Winning an Open Championship is one thing.

But winning an Open Championship less than a four-hour’s drive from where you grew up?

That’s the can’t-script-it fantasy that Shane Lowry lived out in 2019 when he won the claret jug at Royal Portrush, in Northern Ireland, a couple of hundred miles north of his childhood home in County Offaly.

In July, the Open will return to the wild-and-woolly links where Lowry cruised to a six-shot victory over Tommy Fleetwood, and, as Lowry tells it, he’s looking forward to soaking in every moment of the week.

In the lead-up to the third playing of the Open at Portrush, Lowry sat down with GOLF senior writer Dylan Dethier to discuss his Irish roots, his indoctrination to the game and what one part of the 2025 Open at Portrush he is most excited about.

You can hear it all in the video above. For the full version of Dethier’s interview with Lowry, check back on GOLF.com during Open week.
