Rory McIlroy Is Heavy Favorite To Win Wells Fargo Championship

May 13, 2015

Rory McIlroy doesn’t seem to be getting fatigued with his busy schedule.

Oddsmakers don’t think it will slow him down, either.

McIlroy begins the Wells Fargo Championship Thursday at Quail Hollow Club as the runaway favorite. lists his chances of winning at 3-to-1, compared to his 6-to-1 mark at next month’s U.S. Open. The 26-year-old picked up his first career PGA Tour win at Quail Hollow in 2010. He missed the cut in 2011, lost a playoff in 2012 and finished T10 and T8 the last two years.

His 3-to-1 line is the most the website has favored a golfer this season since McIlroy was 7-to-2 to win the Honda Classic in his 2015 PGA Tour debut. McIlroy would miss the cut.

This week’s tournament will be the third straight for the world’s top-ranked player, who plans on playing a stretch of at least five straight tournaments leading up to the U.S. Open in June.

McIlroy opened May by winning the WGC-Cadillac Match Play, and last week he tied for eighth at the Players. After the Wells Fargo, he’ll defend his title at the BMW PGA Championship in England before he headlines the Irish Open at the end of May.

If he plans to play a sixth tournament in a row, it will likely be at the Memorial on June 4-7. He hasn’t committed yet, but he has played in Jack Nicklaus’ event the past five years. The tournament is just two weeks before the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay.

McIlroy will certainly not be rusty.
