Matthew McConaughey Cheers On Team USA at Men’s Olympic Golf Event

August 12, 2016

Matthew McConaughey has been one of Team USA’s most notable fans at Rio this week, and on Friday, he took his fandom to the golf course.

The 46-year-old actor has been all over the Games so far, appearing alongside his wife, Camila Alves, in the stands for swimming, rugby and basketball events. He showed up solo at the golf course to brave the poor weather today in Rio, rocking an old-school driver’s cap that would make Francis Ouimet proud. At one point he even took “a little walk with Rickie,” as McConaughey described it to Golf Digest.

“I’m obviously over here rooting on the red, white and blue,” McConaughey told the website. “Two, I’m over here, my wife’s Brazilian, so I came over here to root for this country to pull it off, which I think they’re doing a pretty good job of that. And for golf, this would be the closest thing to the Ryder Cup.”

McConaughey is a big-time golfer himself. He played high school golf in Texas and owns a single-digit handicap. Perhaps he can invigorate a lagging U.S. team: there’s only one American player in the top-10 at the moment.
