BLAINE, Minn. — Up until about 1:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, the most interesting thing to happen to Scott Piercy this week was on Saturday, when a new pair of shoes gave him blisters and he resorted to taking off one sneaker and walking in his sock between shots.

Besides that, all he was doing was making a ton of birdies and starting to run away with the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities, making the final round all but an anticlimactic slog.

But that didn’t last.

Piercy made five bogeys or worse in a seven-hole span — including a disastrous triple bogey — to lose his lead and eventually the tournament. Tony Finau took advantage, shot 67 and finished 17 under to win by three. Piercy shot 76 — tied for the fourth-worst score of the day — and tied for fourth, four back of Finau.

Piercy, who set a 54-hole tournament scoring record (18 under) through 54 holes, was two under after seven on Sunday. Even after he bogeyed 8 and 9, he still made the turn with a four-shot lead.

But he couldn’t stop the bleeding. He looked shaky and went bogey-birdie-bogey on Nos. 11-13, but a triple on the par-4 14th derailed his tournament.

Piercy was leading by two when he stepped to the 14th tee box, but his ball plugged in the bank of a fairway bunker. Before he even reached it, Finau rolled in a birdie putt on the 14th green the cut the lead to one. And when Piercy did reach his ball, that’s when the trouble really started.

Winning is hard.

Once leading by 5 today, Scott Piercy makes triple bogey on No. 14 and now trails by 2. pic.twitter.com/PX14BkZvaT
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) July 24, 2022

He couldn’t advance it out of the sand, and from 163 yards he took an aggressive line and tried to clear the water guarding the green. He didn’t make it and took a drop. His fifth shot spun off the front of the green, and he nearly chipped in for double, but the ball was about a rotation short of dropping. He tapped in for a triple-bogey 7 and fell into a tie for third, two behind Finau.

It was only a few minutes later when Finau increased his lead, draining a 32-footer for birdie on 15. Piercy added two more bogeys and a birdie over his last four; he shot 41 on the back.

Afterward, Piercy congratulated Finau near the clubhouse. They’ve known each other for over 15 years playing competitive golf against each other.

“I think I’m about as good an example as any of how tough it is to seal the deal,” Finau said. “Anytime you win one it’s awesome to get the respect of the guys that you’re playing against and I was really happy to see Scott. He was genuinely happy for me, which I think makes our game so great.”

BLAINE, Minn. — Tony Finau spent a portion of a six-hour weather delay on Saturday fishing with his kids, catching mostly bluegill in the pond by his rental home off the 10th fairway at TPC Twin Cities. When the tournament eventually resumed, he finished off a 65, which he hoped was enough to get him in the mix come Sunday.

Boy was it ever.

Just as Scott Piercy was imploding and giving up his massive lead, Finau got hot and took advantage, shooting a four-under 67 to win the 3M Open and claim his third career PGA Tour victory.

Finau finished 17-under overall, besting Sungjae Im and Emiliano Grillo by three. Piercy signed for a 76 — beating only four players on Sunday — and tied for fourth.

Finau’s family was here to greet him, too. His wife and five kids have been traveling with him nearly everywhere this summer, but they weren’t there when he won his other two PGA Tour starts, at the 2016 Puerto Rico Open and, most recently, the Northern Trust last fall. The latter ended a lengthy winless drought.

“To get a win with them here just means everything. It’s an amazing feeling to walk off a green knowing you won the tournament and walk right into your family, your kids’ arms,” Finau said. “It’s quite a special feeling. It’s something I’ve thought about and dreamed about for a long time. For that to come to fruition for me and my family today is pretty amazing. I’m humbled by it and hopefully my kids will remember this for a long time.”

It’s been an odd year for Finau. He’s played well, but many times not well enough. He’s finished as a runner-up twice this year and tied for fourth another time. This all came after a January-to-March stretch in which he missed three cuts in four starts.

The turning point, he says, came at the WGC-Match Play in March, which was two weeks after he shot 76-75 at the Players. He said he tweaked his setup, and it improved his aim and allowed him to swing more freely.

He entered this week as the highest-ranked player in the field (No. 16) and coming off a Sunday 66 at the Open Championship, which vaulted him into a tie for 28th.

“My game is as good as it’s ever been in really all aspects,” Finau said. “I expected myself to contend and win again this year, so to be able to do it this late in the season when you’re running out of tournaments and you put that type of expectation on yourself, it’s so satisfying.”

Still, Sunday’s finish was hard to predict. Finau entered the day five shots back as everyone was chasing Piercy, which was basically the story all week. He was tied for the lead after Round 1, leading by three after Day 2 and increased his lead to four before the final round, which included a 54-hole scoring record (18 under) that eclipsed the previous tournament record by three shots.

