for those thinking 33 hosel settings might be intimidating, Miraflor explained that using the FF33 loft sleeve isn’t actually that complicated once you figure out your miss and reference the included chart.

“Once you find out what quadrant you’re missing in, you go with the opposite quadrant,” he said of the chart. “And now if you just pick two or three out of there, direct opposite to bring you back to A1, you’re only going to need to try maybe two to three, maybe four settings at the most.”
