Welcome to Fully Equipped’s weekly Tour equipment report. Every Friday of PGA Tour weeks (plus other times, if news warrants), GOLF equipment editor Jack Hirsh runs you through some of the biggest news surrounding golf clubs on Tour, including changes, tweaks and launches.

Augusta National presents a unique challenge to the best in the world every year, but with near-perfect conditions, the test is even more demanding.

With a fairly dry lead-up to the Masters and the rare occurrence of no rain in the forecast for this weekend, Augusta National will be as firm and fast this weekend as the club wants it, meaning pros are searching for more height to stop the ball.

That’s why it shouldn’t come as a surprise that 11 players chose to drop 4-irons this week in favor of high-lofted fairway woods or hybrids. A few of those players are guys who don’t typically play a 4-iron, like Tommy Fleetwood, Zach Johnson and PGA Tour Champions players Vijay Singh, Mike Weir and Freddie Couples, who has his normal three-hybrid setup this week.

But other players, including Akshay Bhatia, Brian Campbell, Jason Day and Matt Fitzpatrick, have all dropped the 4-iron for clubs they’ve had built specifically for Augusta National.

Bhatia added a new Callaway Apex UW ’26 21-degree this week in place of his normal 22-degree X Forged UT 4-iron.

“Basically, he was looking at incoming second shots to Nos. 13 and 15 and needing something hitting a higher apex to land softer on those greens,” Callaway Tour Content Manager Johnny Thompson told GOLF.

Bhatia’s gamer OG prototype UW, which is closer to 17 degrees in loft, remains in the bag as his 5-wood alternative. Despite the roughly three-degree gap between the two clubs, the new UW is more than two inches shorter, which provides an optimal carry yardage gap.

Campbell, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour last season, like Bhatia, also does not play a traditional 4-iron week-to-week, opting instead for Ping’s iDi long iron replacement. But this week, he’s got a G440 Max 9-wood to help him get even more stopping power on the firm greens.

“When he hits it on No. 4 or into 5, that 9-wood is just going to allow it to stop so much faster than even that [iDi]4-iron,” Ping Tour Rep Kenton Oates told GOLF. “The 4-iron gets in there fine, but it still spins like a 4-iron — it’s just not going to react the same.”

Oates said the spin is the real difference maker when it comes to switching from an iron to a fairway wood or hybrid. He could build a 4-iron that nearly reaches the same height a high-lofted metal wood, but it’s the extra spin that really gives a player control on the greens.

“It’s probably not a huge difference on a TrackMan peak height number — maybe only about 15 feet — but that extra height is coming from spin. When the height is coming from spin, that’s when you really start to see the ball actually react on the green and stop. That’s the difference,” Oates said. “That extra 15 feet can end up being 15 feet closer to the hole when it lands.”

Ping had three 9-woods in play this week, 10+ 7-woods and Carlos Ortiz gamed a 26-degree G440 5-hybrid.

Shane Lowry, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Jason Day all used TaylorMade 7-woods, but the interesting note there was that Fitzpatrick and Day both kept the 5-woods they already had in the bag, bucking the trend of either having a 5- or a 7-wood. Lowry dropped his Srixon ZXiU 3-iron for the Qi4D 7-wood.

“Sometimes I feel like you need it, especially with the added length,” Day said on Wednesday of the extra fairway wood. “You kind of need a better gap at the top end for some of these holes around Augusta National. So nothing too dramatic, but just the top end.”

TaylorMade’s Adrian Rietveld told GOLF that both Day and Fitzpatrick have shorter builds on their 7-woods, but otherwise, there’s nothing different about the spec for it to cover both a 3-iron and 4-iron distance. Rietveld said both players are using shot-shaping to hit higher, more floaty shots when they need to cover 4-iron yardage.

Basically, the 7-wood acts as two clubs in one.

Mini Mania at Augusta National

Mini driver usage has been growing steadily on the PGA Tour over the past two years, but it seems like it might be peaking at the Masters.

A total of 23 players played a mini driver at Augusta National and it seems the consensus is that the clubs are built for the modern game at the historic course. Callaway lead the way with 10 while TaylorMade had eight.

While several of those mini drivers were from players like Fleetwood, Max Greyserman and Min Woo Lee who game one every week on the PGA Tour, other players like Justin Rose, Harris English and Tom McKibbin had them built in the weeks prior specifically for this course.

“I think it’s all about predictability when it comes to a mini driver,” Callaway Tour Representative Kellen Watson told GOLF. “You have a driver where you know it’s going to carry this bunker, but you don’t know how much it’s going to roll out. With this, you want to know the carry number and have the total be very tight — like nine yards or so — which is perfect.”

