Tour Will Transform 12th Hole at TPC Sawgrass into Driveable Par 4

December 21, 2015

The Players Championship at the iconic Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass is about to up the thrills.

The PGA Tour’s signature course at Sawgrass will undergo its first major modification in nearly 10 years, according to Gary Smits of The plan? Transform the 358-yard 12th hole into a driveable par 4.

To make it happen, the Tour will shorten the hole significantly with the idea of making the green reachable off the tee for all competitors. Work will begin after the 2016 event, and the new 12th hole will debut at the 2017 Players.

The length will not be the only change. Smits reports details on other planned modifications:

The large bank on the left will be leveled, the green complex will be modified to allow for players to run shots onto the green and there will be a narrow water hazard that will run down the left side of the green.

The Tour’s chief of operations, Andy Pazder, had this to say about the project:

“Of all the great moments in the history of the tournament, you can’t think of too many on the 12th hole. This gives us another opportunity to create excitement earlier on the back nine, instead of waiting for the last three holes.”

If successful, Sawgrass’ par-3 17th hole — with its famed island green — might have to compete for spectators’ attention.
