It’s the final round of the 2021 Open Championship, and soon a new Champion Golfer of the Year will be crowned. With a global pandemic cancelling last year’s Open, this will be the first time the Claret Jug has changed hands in two years.
While we still don’t know who will be crowned champion by day’s end, it’s sure to be an exciting finish at Royal St. George’s as a packed leaderboard vies for the title. But two years ago, the same couldn’t be said.
At Royal Portrush in 2019, the title was all but decided by Sunday’s final round thanks to an historic performance from Shane Lowry. He set the 54-hole scoring record for the championship at 16-under 197, and was four clear of the field when he teed off on Sunday.
During the final round, Lowry stretched the margin even more. Although the Irishman was only able to muster a one-over 71 on Sunday, he still distanced himself from the field to finish with a six-stroke victory to claim the first major title of his career.