Even as the Masters tees have been lengthened over 500 yards in the last 20 years, the bends in the fairways — and the firmness of those fairways — make several holes ideal for players to use a mini driver.

The most obvious case is the long downhill dogleg left par-4 10th, where a drive down the left benefits from the steeper slope. But because a mini driver is easier to work right-to-left, it’s also favored on Nos. 5, 7, which have awkward run-outs and slants in the fairways.

For many longer players, there’s also only one hole where a 3-wood off the deck comes into play: The uphill par-5 8th. But No. 8 allows players to hit a low approach and chase it up, a shot well-suited to a mini driver.

“If you’re a longer player, there are basically no 3-woods off the ground here,” said Oates. “So now the mini driver fills that gap, especially when you combine that with the number of tee shots where you have to work it right-to-left. That combination makes it really valuable.”

Oates said English, who primarily plays a fade with his driver, was hitting his mini driver on 6-7 different holes during practice rounds.

Max Homa also tested out a Cobra King Tec mini that Ben Schomin said was to give him an option off the tee to move the ball right to left.

“The idea was to be able to make a stock swing and have the ball turn over without having to do anything differently with setup or alignment,” Schomin said. “But also have the ability to really swing it around when you need to, like on 10. He felt very comfortable doing both.”

Schomin and Homa had the club dialed for an 8˚-10˚ launch and 2800-3100 spin, but Homa ultimately decided on a 3-wood instead.

Quiet week on the trucks

One common theme with all of these new clubs players have in their bags this week is that the vast majority weren’t built this week.

In fact, Masters week, like most major weeks, is a fairly quiet one on the Tour Trucks.

“There’s really not much going on. I mean, there’s really not much we can do,” Watson said. “At this point, if you haven’t done your job already, then you probably shouldn’t be here.”

Much of the work is validating or re-validating clubs that were built for this week, or minor maintenance jobs like re-grippings and loft and lie checks.

Justin Rose is a perfect example as he had clubs, like his Callaway Quantum Mini Driver and prototype Cleveland RTZ wedge, built for him weeks ago specifically to get ready for the Masters.

The Ping Tour Truck built 109 clubs this week, but the majority of those were players like Vijay Singh, who doesn’t get serviced regularly, or guys like Sandy Lyle, who aren’t even playing this week.

“A lot of the stuff you’re seeing built this week is for past champions or guys we don’t see as much,” Oates said. “The Conners and the Hovlands, they’re already dialed. There’s really not much for us to do.”

Harry Hall goes nuclear on the bag after Round 1

Harry Hall started his Masters with a brand new driver, a Ping G440 LST, one that helped Ping tie Titleist for the lead in driver count for the week, a first in roughly two seasons for Ping.

He also had Ping’s prototype mini in the bag as he continues his torrid pace of gear switches throughout this season.

Already this year, Hall has switched between no fewer than four different drivers, two sets of irons, three sets of wedges, two putters and a golf ball change just for this week.

After Round 1 at Augusta, where he shot 77, he seemed ready to do all of that between then and his Friday morning tee time.

“I’m going to change my driver. I’m going to put two drivers in play tomorrow, different ones. I’m putting a new putter in play and going to figure out on the range,” Hall said Thursday. “I don’t think I spin my irons enough either. I went into a spinnier ball this week, but I still, you know, can’t stop it on a dime like I need to. So I probably need to add off to my irons or do something to compete in these majors.”

Hall appeared to only use the TaylorMade Qi4D driver he was playing most recently before this week and he did switch from his longtime Odyssey O-Works putter to a TaylorMade Spider that he started using at Bay Hill.

After all of that, Hall had a wild Round 2 of five birdies, five bogeys and eight pars for an even-par 72 that puts him at five over for the week and likely to miss the cut.

Golf Pride continues major dominance

No surprise here as Golf Pride continues to dominate grip counts at majors.

Of the top 10 betting favorites heading into the week, eight of them used Golf Pride grips with multiple models represented, including the Tour Velvet, MCC and Align Max families.

Overall, 80 of the 91 players in the field are using a Golf Pride grip.

Justin Thomas (GTS2), was among three players to add a new Titleist GTS driver this week. With Gary Woodland winning in Houston using a prototype Cobra OPTM Max-K driver, the days of LS heads dominating the PGA Tour are surely over.

Just a few years ago, it would have been unthinkable for a fast player like Woodland, who leads the PGA Tour in clubhead speed this season, to consider anything other than a compact low-spin style driver.

But thanks to modern technology, more and more players are opting for more forgiveness-minded drivers, while still getting plenty of speed.

