Mason Howell explains viral U.S. Amateur celebration

Mason Howell can’t really explain why he did it or what it means. But when the U.S. Amateur champion went 7 up on Jackson Herrington in the championship match, he saw his friend and had to become the latest to do the viral “6 7” celebration.

The “6 7” trend is a viral meme based on the song “Doot Doot (6 7)” by Skrilla. The viral trend has become popular on TikTok, and many celebrities, including WNBA star Paige Bueckers, have gotten in on the meme.

Howell became the latest to take part in the trend during his dominant victory at Olympic Club.

“The middle schoolers at school are really hazing me for that one,” Howell told GOLF’s Subpar co-hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz. “I couldn’t even explain it. It’s something in a song. It’s probably one of the dumbest things that has ever blown up. But it has so much popularity wth kids my age and younger.

“I don’t know. Whenever those two numbers are put together, people just put their hands up and down like that. One of my buddies that flew out to watch the championship match, it was right after I went 7 up, he just went like that (moves hands up and down) and I did it back. I didn’t realize the camera was on me. Somebody put it on TikTok and it went viral.”

Howell, who is committed to play for Georgia in 2026, beat Herrington 7 and 6 to surpass Tiger Woods as the third-youngest player to win the U.S. Amateur in history.
