The Open Championship is officially here. Starting Thursday, some of the best players in the world will tee it up at Royal St. George’s to compete for the title of Champion Golfer of the Year. However, there will be some noticeable absences across the pond.

Because of Covid protocols — as well as other extenuating circumstances — some of the top players in the world will not be teeing it up.

Bubba Watson and Zach Johnson are two marquee names that will not be in the field this week because of Covid protocols. Both players released statements over the past few days indicating they’d withdrawn from the event as a result of contact tracing and positive test protocols.

Tour Confidential: Open Championship hype, Bryson’s new caddie, Olympics forecasting

Si Woo Kim and Sungjae Im are a couple of other top-50 players who won’t make the trek to the U.K. for The Open. The R&A released a statement last week announcing they would each skip the championship in order to focus on the Olympics, which will take place at the end of the month. As Korean nationals, they are required to serve a two-year stint in the military in their home country unless they can bring home an Olympic medal.

The official field list was locked in on Friday, but with players still subject to Covid protocols, there is a chance we could see more movement to the field before then. Check out the current field below.