On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, co-hosts Johnny Wunder and Jake Morrow debated the death of the “LS” driver.

Woodland said earlier this year that he opted for the OPTM Max LS-K, a prototype version of Cobra’s high-MOI Max-K driver that would still be considered a more forgiving head with a deep and low CG, because he realized he drives it best when the weight is deep.

Wunder realized that when he was at Callaway, Jon Rahm and Xander Schauffele also drove it well with the weight in their drivers more neutral instead of forward, the characteristic of LS drivers.

“None of those guys were frontloaded weights and they all drove it well when they played,” Wunder said. “The only time that they had a ton of weight up front is if they played with a lot of loft. So what I’m seeing is that these core heads, for example, if we’re going to talk about Callaway, the reason why the TD Max works so well, is that you can make it super low spin or you can make it super fast and super forgiving. [TaylorMade] Qi4D is like that. That’s why you’re seeing so many Ping players go from 440 LST into 440K. Because you can go down in loft.”

Because adjustability has come so far in modern drivers, companies are able to take more forgiving shapes and make them low spin by neutralizing the CG and lowering the loft. The only issue there is struggling to see the loft, which can be fixed with minor optical tricks like drawing lines on the face or brighter faces.

Morrow pointed out that the line between a company’s core model driver and the LS driver has blurred over the years, thanks to that adjustability. But that also means LS heads have gained forgiveness, which makes them great tools for players who fight a slice.

“I have put a lot of slicey people into a low lofted LS head that’s lofted up because it closes the face and it eliminates a lot of spin,” Morrow said. “They’re like, ‘Well, I’m supposed to be playing this because this is for the fast guy.’ Well, no, no, no. It’s just a spin thing.”

So is the LS driver ready to die? Probably not, but the use cases for them are definitely changing.

If I was shocked by one thing during my Fully Fit 2026 journey, it’s how easy this muscle back 5-iron could be to hit.

Long irons and I have always had a love-hate relationship.

I’ve hit some incredible shots with them. You know the ones that launch high off the face and rocket into the air directly on line before gently rolling over to the left as they fall back to earth, landing gracefully on the green and releasing toward the pin? Bliss.

But even when I play some of my best golf, long-iron shots can still give me the most trouble. Despite finishing runner-up in my club championship this past summer, the multiple 200-plus-yard par-3s at my club often left me feeling like I couldn’t get a shot airborne. Thank god for match play — but still, I bowed out of the final match after pulling a 5-iron 25 yards left on one of those par-3s.

And that was with an iron set that included a larger and more forgiving 5-iron.

Fast forward to the start of 2026 and now I have a 5-iron — a Cobra 3DP MB — I can stand over and be truly confident that I’ll hit it flush, exactly how I want to. The surprising twist? It looks nothing like the 5-iron I thought would be my solution.

How I ended up in an MB 5-iron

Heading to Cobra’s fitting day for Fully Fit 2026, I had expected to find a set of the new 3DP MB and Tour irons that would be best for my game.

I just didn’t think the long irons would wow me so much.

At first, the new muscle back intimidated me. I’ve never played blades seriously before. Surely I was going to skull or, worse yet, present the hosel, with these compact irons. But I was shocked by how easy they were to hit. That’s owed to the unique 3D-printed construction of the 3DP MB, which you can read more about here.

I compare the feeling to hitting a mini driver off the deck for the first time. It seemed like I was about to drive the ball into the ground, but the soles on modern mini drivers make them almost as easy as a 3-wood to hit from the deck.

Working with Cobra fitter Andrew Lusty, we started with the 7-iron, as most iron fittings do, and it didn’t take us long to see how effortlessly I could hit the new 3DP MB while getting similar numbers to my gamer. We also dialed in a shaft change and a flatter lie angle that has virtually eliminated the left side of the golf course for me.

Still, as small as the 3DP MBs look to me, I couldn’t wrap my head around playing the line’s long irons.

That’s when Andrew offered me stock 4- and 5-irons to hit to see if I could hit the intended ball speeds. These were softer and shorter shafts than what I’m spec’d for, but the idea is if you can hit designated ball speeds and peak height windows with stock setups, you should easily be able to with the proper specs.

I was shocked when it took me just one swing to flush the stock MB 5-iron: 141 mph, 110 feet in the air. Exactly the numbers we were looking for.

We broke the set with the 4-iron because I was only able to muster around 141-143 mph out of the MB 4-iron, short of the required 5 mph ball-speed gap. Past the 5-iron was clearly my point of diminishing returns. Switching to the 3DP Tour 4-iron, the feeling of effortlessness returned.

