Davis Love III didn’t veer too far off script when rounding out his 2022 U.S. Presidents Cup team on Wednesday. Love named six captain’s picks to complete his team of 12, selecting Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa, Max Homa, Billy Horschel, Cameron Young and Kevin Kisner.
Love’s picks consisted of few surprises. With Will Zalatoris bowing out of the event with an injury, five of the six captain’s picks were the next five players in the points standings. Love bypassed Tom Hoge and J.T. Poston to pick Kisner. Hoge and Poston have never played in a Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup while Kisner, 38, is known for his match-play prowess.
The selections give the Americans a dangerous team in an event they have long dominated, owning an 11-1-1 all-time record.
Spieth and Morikawa have combined for five major titles, Horschel won the Memorial a few months ago, Homa won twice last season (and won at the host course, Quail Hollow Club, in 2019) and Young is the front-runner to win PGA Tour Rookie of the Year.
The six captain’s picks join auto-qualifiers Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Sam Burns, Justin Thomas and Tony Finau on the team.
Captain Trevor Immelmann finalized his International team with six captain’s picks on Tuesday.
The Presidents Cup is Sept. 23-25 at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C.
