The Players Championship’s final round was to continue at 5:15 p.m. ET Sunday after play was halted at 1:15 p.m. ET due to storms in the Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida area.
Play had started early and in threesomes on Sunday in hopes of avoiding a stoppage. But with the leaders on the 11th hole, the stoppage horn was sounded.
“We’ve been reviewing this weather for three or four days and unfortunately it’s held its pattern and it looks like this line of storms are going to be quite intense,” PGA Tour rules official Stephen Cox told pgatour.com on Saturday.
At the time of the stoppage, Rory McIlroy led by a stroke and was playing the 12th hole. A stroke back of McIlroy was 54-hole leader J.J. Spaun, and Tom Hoge, Akshay Bhatia and Danny Walker were two shots back.
“Obviously our preferred desire is to have one tee in two(somes) and this is the awkward balance that we face,” Cox told pgatour.com. “If we do roll the dice, as they say, and try and play off one tee in two(somes), we could easily find ourselves in a Monday finish.”
Sunset in Ponte Vedra Beach is at 7:34 p.m.
