Olympics 2016: Haru Nomura of Japan Misses Tap-In Putt

August 17, 2016

The ball’s not in the hole until the ball’s in the hole. Japanese golfer Haru Nomura learned that lesson the hard way Wednesday in Rio during Round 1 of the women’s golf competition.

On the 11th hole, after missing her birdie putt, Nomura walked over to tap in for par, with the ball just a couple of inches from the hole. But instead she mostly missed the ball, and it barely moved at all. She had to settle for bogey.

Nomura is currently T-12, four shots behind leader Carlota Ciganda, of Spain. South Korea’s Inbee Park and Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn are both at five under and T-2. Nomura’s teammate Shiho Oyama is T-19 after carding a 70.

This isn’t the first eye-popping putting gaffe in the Rio Games. In the men’s event last week, Bubba Watson did this.
