Rory McIlroy, Niall Horan Team Up for European Tour Flagship Event

May 5, 2015

A unique cross section of golf fans are rejoicing: Rory McIlroy and One Direction’s Niall Horan will be playing together again.

The European Tour released a statement highlighting the world No. 1’s group for the BMW PGA Championship Celebrity Pro-Am at Wentworth Club in Surrey, England, which will include popstar Horan and Manchester United and England football legends Phil Neville and Paul Scholes. All three will be making their celebrity pro-am debuts.

McIlroy tweeted the announcement Tuesday, May 5. He was quoted in the release saying:

“Niall and I had a good fun together in the Par 3 contest at the Masters and I’m looking forward to seeing him again at Wentworth, without the boiler suit. It should be a great fourball with Phil and Paul playing too, and it should appeal to a wide range of fans.”

Horan, who caddied for McIlroy at this year’s Par 3 Contest at Augusta National, told the European Tour he was excited to team up with McIlroy again.

“I can’t wait to play with Rory, Phil and Paul,” Horan said in the release. “It’s going to be a great event. I know how prestigious the BMW PGA Championship is as The European Tour’s flagship event, so the opportunity to play in the Pro-Am with my mate Rory and two legends of football is going to be amazing—what a team!

“That said, I’ve heard there are pretty big crowds there on the day, I’m used to those but not when I’m on a golf course,” he continued. “I’ll probably be more nervous at Wentworth than I was performing in front of thousands with 1D, so I’m hoping Rory will give me a few tips on calming the nerves. I love golf, it’s a fantastic sport for all ages and I would urge young people to get out there and give it a go.”

If tour execs are looking for a way to get the younger generation involved in golf, they’ve hit the jackpot with the Horan/McIlroy combo. The Internet exploded with a whole new demographic of “golf lovers” when Horan donned Augusta’s white jumpsuit back in April; Directioners loved it.

McIlroy, the defending champ of the BMW PGA Championship, will tee it up with Horan May 20. Despite another caddie job, there’s no further word on whether McIlroy will live up to his promise of joining One Direction on stage in September.