Why this 5-iron is my favorite

While I had hoped to have played more golf by this point in the year, I’ve hit enough shots to know how much of a game-changer this 5-iron is.

During indoor testing, I hit 8 shots with the 5-iron and recorded a 3.7-yard carry standard deviation with an average carry of 204.5 yards. That basically means my 5-iron is like a pitching wedge, but from 205 yards.

Knowing that is confidence-inspiring, but the ease with which I can still work the ball up, down, left or right has really proved the club’s worth.

My goal with long irons is to make sure I’m just not losing strokes, but with this MB 5-iron, I feel like I finally have a weapon with which I can attack greens from 200 yards.

Gary Woodland’s Cobra OPTM Max LS-K driver isn’t just a weapon off the tee, it’s also a fully armored tank!

Woodland got his long-awaited fifth PGA Tour victory Sunday, seven years after his marquee U.S. Open win, and the driver was a big reason why.

The 41-year-old, who leads the PGA Tour in driving distance and clubhead speed, was dialed at Memorial Park Sunday, leading the field in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee in the final round on his way to a five-shot victory.

Woodland plays one of the coolest driver setups on the PGA Tour, opting for Cobra’s prototype OPTM Max LS-K driver, something Cobra Tour Rep Ben Schomin described as a “working prototype” earlier this season. It’s essentially a lower-spin, fade-biased version of Cobra’s retail Max K driver that was specifically built with Woodland in mind when he started playing Cobra’s DS-ADAPT Max-K driver last season.

“This is my 18th year on Tour and the drivers that I’ve played when I’ve driven the golf ball well have been back-weighted,” Woodland told GOLF in February, referring to the deeper CG of drivers designed for game-improvement players. “Everyone wants front weight to get the spin down and distance. But for some reason, I’ve been back with it, and I started struggling with spin last year. I went through all the drivers, and I got to their Max K driver last year, and it was low spin for me for some reason.”

With that deep CG, Woodland prefers a lower lofted head, which is why his driver measures in at just 6.4 degrees of loft. He also pairs it with a telephone pole-like Ventus Black 8-X shaft.

When Max Homa breifly switched into the prototype earlier this year, Schomin explained that because the LS-K is not a production model like the regular OPTM LS, X and Max-K, they can still make changes to it. The goal is to test design and performance concepts to potentially utilize in future production models.

Compared to the production Max-K, the LSK has a similar shape, but a lower and deeper CG to lower spin and produce a neutral-to-fade bias, Schomin said.

As opposed to the retail OPTM line of drivers, which have glossy crowns, the LS-K has a matte finish because it’s easier for the company to get it out on Tour. Woodland has been using the prototype since the PNC Championship in December.

He also pairs the prototype head with a lead pipe-esque Fujikura Ventus Black 8-X with VeloCore+, a shaft many players have in their 5/7-woods, but Woodland loves a heavy driver shaft at a shorter length to pair with his smoother tempo.

Gary Woodland is back in the PGA Tour winner’s circle for the first time since his U.S. Open win almost seven years ago.

The 41-year-old recently opened up about his struggles with PTSD following brain surgery in late 2023. Now he’s back among the game’s elite, leading the tour in driving distance and clubhead speed while earning his fifth PGA Tour victory this week at the Texas Children’s Houston Open.

His driving was one of his keys to victory this past week, as he ranked seventh in distance at nearly 322 yards off the tee while placing 15th in Strokes Gained.

Woodland plays one of the coolest driver setups on the PGA Tour, opting for Cobra’s prototype OPTM Max LS-K driver, something Cobra Tour Rep Ben Schomin described as a “living prototype” earlier this season. It’s essentially a lower-spin, fade-biased version of Cobra’s retail Max K driver that was specifically built with Woodland in mind when he started playing Cobra’s DS-ADAPT Max-K driver last season.

But for some reason, I’ve been back with it, and I started struggling with spin last year. I went through all the drivers, and I got to their Max K driver last year, and it was low spin for me for some reason.”

With that deep CG, Woodland prefers a lower lofted head, which is why his driver measures in at just 6.4 degrees of loft. He also pairs it with a telephone pole-like Ventus Black 8-X shaft.

Schomin and Woodland also made a major change this week just before his win. Woodland made his second iron shaft change of the season.

He started the year playing a softer Nippon Modus 130 X after he fell in love with the feel when he added it to the bag last fall. But Schomin never saw it as the best option for him, and they went back to the Dynamic Gold X100 last month.

That was the shaft he initially switched to from the KBS C-Taper 130X he used most of last year because he was trying to neutralize his severely out-to-in path.

