Cam Smith created a buzz on Wednesday at Augusta National but not with his clubs.
The 2022 Open Champion wore a blue blazer during his final day preparing for the 2025 Masters, which included a practice round.
There’s no doubt Smith hopes to don a different colored jacket on Sunday at sunset, but the famed green jacket was not the inspiration behind Smith’s bold wardrobe choice.

As is often the case, Occam’s razor guides us to the correct explanation for the fashion phenomenon.
“Funny story,” Smith said on Thursday after shooting a one-under-par 71 to open the Masters. “I met Charlie, the Greyson guy, at teams week this week, and we had a couple of beers and maybe even a couple too many beers, and we got to talking about fashion. He said, ‘it would be great if you wore a blazer at the Masters. I think it’s the place to do it,’ and I agreed to it. I’m a man of my word, so I did it. It was actually good, though. I mean, for how a sport coat or a blazer should feel, that one I was able to swing in pretty easy. It was a bit chilly, so it kind of worked out.”
Smith’s friend and countryman Jason Day was a fan of the unique look.
“I think it looked great,” Day said after shooting a two-under 70 on Thursday. “If he rocks it, then I’m happy for him. I actually went up to him and felt it and felt his pants. I’m like, if he can play in it, great. I would have buttoned it up. I would have had at least buttoned up, but he played with it open. I don’t mind it. I could see myself playing in something like that. So just putting it out there.”
Smith didn’t have his best stuff on Thursday at Augusta National, but the Australian was able to keep it on the tracks and get it in the house at one under, thanks to a closing birdie at No. 18.
The LIV Golf star has a great track record at Augusta National. He has carded top-10 finishes in five of his last seven starts, including a T2 in 2020 and a T3 in 2022.
After a “scrappy day” with his irons, Smith knows he’ll need to be sharper to rise up the leaderboard and have a chance at the green jacket on Sunday. Otherwise, his blue blazer will be the only noteworthy sport coat in his 2025 trip to Augusta.
“For how I felt out there, it felt like it was going to be a bit of a long day. All in all, pretty pleased with the score. If I’m going to win this thing, I definitely need to do better than that. Golf is such a weird game. I feel like my last round last week at Doral was probably the best I’ve hit it in a long time, and coming out here today is probably the worst I’ve hit it in a long time.”
