CJ Cup Byron Nelson Subpar picks: 2 players to watch in Texas

How different will TPC Craig Ranch play for this week’s CJ Cup Byron Nelson? We are about to find out.

TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas, has hosted the Byron Nelson since 2021, and the best players in the world have, well, torched it. The winning score the past four years has been between 23 and 26 under, although the course was renovated by Lanny Wadkins after last year’s tournament.

Subpar podcast co-host and CBS Sports on-course reporter Colt Knost said he talked to a few players and a rules official about the changes.

“Apparently they have over-seeded this golf course, which is not normal for here,” Knost said. “They have brought the fairways in; it is minimum four-inch rough everywhere, so I think we could see a much different TPC Craig Ranch this year. They normally shoot the grass off this place, but looks a little different. … If we don’t get any rain, we could see a much more difficult golf course.”

As for Fanatics Sportsbook picks for the week, Knost selected Sungjae Im to top 10 (+260), and Subpar co-host Drew Stoltz picked Stephan Jaeger to top 20 (+175).

“[Jaeger] is a guy that seems to play well on big, open, wide golf courses,” Stoltz said. “Some of his best finishes this year — Mexico Open, that’s like that, the Houston Open, he’s won there and he played well again there this year. … He’s gotten way longer over the last few years and he’s a guy who can rattle off birdies in bunches.”

Scottie Scheffler is the betting favorite to win at +280. Jordan Spieth has the next-best odds at +1800.