“So he was trying to neutralize his delivery a little more and not swing so left,” Cobra Tour Rep Ben Schomin told GOLF. “Some dynamics changing in there, and as his swing is becoming more neutral, the X100 was really good. He felt like he could hit a little draw, felt like he could hit a little cut.”

Woodland’s delivery dynamics impart a ton of spin on the ball, which is why he was in the C-Taper, but he felt that the shaft was too boardy last year.

But, with all the speed Woodland has picked up this year, the X100s weren’t scrubbing enough spin, and Woodland was finding his irons were coming up short.

“So X100 just is starting to feel a little bit too soft. And again, going back to C-Taper 130X is something he’s played with for a long time. Immediately, we knew at some point he was probably going back into them.”

Schomin was so sure Woodland was going back to the C-Taper that he kept a set of King MBs with the shafts on the Cobra Tour Truck for Woodland. That set sat on the Cobra truck for nearly a year until earlier this month when Schomin said Cobra tech James Posey sent them back to HQ because they were taking up space.

“He’s like, ‘Is that set still on there?’ and I was like … ‘No, we had just sent them back.’ So I had to go build a new set of irons,” Schomin said. “We just did 5, 7 and 9 iron to get a quick comparison. Sure enough, he’s like, ‘Yeah, these feel great.’ Then I went and completed the rest of the set.”

With as much speed as Woodland has gained, he actually said the C-Tapers, one of the most stout profiles out there, feel much better than before.

“Now he’s like, no, they actually feel good,” Schomin said. “They don’t feel quite the same as X100, don’t get me wrong, but they definitely feel like I’ve got the speed now moving those things.”

Welcome to Fully Equipped’s weekly Tour equipment report. Every Friday of PGA Tour weeks (plus other times, if news warrants), GOLF equipment editor Jack Hirsh runs you through some of the biggest news surrounding golf clubs on Tour, including changes, tweaks and launches.

Titleist’s GTS drivers are here — and they’ve already made a huge splash on Tour.

At this week’s Texas Children’s Houston Open, 24 players switched into the new GTS2 or GTS3 driver, which is nearly double the 13 players who immediately adopted the predecessor GT drivers at their launch two years ago at the Memorial. Albeit that was a limited Signature Event field.

It’s especially notable that Titleist has moved up its driver launch two months from previous years, as these drivers will be in play for the Masters. Titleist has gradually moved its driver launches up from the early fall to summer — and now to spring. They teased the GTS launch with social media posts earlier this month proclaiming “Finally, a driver faster than GT.”

The most notable number from the 24 early adopters of the GTS is that 18 of them were the presumably more forgiving GTS2 model. At the GT launch in 2024, the splits were 2 GT2s, 10 GT3s and 1 GT4 in the 73-man field.

Titleist’s “3” head used to dominate Tour usage, but that’s changed over the most recent releases, and especially with the GT release, with the GT2 and GT3 looking almost indistinguishable at address. Much of the split between GTS2 and GTS3 this week can be attributed to 14 GT2 players happening to make the switch this week.

There was one cross-model switcher this week in Tom Hoge, who went from a GT3 to a GTS2. Free agent Kevin Roy also went from a Ping G440 LST to a GTS2, one of six free agents to play the new driver this week.

That’s a trend for a while we’ve been seeing where companies are blurring the lines between the forgiving driver model and the faster low-spin model, and more and more players are seeking out additional forgiveness. While the GTS4 model — the “4” model has recently been the sub-460 cc niche model for ultra-high spin players — didn’t see action on the PGA Tour, two Korn Ferry players and one LPGA pro put it in play this week.

Across all three Tours, there were 53 GTS drivers in play with GTS2 the overwhelming winner, putting 31 in play. In fact, the GTS2 was tied as the most played driver model in Houston this week as Titleist again led the driver count with 27 additional drivers for a total of 51.

One of the six free agents making the switch at Memorial Park, Jeff Kang, was last on Tour in driving accuracy entering the week. But, armed with a new GTS2, Kang led the field Thursday with 11-of-13 fairways hit.

While he don’t have any individual performance gains or technical information yet from Titleist, it seems like the major changes involve customizable weighting. The GTS3 gained an adjustable back weight, while the GTS2 gained an adjustable front weight and GTS4 (3 went in play on LPGA and KFT) gained the GTS3’s adjustable front weight track.

Adding the plus to Red and Black

Fujikura launched its new Ventus TR Black and TR Red with VeloCore+ shafts, adding to the TR Blue with VeloCore+ launched at the beginning of the year, and saw two of the new shafts go into play immediately on the PGA Tour.

