Alex Fitzpatrick’s rise to the PGA Tour was well documented and fast.

The younger brother of 2022 U.S. Open Champion Matt Fitzpatrick went from winless DP World Tour pro to PGA Tour winner and full-fledged member in the span of four weeks, thanks to his win at the Zurich Classic with Matt.

That put him straight into the field for back-to-back Signature Events in Miami and Charlotte. He didn’t have to keep playing on the DP Tour to try and earn his PGA Tour membership for 2027 and he definitely doesn’t have to go to Q-School.

In fact, Fitzpatrick is exempt on the PGA Tour through the end of 2028 now.

After such a whirlwind promotion, was the pressure on to perform after his brother helped get him PGA Tour membership?

On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Subpar, co-hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stotlz asked Fitzpatrick that very question.

“You know, I felt like there was a little bit of pressure to go out and show my game is good enough. Like every golfer, I wanna be on the PGA Tour and I felt like my game belonged there. So I, that’s why when you asked about sinking in it, I guess it took, it didn’t take as long as I thought.”

Fitzpatrick left little doubt that he belonged with the game’s best players. He finished T9 in Miami and held the 54-hole lead at the Truist Championship before finishing solo fourth.

After a made cut at the PGA Championship, he kept his run of fine play going last week at the Memorial with a T6 showing.

“I don’t know if that’s because maybe I feel so comfortable out here now,” Fitzpatrick continued. “But yeah, I was super happy with how I played the two weeks. And, you know, even going into Sunday in Charlotte, like I felt really comfortable. I didn’t really feel any pressure to go out and win. You know, I don’t think many people expected me to be in the last group on Sunday. So, but I also felt like my game is in a really good spot and I felt like I had a good chance to win.”

Eight days ago, brothers Matt Fitzpatrick and Alex Fitzpatrick won the Zurich Classic in New Orleans, although the big winner was Alex, the younger brother to the 2022 U.S. Open champion.

With the Zurich being a team event, both players on the winning squad received the valuable two-year membership on the PGA Tour, not to mention spots in Signature Events. So while the Zurich win was a minor step for Matt, now the No. 4 player in the world, it was a significant moment for Alex, who was 141st entering the week.

Alex Fitzpatrick was in the midst of a good season on the DP World Tour — having tied for sixth at the Joburg Open and winning the Hero Indian Open in March — but last week we got to see him for the first time as a PGA Tour member, and at a Signature Event alongside the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Young and Collin Morikawa. And how did he fare in just his 12th career PGA Tour start?

He tied for ninth and won half a million dollars.

“There’s still loads of expectations that I put on myself,” Alex said Friday at the Cadillac Championship, when he was asked if he plays freer now that he secured his Tour card. “It was unbelievable to win, but then you come out here and you’re expected to compete and you expect to play well and there’s always that you want to try and perform every week. For me everything’s a bonus at this stage, which does help, but I’m still a golfer at the end of the day and I’m sure I’ll hit bad shots and I’ll still get annoyed.”

Alex, who at 27 is four years younger than his brother — who took last week off — fired rounds of 72-66-74-67 at Trump National Doral’s Blue Monster course. He finished at nine under, which was 10 behind runaway winner Young but only four back of Scheffler, who was solo second. He also led the field in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee (+4.15) and driving accuracy, finishing 63rd in putting.

“I’m doing the right things with my golf game,” he said Friday. “I’m working towards the right things. It’s exciting. I feel like my game has been good for a while now. I think for a few months it didn’t really translate on the golf course how I would have liked, but it’s really taken a turn the past two months. I feel in control of my ball, which is nice.”

Last Sunday, after winning the Zurich, Alex Fitzpatrick said he had a flight to catch to Turkey for the DP World Tour’s Turkish Airlines Open. He didn’t catch it because he no longer needed to. Mikael Lindberg won that tournament Sunday, earning $466,437. Fitzpatrick took home $500,000 for his T9. And that’s after winning $1.372 million in New Orleans.

He’s also finally catching up from all the text messages and congratulatory notes received from his victory. Some of those still arrived during the Cadillac Championship, where he was busy proving he fits in just fine.