But Piercy looked shaky from the start and let his round get away from him around the turn. Even though he bogeyed 8 and 9, he still turned with a four-shot lead over Finau. Yet a couple of hours later, Finau walked to the 18th tee leading Piercy by four.

Piercy’s lead was three when he stepped to the dogleg par-4 14th, but his drive found a fried-egg lie on the slope of a fairway bunker and he couldn’t advance it out of the sand. He then took on the water with his next shot from 163 yards, but his ball splashed short of the green.

Before Piercy even hit his second shot on 14, Finau, who birdied 11, was rolling in a birdie putt on 14. By the time Piercy finished the hole, he was two behind Finau and in a tie for third.

Finau added the exclamation point a few minutes later, draining a 32-footer for birdie on 15. He made it three straight birdies when he got up and down from around the green on the short par-4 16th.

“When I really needed to hole putts, I did starting on 11, again on 14, 15, 16,” Finau said. “I mean, I made some really crucial putts when I really needed them.”

For how much the tournament changed, Finau didn’t even know he was leading until he saw a scoreboard on 16 green.

“My heart almost skipped a beat,” he said. “I couldn’t believe it. I said, ‘Wait a sec here.'”

And if you didn’t think this was Finau’s week, you were wrong. The golf gods gave him some help on 17. He overshot the green on the par-3, but instead of going well past the hole, it ricocheted off the grandstand and bounced back pin high in the rough. It held up on the ledge and missed going in the water by mere inches, and he calmly chipped it close and took his par. Leading by four, he flashed a big smile walking off the green and gave his ball a kiss. He knew he got away with one.

“I called bank in the air,” Finau quipped.

The assist helped, because his drive on 18 barely trickled into the water guarding the right side of the fairway. But it hardly mattered; he wasn’t losing this lead this late.

Finau had 3 1/2 feet for bogey. As he waited for his playing partners to finish, tournament organizers ushered in Finau’s family members to the ramp behind the green. Finau sank the putt, waved to the crowd and pumped his fist toward his family. This was their first time to celebrate this kind of ending with him.

Thirty minutes later, in the media center near the 18th green, one of his sons picked up the 3M Open trophy off the table where Finau was about to give his press conference. His dad quickly stopped him. It needed to be a centerpiece a few minutes later. Soon enough it would belong to the Finau family.

3M Open Final Round Preview

It’s a down week for the PGA Tour, which finds itself in a brief break between the Open Championship and the FedEx Cup Playoffs. While many of the Tour’s top players take the week off, many of its week-in, week-out grinders find themselves in key position to lock up status, move closer to the FedEx Cup Playoff standings, or, at the very least, pad their bank accounts.

Scott Piercy leads by four strokes at the 54-hole mark. The PGA Tour veteran has been remarkably consistent this week, with each of his scores from the week landing between 64 and 66. Piercy is looking for his first win in nearly 15 years on Sunday in Minnesota.

The odd summer of Hideki Matsuyama continued Thursday at the 3M Open, in Minneapolis, as the Japanese star made an epic quadruple-bogey 9 and then promptly withdrew following the round.

What a rollercoaster season this has been for Matsuyama, beginning with his Memorial Tournament start in early June. In the first round, Matsuyama made the turn at three over and was approached by a rules official to check his equipment. A white substance had been spotted on the face of his 3-wood, akin to white out, the rules official would later say. The result was blunt: Matsuyama had been disqualified for using a non-conforming club. He accepted the punishment, and moved on.

Two weeks later, he made a run at the U.S. Open.

Matsuyama was chasing when his final round began at The Country Club, teeing off early and trying to set a score the leaders couldn’t beat. After failing to break 70 in any of the first three rounds, Matsuyama played bogey-free and carded a 65, the best round of the week. It certainly gave Will Zalatoris, Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick something to think about as the wind picked up at Brookline. Ultimately, they all squeaked in past him, but Matsuyama finished solo fourth, one of the best results of his season.

It remains unclear of Matsuyama is much of a links golfer — his only top 10 in an Open Championship came nine years ago at Muirfield — and that was proven again this summer as he missed the cut at the Scottish Open, finished T68 at the Old Course and packed his bags for Minnesota.

Matsuyama was one over through eight holes on Thursday when he reached the 18th (his ninth of the day) at TPC Twin Cities, a gettable but occasionally treacherous par-5. We saw Sangmoon Bae dunk multiple balls in the water there in 2020 and still make par. We saw Sung Kang make a 12 made there last summer, and Rickie Fowler card an 8.