But what was more unique about this launch is that Fujikura launched the new shafts simultaneously on the PGA Tour, Korn Ferry Tour and the PGA Tour Champions in the same week.

“It’s something we’ve never done before, really, because anytime we launch a product, it’s primarily just on the PGA Tour,” Fujikura Tour Rep Marshall Thompson told GOLF. “So it was amazing to be able to hit multiple tours at the same time. We were able to cover more ground, and we had a lot of success.”

On the PGA Tour, both Aldrich Potgieter and Neal Shipley added the new Ventus TR Black with VeloCore+, while Min Woo Lee, a longtime OG Ventus Blue player switched to the previously released TR Blue+ in his Quantum TD driver after moving to a Ventus Black with VeloCore+ earlier this season.

On the Korn Ferry Tour, where Thompson was deployed this week at the Club Car Championship in Savannah, Georgia, five players tested the new TR+ shafts with three players adding the new TR Blue and two more players trying out the new TR Black.

“Usually when we build stuff up, I expect it to go in bags in maybe a month, maybe a month and a half. But to have instant success and to have them go in bags immediately was very rewarding. It just shows the hard work that went into designing the shaft,” Thompson said. “It’s a good start, and we’ll see if we can get a few more in next week. But man, I will take any of them that go in play the first week. We’re smiling from ear to ear over here.”

Another handful of players, including Padraig Harrington and Vijay Singh with TR Black, tested the new shafts on the PGA Tour Champions.

Woodland has A-game with C-Taper

Gary Woodland is finally seeing all the parts of his game come together as he’s opened up a four-shot lead heading into the weekend in Houston and it coincides with his second iron shaft change already this season.

It’s actually a change back to the KBS C-Taper 130 X iron shaft he’s used previously, including last year, but last summer, he switched to the Dynamic Gold X100 to get more feel as he was trying to neutralize his hard left swing path.

“So he was trying to neutralize his delivery a little more and not swing so left,” Cobra Tour Rep Ben Schomin told GOLF. “Some dynamics changing in there, and as his swing is becoming more neutral, the X100 was really good. He used that toward the end of the fall and early this year, but Schomin never thought it was his best option. The problem was Woodland had started swinging faster, as he now leads the PGA Tour in driving distance and clubhead speed at 41 years old.

Drivers

That led him back to X100s because of that increase in speed in February. But then he still noticed some shots, especially into the wind, were coming up short because of too much spin.

“He’s like, ‘Man, I hit like four shots that I thought I hit really, really good. Like I flushed them, and I come up way short.’ So typically like into the wind, and his tendency is to spin it more,” Schomin said. “So X100 just is starting to feel a little bit too soft. And again, going back to C-Taper 130X is something he’s played with for a long time. Immediately, we knew at some point he was probably going back into them.”

Schomin was so sure Woodland was going back to the C-Taper that he kept a set of King MBs with the shafts on the Cobra Tour Truck for Woodland. But as fate would have it, Cobra Tour tech James Posey just sent those irons back to Cobra’s HQ earlier this month, so Schomin had to shaft up a new set this week.

While C-Taper typically has a harsher feel, with Woodland’s added speed, they feel a lot better than before.

“Now he’s like, no, they actually feel good,” Schomin said. “They don’t feel quite the same as X100, don’t get me wrong, but they definitely feel like I’ve got the speed now moving those things.”

Wedges are the precision scoring tools of a golfer’s bag and there’s a ton of nuance that goes into finding the right setup. Wedge fitting is often a supremely overlooked process for building out your golf bag, but our panelists spared no time in dialing in the optimal loft and grind combinations for our games.

Perhaps no other category across all of Fully Fit was dominated like wedges were by Titleist’s Vokey SM11 wedges, with four of our panelists selecting Vokey’s latest line for our 2026 bags.

Interestingly, between our four lob wedges, only two of the six grinds selected were M and S, but each grind had both a 60 and 58-degree lobber represented.

Why they’re in my bag: The new Vokey SM11 switch from my previous set of SM10s was the easiest test I have made over this whole project. What really makes the transition so easy is the process and lengths Vokey fittings go through. I got to work with TPI’s Louis Raynard, who put me through the blind grind test. We hit shots with each of the six options, listening for strike, watching the launch window and then the spin on the green. Neither he nor I knew which one we were hitting at the time.

By the end, we revealed the M-Grind as my favorite, which was surprising as I’d previously played the higher bounce D- or V-Grinds. But the more I think about it, the more I realize the work I’ve done to shallow my attack angle, and the M-Grind was producing much more spin.

