The extra-long wait is over, and it’s finally time for the 2021 Open Championship at Royal St. George’s, the first Open since 2019. Here’s everything you need to know to watch the tournament all week long.
Open Championship preview
For just the second time in recent history, the Open will represent the final men’s major of the pro golf season. For many years, the PGA Championship played that role, relegating the Open to the second-to-last major. But beginning in 2019, the PGA Championship moved from August to May, handing the Open its prestigious spot at the end of the major calendar.
In 2019, Irishman Shane Lowry triumphed at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, creating one of the most jubilant moments in golf history. Two years later, Lowry remains the defending champion, thanks to last year’s postponement of this 149th Open due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic is still here, and several players were forced to withdraw from this week’s tournament due to positive tests or complications with safety protocols.
But the Open charges forward, with thousands of spectators expected to be in attendance. Newly-minted U.S. Open champion Jon Rahm is the odds-on favorite to win his second major heading into the week. But plenty of big-name players have high hopes, including Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and more.
