Tom Hoge had a no-good, not-so-fun week at TPC Sawgrass.

Or, more accurately, maybe he just had a miserable time on the Stadium Course’s par-4 7th hole on Friday.

Hoge made a quintuple-bogey 9 on the 7th during his second round, good for five over par on the hole alone. That was enough to send him toppling down the leaderboard and miss the cut for the first time in his eight Players Championship appearances.

Hoge entered the week as a sneaky pick to play well. Besides never missing a cut here, he tied for 3rd twice in the last three years. He opened with a one-over 73 Thursday and was even for the tournament when he reached the 7th on Friday.

That’s when disaster struck.

He hooked his first shot into the water and had to drop about 50 yards in front of the tee box. He then bladed his next through the rough and into an awkward stance on a hill between the bunker and water.

That was followed by a shank onto the cart path, a pitch out and an approach into a bunker. He blasted out to about 5 feet — but missed the putt. He tapped in for a 9.

Hoge followed up with a bogey on the next hole, and he played the back nine in three over, signing for an eight-over 80, nine-over week and early trip home.