I stuck with the 54.14F sand wedge bent to 55˚ to contrast that mid-bounce lob wedge. I’m also sticking with the 46˚ specialty pitching wedge because of the higher bounce on the sole and getting the Vokey grooves out of the rough. Another big change I made with this set was switching from my wedge shafts (previously the DG S400) to my iron shafts, which brought more control with clubs, that are full-swing clubs, even if I don’t always hit them “full.” The other thing was switching from the DG S400 to the Project X wedge shaft. Even though I’m leaving the standard Project X shafts in my irons, the wedge part gives me the ability to flight the ball down without trying to force it, something I’ve always struggled with.

Why they’re in my bag: I had the very fortunate opportunity to work with both Jose Miraflor and Cobra tour rep Ben Schomin on this set of wedges. With the 50º and the 56º, we took off just a little bit of the toe and the heel, and we also gave the leading edge a bit more of a blunt shape, and slightly squared off. My primary use for the 56º is on full shots, or out of the bunker, so something with a bit more of a ski effect on the leading edge was really helpful. The W-grind is quite lovely on the 56, as it’s a lower bounce option that’s easy to play on approach shots, but it’s a wide sole that works really well in wet conditions or out of the bunkers. The 60º has been through a couple of iterations and the latest one, courtesy of Ben and a night spent on the Cobra tour truck, is actually inspired by a Rickie Fowler custom grind I found lying on the truck one night. Lots of heel relief, and a little bit taken off the back of the wedge to make it come out of the turf a bit cleaner. The Cobra King wedges are highly underrated, but they’re really, really good. The spin just as well as anything else, and I really appreciate the shape of the wedges as well as the CG locations. They just seem to come out of a perfect window for my game. Yes, I am a bit biased. It helps when you’ve gotten a little extra attention and some custom grinds.

Why they’re in my bag: When PGA Tour fitter Aaron Dill dials you in, there is kind of nowhere else to go. As a player who always wants to hit his wedges down, the SM11 brought down my launch by about two to three degrees with a ton of spin. Couple that with the new Callaway CTX ball, and it’s become a no-brainer.

Why they’re in my bag: I selected the Vokey SM11 wedges because the combination of grinds gives me the versatility I want around the greens. The 52° features an F-grind that’s great on full-swing shots. The fuller sole inspires confidence and resists digging. For my 56°, we went with a D-grind. It gives me a blend of forgiveness and versatility, so I can open the face without fear of the leading edge digging. And the 60° S-grind has a slightly narrower sole that feels reliable when I need to control my trajectory and spin on delicate shots.

Why they’re in my bag: I think they’re in the bag because of the blind wedge test my fitter put me through. He laid all different types of grinds on the turf and wouldn’t let me look at the grind before playing various short game shots. We played to short-sided pins, bump-and-run pins, hop-and-stop pins, and even a few shots from bunkers. The whole point became obvious: some grinds work for me and how my short game mind wants to attack various shots. My short-game instincts, if you will. Imagine being able to pick from the best features from all your favorite irons to make the perfect one for your game.

Take the offset from one set, the blade length from another and the topline thickness from a different one.

It sounds like a dream only available to Tour players, but it might be closer than you think for the average consumer.

On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, co-host Johnny Wunder and clubfitter Bryan LaRoche of BryanGolf discussed what a game-changer Cobra’s 3DP iron program could end up being.

Wunder explains that he landed on a set of Cobra 3DP Tours because Cobra Tour Rep Ben Schomin was able to customize a set for him.

“I was really close on a set of [TaylorMade P]770s, because 770 is another great iron for me, right?” Wunder said. “The only reason I didn’t pick the 770s is because I can’t make them with offset, right? I don’t want to bend them any stronger. I can’t build offset into those things.

The KING 3D Printed TOUR irons utilize 3D printing technology to unlock a new realm of performance. “But I’m getting the same performance out of the 3DP Tours. And all I said to Ben was like, ‘Can you make these with offset?’

“He’s like, ‘yeah, I have a set with offset.’ And literally handed me a set with offset.”

Wunder used to play the Callaway Apex TCB ’24 irons, which had short blade lengths and lots of offset. Schomin told him he could even have a set of 3DP Tours printed with the same look.

It probably won’t be long before a customer can order an iron with whatever shape characteristics they want.

Will that make a fitter like LaRoche’s job harder or easier?

“That would change everything. You never are gonna strike out on a set of irons with somebody,” LaRoche said. “You’re never gonna struggle to find what you need, performance wise, and pick all the look boxes.”

That future might be here before we know it!