“The overwhelming feeling of like joy and happiness is yet to go away, so I think for me this year it’s going to be a whirlwind and no matter what happens it will be a success,” he said. “I can’t believe how many people have come up to me and congratulated me and players and caddies and staff, it’s been incredible. So yeah they really made me feel welcome, and that was really nice.”

The way Alex Fitzpatrick earned his PGA Tour card, by winning the Zurich Classic with his brother Matt, seemed like a dream. If it was, no one better wake him up, because that dream has continued this week at the 2026 Cadillac Championship.

Playing in the first event of his new PGA Tour career, Fitzpatrick is fighting a “whirlwind” of emotions. He’s also, incredibly, fighting for the lead and the $3.6 million winner’s prize at Trump Doral.

Beginning the year on the DP World Tour, Fitzpatrick put together his career highlight with a win at the Hero Indian Open in late March. Then last week, he teamed with his older brother Matt to win the PGA Tour’s 2026 Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

With the victory, he earned a PGA Tour card for two years and spots in the remaining Signature Events. So after enjoying his win, he quickly flew to Florida for this week’s Cadillac Championship.

In his Friday evening press conference, Fitzpatrick spoke about the “whirlwind” experience that has changed his life in a matter of days.

“The text messages and stuff has slowed down, but the overwhelming feeling… and happiness is yet to go away. So I think for me this year it’s going to be a whirlwind and no matter what happens it will be a success,” Fitzpatrick said. “I can’t believe how many people have come up to me and congratulated me and players and caddies and staff, it’s been incredible. So yeah they really made me feel welcome, and that was really nice.”

He also shared some intimate details from last week’s emotional victory with his brother.

“Winning with my brother kind of far exceeded any expectations I ever had. I can’t quite describe the feeling I had tapping in and looking over at my brother on 18. It’s impossible to try and translate into words. But, yeah, I’m sure the rest of this year you’ll see me with a smile on my face no matter what,” Fitzpatrick said.

He also admitted, “I don’t know how it would have felt winning by myself. I’m sure that would have been an amazing feeling.”

Incredibly, he might get that chance this weekend. After a modest 72 in the opening round, Fitzpatrick fired a six-under 66 on Friday to charge up the leaderboard into a tie for sixth.

He’s still seven shots behind leader Cameron Young. But there are very few players between him and the lead, and anything can happen over the final 36 holes at the Blue Monster.

Fitzpatrick confessed that finding himself in contention at his first Signature Event, where the purse is $20 million, is “exciting” and that it “means a lot” to him.

“It means a lot. I think the nice thing is it feels like I’m doing the right things with my golf game. I’m working towards the right things. Yeah, it’s exciting. I feel like my game has been good for a while now. I think for a few months it didn’t really translate on the golf course how I would have liked, but it’s really taken a turn the past two months. I feel in control of my ball, which is nice. So hopefully I keep hitting fairways and hitting greens and yeah, we’ll see what happens this weekend.”

“It is important, but it’s also not important. I think there’s bigger things in life than golf, and as much as it was amazing to win this week, I’m just trying to enjoy it. That’s the big thing for me. If I can go out there and enjoy myself, doesn’t matter what happens, I’ll be okay,” Fitzpatrick said.

Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick’s emotional victory at last week’s Zurich Classic was not the first time the brothers teamed up for a big win. Back in 2013, a 13-year-old Alex caddied for Matt during his U.S. Amateur victory at the Country Club.

If you thought that would be a dream-come-true for the pre-High School Alex, you thought wrong.

It turns out that the Fitzpatrick parents had to bribe their young son with a shiny new device to convince him to carry Matt’s bag that week, as Alex explained on Tuesday at the 2026 Cadillac Championship.

Matt is currently on the hottest streak of his career, having won three PGA Tour events since late March to rise to World No. 3. But Alex is on a tear of his own.

After capturing his first DP World Tour win in March, he teed it up with Matt at the PGA Tour’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans last week, for what he was expecting to simply be a good opportunity for “spending time with my brother.”

Alex got the family time he was looking for, but he also walked away with a victory, giving him a PGA Tour card for two years, over $1 million in prize money and spots in the remaining Signature Events.

So while Matt is taking it easy this week following his third win of the year, Alex is in Florida to play the Cadillac Championship.

