Club pro Michael Block on what would be a successful week at the Canadian Open

Last month, club pro Michael Block took the golf world by storm.

In a historic performance at the PGA Championship, Block posted one-over 281 for the week to finish T15, besting some of the top players in the world. His week featured candid on-camera interviews, a hole-in-one and a gutsy up-and-down on the 72nd hole to secure a spot in next year’s championship. By week’s end, he’d ascended to cult-hero status.

“My life’s changed, but my life’s only changed in the better,” Block said. “It’s [been] an epic experience.”

Block’s rollercoaster week not only got the attention of golf fans everywhere, but it also got him some notice amongst sponsors. By the time he left Oak Hill, he already had sponsor’s exemptions into two more events.

The first invite, at the Charles Schwab Challenge, ended in a disappointing missed cut. But for someone who makes their living teaching lessons, another week inside the ropes in the big leagues is never a bad thing.

Block’s other sponsor’s exemption came courtesy of the RBC Canadian Open, giving the journeyman a third Tour start in less than a month. And ahead of teeing it up this week north of the border, Block joined GOLF’s Subpar to share what a successful week in Canada would look like.

“Making the cut [would be a successful week],” Block said. “I’ll be very happy making the cut. That would be a huge thing for me. And then obviously making it and playing as well as I can on the weekend.”

Making the cut might seem like a modest goal for a golfer who just placed top 15 in a major, but considering he only has five made cuts in his entire career, playing the weekend is a worthy goal.