Although with this year’s offerings of irons, if you can’t find a set, then that’s probably on you more than anything. While this part of the bag is so crucial, each of our team members came out of their fittings confident with the set of irons they landed on.

Why they’re in my bag: If you had asked me if I would have expected to come out of this project with a set of muscle back irons, I would have said yes, only because I knew these 3DP MBs would be those muscle backs. The 3DP MB will actually be the first set of blades I’ve ever owned, but these are obviously not your ordinary blades. Because they are as compact as a typical blade, I almost experience a similar phenomenon to when I started playing a mini driver. It doesn’t look like I can hit these things solid and up in the air, but it sure is easy to do anyway.

I really love the process I went through with Cobra fitter Andrew Lusty here, as we changed shafts to the Modus 120 X (As mentioned above) to eliminate my right miss and gain consistency. I also benefit that Cobra’s standard lie angle is 62˚ on the 7-iron, so going the maximum two degrees flat really gets my start line in a good spot. The last thing we did was hit stock builds of each head through the set to figure out where we would jump to the 3DP Tour. Shockingly, it only took me two swings to commit to a 3DP MB 5-iron, but that’s where the magic ran out because I couldn’t hit my target ball speed with the 4-iron. When we switched to a 3DP Tour head, it was easy again.

1 key data point: 3.7 yards carry yardage standard deviation. I could give you my numbers with a 9-iron here or a 7-iron or even a 6-iron, but that 3.7 number I showed you was produced over 8 balls with a 5-iron with an average carry of 204.5 yards. This basically makes my 5-iron play like an 8-iron and as someone who occasionally forgets how to hit a long-/mid-iron, that’s a huge advantage.

Why they’re in my bag: I’ve played the Cobra King CB/MB set for the better part of the last 4 years, and putting the 3DP MB in the bag was a no-brainer. It gives me the turf interaction, size, and relative shape of the MB that I love with forgiveness that exceeds the CBs that I love. It’s a fairly easy switch to end up with these in the bag for me. We decided to throw a 3DP Tour 5-iron in the top end of the bag for just a touch more forgiveness, but really it’s for easier tee shots on longer par 3s. I may actually end up doing a little bit of custom work to the sole on that one, but more to come on that if I get the opportunity.

1 key data point: Forgiveness. At the beginning of this, I mentioned that the weakest part of my game is iron play on the course. These are going to and have already helped me with that. I have tried a ton of irons this year, with sneaky contenders in the Wilson Staff Model CBs, but the Cobras just continue to prove their worth every time I test. It’s not about the good ones, it’s about the bad ones. And the bad ones from these can be just as good as the good ones from others. It’s a no-brainer in forgiveness.

Why it’s in my bag: Look, feel, perfect amount of offset, and north-to-south dispersion. The Cobra 3DP Tour has an awesome low-face miss, and I appreciate the fact that when I do smash one, spin stays in a great spot. Typically, irons like this lose spin when you chip it or if you try to hammer one. These do nothing of the sort. The Srixon ZXi5 5-iron is in there for pure ball speed and gapping. I wanted something with a similar offset to my Cobras, but also cranked the ball speed up a bit to gap into the Ping G430 4H. I was getting 133-135 mph consistently with the Srixon vs anything else. Same Idea with the Srixon UT, it’s a 15th club that goes in when I need a lower-launching, hotter 4-iron.

Why they’re in my bag: I selected these irons because of how well they launch and spin the ball compared to other models I’ve played. The forged L‑Face with a V‑taper design helps generate a ton of ball speed and a super high launch, which really boosts my spin and stopping power into greens, something I’ve really been wanting from my irons. With these in the bag, I feel confident attacking pins and holding greens, even from longer distances.

Why they’re in my bag: They were probably always supposed to be. I got fitted into T100s over the summer and while those blades are beautiful to look at, they’re just not forgiving enough for me, as I found out during my next fitting … and the others I did on our trip. I found a lot of success with TaylorMade’s P770s and Cobra’s 3DP Tour line, but I think the T150s seem to look better to me when I stare down at them. Probably because I’ve been playing Titleist irons already. There’s something to be said for sameness and comfort. (Will I be keeping the others as backups? Absolutely.)

1 key data point: Dispersion distance. Like the longer parts of my bag, my mishits — which are still struck fine — just weren’t flying consistently enough to match my best strikes. If my 7-iron is a 170-yard club, my 7-iron mishits were flying 152 yards, weak and to the right. Getting T150s into the bag just narrowed the gap between my pure strikes and my misses, which now feel like they’re still going 160 yards. As we said above, that could be the difference between a soft lie in the rough and taking a drop from a hazard. That’s everything.
