The third round of the Players Championship saw players’ scores skyrocket, but Ken Duke wasn’t one of them.
After pros picked apart the Stadium Course on Thursday and Friday, the field average for Saturday’s third round was 75.8. Yet the 47-year-old Duke fired a 7-under 65 and starts Sunday tied for second and four shots behind Jason Day.
Day was one of several players who couldn’t believe what Duke did on a day when Sawgrass brought most pros to their knees.
“What course was Ken Duke playing today?” Day said. “Can anyone tell me? Was he playing across the road? I mean it was just, to be able to shoot that score is better — I think that should be the course record. It was just an absolute joke.”
Other Tour pros sounded off on Twitter.