Alex Fitzpatrick reveals parents’ bribery scheme to get him to caddie for Matt

During his pre-tournament press conference, Fitzpatrick was asked about his original partnership with his brother Matt at the 2013 U.S. Amateur.

For outsiders, it was a fairytale week that harkened back to Francis Ouimet’s U.S. Open win at Brookline one hundred years before, when 10-year-old Eddie Lowery famously carried his bag.

For Alex, the vibe was very different. In fact, he didn’t want to caddie for Matt that week at all. Their dad, Russell Fitzpatrick, was then forced to take an extreme measure to make it happen: bribery. He promised to buy Alex a new phone if he caddied for Matt in the tournament.

“I only caddied for [Matt] at the U.S. Amateur because my dad promised me a new phone,” Alex revealed in his Tuesday press conference at Trump Doral. “That was only reason why I caddied for him, because it was too expensive to buy a caddie for the week, so I got dragged into that one.”

Alex added that he did indeed get his new phone after Matt won, calling it a “win-win.”

“And then he won and then I got a new phone, so it was a win-win all around,” he joked.

It’s been a whirlwind few days since the Zurich triumph, but now Alex is set to chart his own PGA Tour career without his brother by his side beginning at the Cadillac Championship.

While Matt won’t be there in person, he did send Alex a touching note of encouragement for the Cadillac the morning after their Zurich victory.

“He just said, you know, he said enjoy it. He sent me a really nice text the morning afterwards that was like, you know, as much as this win is both of us, you deserve to be here, you’re playing some great golf, go out there and show them what you have and just try and enjoy it as much as you can really, that was the biggest message from him,” Alex said on Tuesday.

Fitzpatrick tees off for the first round of his new PGA Tour career on Thursday at 1:20 p.m. ET.

Matt Fitzpatrick and Alex Fitzpatrick’s win at the Zurich Classic means there’s a new gear free agent on the PGA Tour.

With the team victory, Alex earns a PGA Tour membership through the end of the 2028 PGA Tour season while Matt becomes 2026’s first three-time winner.

Like his brother, Alex is a gear-free agent (aside from Matt’s deal with Bettinardi for his putter) and his bag, while not quite as unique as his brother’s, has a few neat quirks to it, including his three TaylorMade Qi4D fairways (making for five TM fairways between the brothers) and his Vokey WedgeWorks A+-Grind lob wedge.

Matt Fitzpatrick will collect a check, but really, Alex Fitzpatrick will emerge from this week’s Zurich Classic as the winner.

You needed only to watch the scene on the 18th green on Sunday evening at the Zurich Classic to know that was true. It was there, on the 18th, that the Fitzpatrick Brothers emerged victorious after a glorious mid-range sand-shot from elder brother (and U.S. Open champ) Matt. And it was there, on the 18th, that Alex realized the fulfillment of his greatest life dream.

“Yeah, I’m still lost for words,” Alex Fitzpatrick said afterward, still gobsmacked. “Just an overwhelming emotion of happiness. Like Matt said, at the start of the week it was coming here to be a family and spend time with each other, eat Mr. B’s, and have a great week. To be sitting here now and done what we did, yeah, I’m pretty speechless.”

If you wanted to know why Alex Fitzpatrick was speechless, the trophy celebration didn’t provide all the answers. You see, his win was bigger than just a title at a PGA Tour event, and bigger than a winner’s check. By winning at the Zurich, the younger Fitzpatrick also clinched a series of career-altering perks, which we list in their entirety below.

What Alex Fitzpatrick really won at the Zurich Classic

1. A PGA Tour card

The biggest and most significant benefit of Alex Fitzpatrick’s victory is PGA Tour status. By virtue of a winner’s exemption, Alex earned full PGA Tour status through the end of 2028, giving him the rarest gift in pro golf — job security — for the next 18 months.

2. A PGA Championship invite

Hopefully Alex hadn’t planned out his spring break for the second week in May, because those plans went up in smoke the second his final putt hit the bottom of the cup. Fitzpatrick earned an invite into the PGA Championship at Aronimink with his win, giving him his second career major championship start, following only the 2023 Open Championship.

3. A Players Championship invite

Thanks to his victory on Sunday, Fitzpatrick will also play in the PGA Tour’s flagship event next March at TPC Sawgrass.

