Justin Thomas wasted little time before taking a friendly shot at golf’s newest major champ, Wyndham Clark.
Thomas, Clark and Max Homa were grouped together for this week’s Travelers Championship. While Homa and Thomas missed the cut at last week’s U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club, you may remember that Clark made a clutch par on the 72nd hole to beat Rory McIlroy by one and claim his first major title.
That aforementioned trio was a featured group on ESPN+ on Thursday morning, and on the 12th hole — their third of the day — all three players hit their tee shots in a similar spot on the par-4.
Thomas was 66 yards out but in the rough, Homa was 69 yards away and Clark 74 yards out. Thomas played first, wedging it to 10 feet just below the hole. Clark was next, but before he hit he needed Thomas to mark his ball, just in case.
Thomas’ response? The clip has since been removed from social media, but you can hear Thomas quip: “Guy wins one f—— U.S. Open and I got to mark it from 80 yards?”
It’s worth noting, however, this was a joke, and not Thomas muttering to himself in disgust. The ESPN+ stream showed Thomas talking and looking toward Clark and Homa while walking to the green, and Homa, Clark and Clark’s caddie, John Ellis, all laughed.
