Phil Mickelson has signed a lot of autographs during his PGA Tour career. In fact, he’s famous for it. But he’s probably never signed anything quite as strange as he did Thursday, when Lefty put his name on a woman’s high heels at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Mickelson regularly spends a significant amount of time greeting fans and signing piles of autographs before and after his rounds (unless you’re a young Jordan Spieth, that is). He saddles up to the rope line and waits as dozens of fans shove hats, tournament flags, books, and seemingly anything else they’re carrying on them at him.
The same routine played out Thursday at TPC Scottsdale. While making his way down the fence lined with spectators waiting for his John Hancock, one woman reached out and thrust a particularly unexpected item at Phil: a pair of translucent high heels.
Mickelson paused for a moment in stunned disbelief, before taking the heels from the woman and quickly signing them as the surrounding fans broke out in laughter.
“I’ve been watching you all my life, I really appreciate it,” the woman said, before continuing, “I love you. My parents love you. They’ve been making me watch you all my life.”

As for his play on the course, there’s a reason Phil was in a good enough mood to make bizarre autographs for people. He continued his surprisingly solid start to the year by making four birdies on his way to a three-under 68 in Thursday’s first round. Two weeks ago, he nearly shot a 59 on his way to a T2 finish at the Desert Classic.
