Country music star shares what it’s like playing with Jordan Spieth

The Pebble Beach Pro-Am is always a treat for golf fans. Not only do they get a chance to see the beauty of the famed seaside links each February, but they also get to watch celebs team up with golfers in the pro-am competition. There’s no bigger week on the calendar for the intersection of golf and pop culture.

Country music star Jake Owen is a mainstay in the celeb field for the pro-am. As an avid golfer, the musician always makes time in his busy schedule to venture to the Monterey Peninsula each year to tee it up alongside the pros.

Making the event even more enticing is the fact that Owen’s Tour pro partner is one of the most famous in the game in Jordan Spieth. On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Subpar, Owen gave a little insight into what it’s like teaming up with the three-time major winner each year at Pebble Beach.

“He’s a great, incredible guy,” Owen said. “He’s an incredible talent.”

Owen and Spieth have played together in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am annually since Spieth first played in the event in 2013, and the two have developed quite the rapport in the time since.

“To watch him grow — to watch him go from the new guy, to winning a Masters and winning a U.S. Open and winning majors and being a father, and now post fatherhood, winning again — watching this ride, I really enjoy watching that,” Owen said. “I look at it as a treat to play with him.”

In their time playing alongside each other, Spieth has won the event once — in 2017 — and finished inside the top 10 five other times.