Matsuyama got off to a similar start as those aforementioned car crashes, pumping his drive out to the right and into the water hazard. With 240 yards to the hole, into the wind, Matsuyama took a drop and chunked his third, also finding the water. Reload!

If you watch the clip of this debacle below, you’ll notice the third and fifth shots are nearly identical. He lets go of the club with his right hand each time, finishing his swing like a baseball player, only much less sure of how far his long ball would carry. On his fifth swipe, he finally crossed the water, only to crash into the bank and fall back into the drink. Drop No. 3. Anytime your ShotLink results look like someone crocheting a scarf, you’re destined for a big number.

Since his ball crossed the hazard, Matsuyama was at least able to drop his ball further up the hole and hit a short iron into the green. But he airmailed that approach from 160 yards, his ball bouncing into the grandstand. Another drop, but this one came with free relief from the stands.

Playing his eighth, Matsuyama finally found some luck. He hit his wedge a bit too hard, but directly at the flag, crashing into it. Without the backstop, he may have found the hazard once again, which would have forced him into a double-digit score. Instead, he found his ball waiting there next to the flag for a 16-inch tap-in for a not-so-routine 9. You can check out the hazardous footage below.

3 balls in the water.

Quadruple bogey for Hideki Matusyama @3MOpen. pic.twitter.com/F4XuB9CLWf
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) July 21, 2022

Rattling (and frequent) as a 9 might be for you and me, Matsuyama did follow up his string of gaffes with a chip-in for birdie on the next hole, a nice reminder that, yes, he is a professional golfer after all, the 14th-ranked player in the world no less.

Matsuyama’s weird summer will continue somewhere else as he finished out the first round to card a 77. He then withdrew from the tournament, citing a “sore wrist,” according to the PGA Tour communications.

That’s a DQ-4th-MC-T68-WD stretch that only one of the best players in the world could pull off.

For those players hoping to have a chance at glory this weekend, they’ll first need to play well enough in Friday’s second round to survive the 36-hole cut and earn tee times for the weekend.

Things haven’t gone as well since for the World No. 14. Though he finished 4th at the U.S. Open, he struggled to a T68 last week at St. Andrews, missed the cut at the Scottish Open and was disqualified from the Memorial.

The good news for Hideki is that he’s returning to the 3M Open for the first time since the inaugural event in 2019, when he finished T7.

Hideki Matsuyama, the top-ranked player and only recent major champion in the field, has little to worry about playoffs-wise. He sits in 8th thanks to two early-season wins, but his play of late has been shaky, so he’s looking to build some momentum this week.

But one player beats out Matsuyama as the betting favorite, and his place in the FedEx standings is less secure. Tony Finau has failed to add to his PGA Tour win total after winning a playoff event last year (the Northern Trust). He’s currently just inside the bubble to qualify for the Tour Championship at No. 30, but he’ll need some strong play over the coming weeks to stay there.

Major season is in the rearview for the men, but the PGA Tour season is far from over, with the 2022 3M Open set to begin this week in Minnesota. According to the 3M Open betting odds via BetMGM, the two top-ranked players in the field are also the betting favorites. Here’s what you need to know.

2022 3M Open odds: This week’s favorites

Just in case you thought pro golf season was over, there’s $7.5 million on the line this week at the 3M Open, and the oddsmakers have placed Tony Finau as the favorite to win at +1400. Finau captured his second PGA Tour win at last year’s Northern Trust, and he placed T28 at the Old Course last week. Finau also has two runner-ups since May, so he’s playing well.

Finau is not the best-ranked player in the field, however. That honor belongs to Hideki Matsuyama, who is currently ranked No. 14 (Finau is No. 17). But the 2021 Masters champion trails FInau in the odds department, with +1600 odds to take home the trophy this week.

And don’t sleep on Sahith Theegala. The rising Tour star fired a two-under 70 in the final round of the Open on Sunday to finish T34 in what his very first Open and only his third major start. The 24-year-old from Orange, Calif., comes into this week T5 in odds to win at +2500.

2022 3M Open odds: Long shot of the week

For this week’s long shot, we’re going with a familiar face to many PGA Tour fans: 30-year-old Harry Higgs. The popular Tour pro has a distinctive style all his own, which has allowed him to gain followers without registering a win in his young career.

Higgs only has one top-10 finish this season, which is why he didn’t qualify for last week’s Open. Instead, he played in the opposite-field PGA Tour event, the Barracuda Championship in California, where he finished T11.

At +15000 odds to win, should you bet $10 on Higgs and then watch him capture his first Tour victory on Sunday, you’d walk away with $1,500.
