Dustin Johnson Elects to Skip Olympic Golf Competition

July 9, 2016

Dustin Johnson is the first American to pull out of Olympic consideration, citing concerns about the Zika virus.

In a statement released by Golf Channel, Johnson said “Paulina and I plan to have more children in the near future, and I feel it would be irresponsible to put myself, her or our family at risk. I believe I am making the right decision for me and most importantly, my family.”

Johnson was the top ranked American by Olympic qualifying standards and has now made space for Patrick Reed to represent the United States. Reed said recently he would “definitely play” if he received such a phone call. The American team would now be made up of Reed, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler.
