We’ve reached the halfway point at the 2020 Safeway Open, the first tournament of the new PGA Tour season, and now the real fun begins with Round 3 on Saturday. Here’s what you need to know to watch the third round.
Previewing Safeway Open Round 3
Phil Mickelson didn’t look good in Round 1 on Thursday (71), but one day made a whole lot of difference. At risk of missing the cut and heading home early on Friday, Mickelson found the game that earned him a win in his Champions Tour debut, putting together a flawless round of five-under 67. That moved Phil to six under for the tournament, well within the cut line, and only nine shots off the lead.
The leader after two rounds is 24-year-old Sam Burns. Burns recorded only one top-10 last season, but he’s on track to match that in the first event of the new one. Burns backed up his opening-round 64 with a seven-under 67 on Friday to take a two-shot lead.
The man in sole possession of second place after 36 holes is Harry Higgs, but it took some fireworks to get him there. Higgs arrived at his final hole of Round 2, the par-5 9th hole a Silverado Resort, in great shape, seven under for the day and 10 under for the tournament. But the best was yet to come. Higgs incredibly holed his 230-yard second shot for a rare albatross, instantly moving him to 13 under, just ahead of a group of players at 12 under.
