Miguel Angel Jimenez: 5 Reasons Why the Golf World Loves Him

January 5, 2016

Happy birthday, Most Interesting Man in Golf!

That’s right, today is the 52nd birthday of Miguel Angel Jimenez, one of the most beloved players on Tour. What makes him so special? Well, it’s a long list that starts with a little tobacco. Here are our top five reasons why the golf world loves MAJ so much. (If you can’t get enough MAJ, check out this special gallery.)

1. He is totally at peace with his rugged lifestyle.

Our very own Alan Shipnuck spent some time with MAJ last year, revealing that the pro doesn’t care what others think of his drinking and smoking habits. “If I want to have a drink, I have a drink. Why shouldn’t I?” he said. We won’t stop you, Miguel.

2. He’s still very athletic.

Anyone who hasn’t seen MAJ’s quirky warm-up routine has likely been hiding under a rock for years. Still, the 52-year-old continues to contort his body before every round in ways 52-year-old men probably shouldn’t be able to do. Take a look for yourself.

3. He keeps his cool, even when others don’t.

Last season’s WGC-Cadillac Match Play showcased a fun match between Jimenez and Keegan Bradley. Things became a bit heated between the two players on the final hole during a ruling dispute. Jimenez kept cool, though, as expected.

4. He met his wife on the golf course.

As he recalled in that 2015 feature, MAJ met his wife during a professional round he was playing in Austria back in 2011. They married in 2014.

5. He’s loving life on the Champions Tour AND the PGA Tour.

MAJ played six times on the PGA Tour last year, and while he didn’t make the cut in four of them, he’s still playing well enough to be ranked in the top 100 players in the world (92). Keep on keepin’ on, MAJ.
