There’s rain in the forecast in Honolulu, Hawaii just in time for the final round of the Sony Open. Like, a lot of rain.
So much rain, it seems, the PGA Tour decided it’d be easier to adjust the entirety of the final round of the tournament rather than attempt to wait out more sun. Tournament organizers are taking NO chances that we could be waiting hours (or perhaps even days) to determine a winner at Waialae Country Club due to the weather. Instead, the PGA Tour and Sony Open have elected to move around the tee times and rejigger the tournament schedule in order to allow for an orderly (and sunny) finish to play on Sunday.
The main changes, which were made on Saturday evening, are relatively minor. Whereas Golf Channel had initially blocked off the 4-9:00 p.m. ET block to broadcast the final round of play, the network now believes the tournament will be completed by 8:00 p.m. Rules officials will also allow players to utilize preferred lies throughout the final round to help combat expectedly soggy conditions.
According to The Weather Channel, the storms have already begun in Honolulu, but we can expect a brief break of sunshine this afternoon. Then, around 5:00 p.m. local time, the wet weather will once again pick up, where it is forecasted to continue until late Wednesday evening. Such is life on a tropical island, we suppose.
