Why soccer broadcaster declined Augusta National invite

Former MLS star Taylor Twellman keeps busy between golf and his job as a soccer analyst for Apple TV. Twellman plays golf once a week to keep his competitive juices flowing and get a release from the stresses of work and life.

That has led Twellman to play some of the top courses in the United States, with Oakmont Country Club and Shinnecock Hills topping his list of favorite places where he has teed it up.

But Twellman has not had the opportunity to walk the hallowed fairways of Augusta National, but it’s not because he hasn’t been invited.

Twellman was the latest guest on GOLF’s Subpar podcast, and he told co-hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz why he had to turn down an invitation to play at Augusta National.

“Do I tell people publicly that I kind of had to turn down an invite to Augusta National?” Twellman asked Knost and Stoltz.

But he had a good reason.

“I’m actually the only one that played at the [American Century Celebrity Golf Championship] that has to work for a living,” Twellman said. “So when I got an invite to play Augusta, I had to do England vs. Italy in the European Championships at Wembley. I didn’t have a choice to say, ‘You know what, I can’t do the final because someone invited me to play Augusta.’ I promise you I won’t get that invite again.”

Twellman is a better employee than most. There’s no telling how many diehard golfers would have done everything possible to avoid their work responsibilities for the chance to play Augusta National.

But don’t feel bad for Twellman. He has played several iconic courses and, despite his contention, will likely find his way to get another invite to Augusta National.
