U.S. Open field: Updates on who’s in and who’s out

The 9th at Winged Foot.

The 2020 U.S. Open field will feature 144 competitors battling it out at Winged Foot.

The first major of the 2020-21 PGA Tour season is upon us (the PGA Championship technically happened last season) as the world’s best have descended on Mamaroneck, N.Y. to tackle Winged Foot Golf Club in what is sure to be a stern U.S. Open test. With the coronavirus pandemic throwing a wrench in qualifying, this year’s field has been filled out strictly by invitation, which is unconventional for an “open” championship, but sometimes you’ve got to play the hand you were dealt.

Despite the all-invitation field, the field still has plenty of amateurs and other longshots. The USGA made it a point to fill out the field as closely as possible to what a normal U.S. Open field would look like. For example, 10 spots were reserved for Korn Ferry Tour players, and 10 more for the top amateurs in the world.

All told, there will be 144 players who peg it this week at Winged Foot. Here’s who’s in and who’s out.

IN

Branden Grace – takes place of Scottie Scheffler

Rory Sabbatini – takes place of Sam Horsfield

Scottie Scheffler WD’d from the field Sunday afternoon after testing positive for Covid-19 prior to his departure from Dallas. He is replaced by Branden Grace, who, coincidentally, was forced to WD from the PGA Championship last month after testing positive for the coronavirus. Sam Horfield was also forced to WD following a positive test result upon arrival to the tournament. Veteran Rory Sabbatini will take his place in the field.

Check out the entire field below, which will be updated throughout the week.
