Tiger Woods announced Monday he’s “not ready” to compete this week and is withdrawing from the Genesis Invitational, an event where he doubles as tournament host.

On Tuesday of last week, Woods announced the death of his mother, Kultida. Three days later it was announced Woods would play in the Genesis Invitational.

Now, he’s out.

“I planned to tee it up this week, but I’m just not ready. I did my best to prepare, knowing it’s what my Mom would have wanted, but I’m still processing her loss,” Woods wrote Monday. “Thanks to everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later in the week and appreciate the continued kindness since my Mom’s passing.”

Woods’ mother, Tida, had a massive influence in not only Tiger’s upbringing but his golf career.

“My Mom was a force of nature all her own, her spirit was simply undeniable,” Woods wrote Tuesday. “She was quick with the needle and a laugh. She was my biggest fan, greatest supporter, without her none of my personal achievements would have been possible. She was loved by so many, but especially by her two grandchildren, Sam and Charlie. Thank you all for your support, prayers and privacy at this difficult time for me and my family. Love you Mom.”

The Genesis was supposed to be Woods’ first official start since the 2024 Open Championship. He had another back surgery in September and didn’t play in the Hero World Challenge (another event he hosts) in December. He competed with his son, Charlie, at the PNC Championship in late December (they lost in a playoff), but that’s 36 holes and on a cart. He’s also competed in two TGL events since then.

Woods withdrew from the Genesis during the second round last year with flu-like symptoms.

This week’s tournament, a Signature Event, was relocated to Torrey Pines in San Diego instead of its normal home at Riviera in Pacific Palisades, Calif., due to the devastating fires in the area.

Jake Knapp was added to the field in Woods’ place.
