The Los Angeles area has seen a lot of USGA championship action over the last few years, beginning in 2017, with the U.S. Amateur at Riviera and the Walker Cup at Los Angeles Country Club, and continuing with the 2018 the Women’s Amateur Four Ball, staged at El Caballero CC in nearby Tarzana.
USGA awards Paula Creamer special exemption into U.S. Women’s Open at Olympic Club
On Wednesday, the USGA announced that the Southern California hotspot will continue to stay busy over the next several years, as a prestigious venue is gaining three more championship berths. Bel-Air Country Club will host the 2023 U.S. Women’s Amateur, the 2026 Curtis Cup Match (a biennial women’s golf event contested by teams from the United States and Great Britain & Ireland) and the 2030 U.S. Mid-Amateur. These events will mark the third, fourth and fifth USGA championships in Bel-Air’s history. The club previously hosted the 1976 U.S. Amateur and the 2004 Senior Amateur, and served as a co-host with Riviera during the stroke-play portion of the 2017 U.S. Amateur.
“Bel-Air is one of the country’s most prestigious courses, steeped in golf history, and we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate three more USGA championships there,” USGA Senior Managing Director of Championships John Bodenhamer said in a press release.
Ranked No. 68 on GOLF’s 2020-21 list of the Top 100 Courses in the U.S., Bel-Air is heralded as a classic George C. Thomas design. A recent restoration by Tom Doak removed more than 30 bunkers, making the course more than ready for the upcoming spotlight.
