Retired Super Bowl champ on life after football, the golf bug and more

A.Q. Shipley’s playing days are over but he by no means is less busy — he has tee times to try and squeeze in. The former NFL center and father of three (all under 7 years old) stills works in the game (a regular on The Pat McAfee Show) and, more importantly, tries to play as much golf as he can.

He recently added a golf simulator to the kids’ play room and tries to sneak in practice or rounds like most dads — after daycare drop-off and before pickup.

“The swing is OK; I’m going to get a lot better,” said Shipley, a 9 handicap who was the guest on this week’s GOLF Subpar podcast. “I pound it off the tee, driver is the best club in the bag. I’m carrying it 300.”

He says his accuracy still needs work (“I can’t control the face,” he says) but recently shot an 81 during a two-day trip to Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, one of the best and most lavish golf courses in the United States.

“The drive up has like Augusta feels,” Shipley said. “You are driving through there and you are like, oh, where am I going. It was unbelievable. It was too good. Just the whole experience was incredible.”

Shipley also watches a ton of golf. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native was even at the U.S. Open at Oakmont and tunes in to all the events, especially the majors and FedEx Cup Playoffs.

For more from Shipley, including his thoughts on what it’s like playing in the NFL, his all-time roster of teammates and what he learned playing with Tom Brady (they won a Super Bowl together in 2021), listen here or watch the YouTube video below.
