Augusta National location
Augusta National Golf Club is located in Augusta, Ga. The city is located in the northeastern portion of Georgia, right on border with South Carolina.
In fact, the town of North Augusta, S.C., is separated from Augusta only by the Savannah River. While it’s extremely difficult to get a tee time at Augusta National, there are lots of great publicly-accessible golf courses in the area, which you can read about here.
Augusta National history
Augusta National was founded by Clifford Roberts and golf legend Bobby Jones. It first opened its fairways and greens to member play in 1932.
The course was designed by Jones and one of the most celebrated golf course architects in history: Alister MacKenize.
The club is famously private and exclusive. It maintains a small membership in relation to other golf clubs, and it’s very hard to become a member. Only an official invite will earn you a chance. In addition to local families who have long been members, the membership includes former presidents, CEOs and star athletes.
Along with the main course, Augusta National features a famed Par 3 Course. The popular Masters Par 3 Contest is played at the Par 3 Course on Wednesday of Masters week.
Augusta National and the Masters
In 1934, Augusta National hosted its first Masters tournament. The Masters quickly became one of the most important tournaments in pro golf.
Eventually, it became considered one of the four major championships in men’s golf, along with the PGA Championship, U.S. Open and Open Championship.
Jack Nicklaus holds the record for most Masters wins, having captured the green jacket six times in his career. Tiger Woods is right behind Nicklaus with five Masters wins, the most recent coming in 2019.
Those two golf legends also are first and second in total major championship wins in their careers: 18 for Nicklaus and 15 for Woods.
The 2025 Masters is the 89th playing of the event.
