Why Nelly Korda’s favorite moment on the course isn’t about her

It’s no secret the Kordas are one of the great sports families right now.

Father Petr and mother Regina were both professional tennis players in the 1980s and 1990s with Petr having won the 1998 Australian Open and reaching as high as No. 2 in the world.

Daughters Jessica and Nelly have both become forces on the LPGA Tour. Jessica broke through for her first LPGA win at the 2012 Women’s Australian Open just before her 19th birthday while Nelly put together a banner 2021, winning the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, the 2020 Olympic Gold Medal and reaching No. 1 in the world rankings.

And lest we forget, the youngest Korda child, Sebastian, has followed in his parents’ footsteps, becoming a professional tennis player. Sebastian won the 2018 Junior Boys’ Australian Open title exactly 20 years after his father won the men’s title.’ Australian Open title exactly 20 years after his father won the men’s title.

So it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise when asked in the latest episode of The Scoop with Claire Rogers for her favorite memory of her career, Nelly recalled a moment involving her family. In fact, it wasn’t even about her.

“The most proud I have ever been was watching my sister — obviously, her rookie year in 2011 wasn’t the easiest,” Nelly said. “And then seeing her go to Australia for a month, playing on the Australian Tour, a couple of events, and then getting into the Women’s Australian Open and winning in a six-way playoff.

“I think that to me has been by far the best memory. Or watching my brother win the junior Australian Open or the one ATP event that he’s won.

“Nothing like seeing them succeed too.”

Nelly also mentioned that winning in front of her parents for the first time in 2021 was memorable but for a family as talented as the Kordas, it’s no surprise that their favorite career memories would involve each other.
