The Masters may be postponed but Augusta National looks plenty ready

Augusta National

The azaleas? In bloom. The greens? Green. Rae’s Creek? Menacing.

The Masters will not be played this week, the season’s first major postponed until Nov. 12-15 due to the coronavirus.

Augusta National appears to be already ready.

On Monday, the tournament’s social media accounts posted 11 photos of the property. Shots of the clubhouse. The second, eighth, 10th, 12th, 13th, 15th 16th and 18th holes. On Instagram, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Bryson DeChambeau were among the pros who liked the reminder of awaits them at the end of the year.

“Quiet scenes from Augusta as the world of golf awaits November 9-15, the intended dates for the 2020 Masters,” the Twitter and Instagram posts said.

Not a footstep in the sand on the par-5 second. Tiger Woods has put few in them — in 22 Masters tournaments, he is 29-under here.

The sun reflects off the mounds protecting the par-5 eighth. They were removed in 1956 to improve sight lines for spectators, but brought back in 1979 under the supervision of Byron Nelson.

The scoreboard overlooking the par-5 15th. No names, no numbers. In 1935, Gene Sarazen holed a 4-wood from 235 yards out for a double eagle here, his “shot heard ‘round the world.” In 2019, Woods took the lead here and never let go.

The par-3 12th, shot from right of the green, with Rae’s Creek to the left and the Hogan Bridge in the background. In 2019, Tiger Woods jumped to a share of the lead here, as playing partner Francesco Molinari dumped his tee shot in the water, evaporating his two-stroke lead.

The 13th green, with azaleas in full bloom in the background. In 2010, Phil Mickelson hit one of the tournament’s best-ever shots here, knocking his second shot, from the pinestraw right of the fairway, to within about 5 feet.
