American Century Championship preview

The American Century Championship has become the premier celebrity amateur golf event, with the field for the annual tournament held at Edgewood Tahoe Resort on the shores of beautiful Lake Tahoe gaining more and more star power every year. That’s mostly thanks to star athletes from other sports joining in on the fun. Lots of them.

Among the glitzy list of competitors are 15 Cy Young winners and multiple NFL Hall of Famers and MVPs, including the current MVP Aaron Rodgers, who just teamed with Bryson DeChambeau to defeat Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady in The Match 4 early this week. Brady will also make the trip to Tahoe, along with Charles Barkley, Annika Sorenstam, Steph Curry and many, many more.

American Century Championship format

The event consists of three rounds of competition, but it’s not the standard stroke-play affair we’re used to seeing on the PGA Tour. Instead, the American Century Championship makes use of a modified stableford format, where the goal is score the most points.

Players will receive six points for an eagle, three points for a birdie, one point for a par, zero points for a bogey and negative two points for a double or worse. Should someone make a hole-in-one they get eight points, but an albatross is the most valuable, worth a hefty 10 points. Former pro tennis player Mardy Fish won the 2020 event with a final score of 76.
