Scottie Scheffler’s best quality? Analyst says it’s ‘light years’ ahead of others

When Scottie Scheffler won the Procore Championship on Sunday, he became the second player in 40 years to win at least six tournaments in multiple seasons, joining — you guessed it — Tiger Woods.

The World No. 1 has been unstoppable. Over the last few years he’s piled up victories and accolades. “Kind of wish Scottie wasn’t here,” Lanto Griffin joked on Sunday after finishing two shots behind Scheffler in Napa.

But oddly enough, Scheffler’s greatest strength might not even be his physical gifts.

Golf Channel’s Johnson Wagner joined this week’s episode of GOLF’s Subpar podcast to discuss his TV gig and next week’s Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. But due to Scheffler adding yet another victory to his resume, he became a topic too.

“The dude works harder than anybody, he is more competitive than anybody, he seems more grounded at home and happy with his home life than anybody,” Wagner said. “When I would win PGA Tour events, I would celebrate pretty hard and maybe not have a couple of good weeks after, other than maybe one time. Scottie puts the win in the rearview mirror immediately. He just wants to go out and whatever that next week he’s going to play, he starts over fresh and he’s going to try and win that one.

“I think his physical skills are obviously higher than anybody right now, but his mind is light-years ahead of anybody.”

And the scary part? He might just be getting better.

“I think we are just at the very tip of the iceberg when it comes to Scottie’s dominance,” Wagner said. “I just don’t see him going anywhere for at least the next six or seven years.”

Wagner, however, said there might be one way to stop Scheffler, poking fun at his December injury that sidelined him from a couple of tournaments.

“I think having him try to do some sort of ravioli cooking clinic would be the only way you can slow him down,” he said.