4. Signature Events!

If you’re a player with $3 million in career earnings and you’re hoping to multiply your bank account, the Tour’s $20 million Signature Events series is a pretty good place to start. Fitzpatrick will have the chance to do exactly that over the coming months thanks to the Signature Events invites he received on Sunday evening. Fitzpatrick will spend the rest of his 2026 teeing up in some of the most lucrative events in golf, including the Cadillac Championship, Truist Championship, Memorial Tournament and Travelers Championship.

5. $1,375,000

Fitzpatrick’s win wasn’t just about money, but it was a little bit about money. He’d won $3 million in his career as a pro prior to Sunday’s victory, and he won nearly half of that total on Sunday evening, adding $1.375 million to his career earnings with the win.

Most weeks on the PGA Tour, the results of victory are best measured in millions of dollars. Just not this week, at the Zurich Classic. The biggest impact of this week’s event was always of a different form — it would mean full PGA Tour membership for someone who didn’t have it, as numerous non-PGA Tour winners found themselves in contention. 

Littered among the pack was one of the best golfers on the planet, Matt Fitzpatrick, paired up with his younger brother, Alex. Even if Alex isn’t a top 5 player in the world, he’s been playing like one of the 100 best in recent months. He is no slouch, as evidenced by his recent win on the DP World Tour, but he was not a Tour member when he woke up Sunday morning, earning entry as a sponsor’s exemption.

But as Sunday played out and tension increased on the back nine, the Brothers Fitzpatrick seemed to grow tight. They turned to the back nine with a four-shot lead but surrendered it in an hour’s time. Two different duos reached the clubhouse at 30 under and tied for the lead. But the Fitzpatrick’s would have the last chance to end it in regulation. 

Matt ripped a drive 322 yards into the fairway, offering Alex a hero moment. But younger brother — after carrying his brother, according to Matt at least, on the back nine — dumped his 9-wood into the greenside bunker short of the hole. Suddenly, a playoff looked incredibly likely. 

Alex still had an overnight flight back to Turkey for next week’s Turkish Airlines Open on the DPWT. But he had also done enough to put the ball in the hands of the No. 3 player in the world. From the center of the bunker, Matt Fitzpatrick took a full lash at it, carrying the ball all the way to the hole and spinning it back inside of one foot. 

“I got to the ball, and the lie was unbelievable,” Matt said later. “I couldn’t have placed it on a better tee. So I knew I was going to have to hit it, wind it all the way there.

“Did I plan that perfectly? Honestly, no, but you know, yeah, I played it to perfection. What more can I say?”

Alex shot his hands in the air when he saw the result, surely in part because his putt to become a PGA Tour member was as sure a thing as can be. He let the other pair playing with them finish out before remarking their ball and tapping in and dropping into a crouch with his head in his hands. In that moment, he wasn’t just the newest member of the PGA Tour. He had booked full status on Tour for 2027 and 2028, too.

That two-years-plus Tour-winner exemption is the biggest prize most pro golfers are constantly in pursuit of. It implies job security and the ability to select your schedule with clarity — not needing to see where you ranked to figure out if you’d get into any fields. It’s also one of the key things up for debate in the board room deciding the future competitive structure of the Tour. Should a highly meritocratic Tour be guaranteeing places to players years in advance? Not everyone thinks so. But that’ll get decided in the months to come, and Alex Fitzpatrick got his uncommon victory in at exactly the right time. In the post-round press conference, he was asked if he would be accepting this one-way ticket to pro golf’s promised land.

“I am, indeed,” Alex said, giddy. “I signed as quick as I could. I’m still shaking, and yeah, it was crazy.”

He no longer needs to jump on that flight to Turkey, because winning a Tour event in 2026 also pushes you instantly into the biggest fields in the sport for the next two months. Alex will now be in the fields of this coming week’s Signature Event, the Cadillac Championship, and the three others that follow this season: the Truist Championship, the Memorial Tournament and the Travelers Championship. He also earns a spot in this year’s PGA Championship, two weeks from now at Aronimink in Philadelphia, and next year’s Players Championship. So yeah, the month of May will be a sign of things to come for pro golf fans: there is a second Fitzpatrick on Tour. You’ll be seeing a lot of him.
