The 30-second guide to the Shriners: Who won, why it matters and more

November 4, 2018

Bryson DeChambeau battled Lucas Glover, Patrick Cantlay, Sam Ryder and others down the stretch in Las Vegas. Here’s what you missed in the final round of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

Who won: Bryson DeChambeau (five-under 66, 21 under overall)

Why it matters: DeChambeau, 25, has won three times in his last five starts (including three times in the last four months). He’s now 3 for 3 in converting 54-hole leads or co-leads. It’s his fifth PGA Tour victory.

How it happened: DeChambeau entered the day tied with Peter Uihlein at 16 under, but when DeChambeau reached the 9th green he was in a four-way tie at the top at 17 under. He went birdie-birdie on 9 and 10 to jump ahead, but Cantlay, last year’s Shriners champ, made birdies on 15 and 16 to get to 20 under and take the lead. That lasted until DeChambeau drained an eagle putt from 57 feet, 7 inches on 16, which followed a Cantlay bogey on 17. DeChambeau made pars on 17 and 18 to shoot 66, beating Cantlay, who birdied 18, by one.

Notables: Rickie Fowler made six back-nine birdies to shoot 63 and take the early clubhouse lead at 17 under. It was the lowest final round of Fowler’s career. Gary Woodland also shot 63, Tony Finau fired a 68 and Jordan Spieth closed with a one-over 72.

Best closing round: Sam Ryder birdied the 18th for a nine-under 62 to finish 19 under, taking the clubhouse lead from Fowler.

Best closing round fashion statement: Also Sam Ryder.

Best shot when it mattered: DeChambeau, 16th hole, for eagle and the lead… money.

Worst shot when it mattered: Cantlay, with a one-stroke lead, hit it fat coming out of the bunker on 17 and it led to a bogey. Minutes later DeChambeau made an eagle to flip the script.

Best walked-in putt: Beau Hossler.

Up next: The Tour heads south to Playa del Carmen, Mexico, for the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Spieth, Fowler and Finau highlight the field.
