Trey McBride learned of massive new contract… while on the golf course

Trey McBride had a massive 2024 season, catching 111 passes for 1,146 yards with two touchdown receptions. He made his first Pro Bowl and, with his current deal expiring soon, had a strong case for a lucrative new contract.

He got it this offseason. And where was he when he learned about it? The golf course.

“I had a couple of missed calls from my agents and I was like, oh man, something is probably heating up,” said McBride, the Arizona Cardinals tight end and guest on this week’s GOLF’s Subpar podcast. “And I’m just out there with a couple of my teammates playing golf just enjoying the day.”

McBride, 25, signed an extension worth $76 million over four years, with $43 million guaranteed. His rookie deal was set to expire at the end of next season.

“I’m out there on the 10th hole trying to finish out a round after I just found out I got this big deal done, so it was exciting but it was fun too,” McBride said. “I’m like, When that cart girl comes back around, get whatever you guys want — I’ll take care of it.” [Laughs]

The deal, which was announced on April 3, made McBride the highest-paid tight end in NFL history.

“It’s crazy. It’s surreal, just everything I’ve been through, all the hard work,” he said. “If you would have told me three years ago, or five years ago I would have been the highest-paid [tight end], I would have probably never believed you.”

Although that “highest-paid” title was short-lived. San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle claimed it with his four-year, $76.4 million extension signed this week.

McBride also discussed his own golf game, the NFL draft, J.J. Watt playing Augusta National, what it’s like teeing it up alongside U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark and more.
