Adam Scott has been around a while now, but even he notices. Ahead of this week’s Genesis Invitational, he was asked about the event’s newly granted designated status and whether things felt “different,” and he said they hadn’t.

But $20 mill? That jumps off the page.

“I think this particular tournament had some elevated status already — the three invitationals were held in high regard by the players, but also by the bigger exemptions and things like that,” Scott said. “So this tournament, the last several years, has certainly had that elevated feel about it.

“Now it’s obviously designated and has a bigger purse as well, so I mean, it’s good to be here this week, yes.”

He then smiled. That was understandable.

As the third designated event of the PGA Tour’s season — following the season-opening Tournament of Champions and last week’s WM Phoenix Open — the purse is elevated. The 68 players who made the cut in Los Angeles will split a $20 million pot, with the winner bringing home $3.6 million.

Last year? The purse was $12 million, with the champion, Joaquin Niemann, earning $2.16 million.
