U.S. Open money: Total purse, payout breakdown and winner’s share

A U.S. Open champion will be crowned later today at Oakmont, but the only question remaining is who that might be.

Sam Burns heads into the final round at four under, leading Adam Scott and J.J. Spaun by one, with Viktor Hovland lurking three back. Those are the only players under par at a brutal Oakmont.

The veteran Scott is the only player in the top 10 with a major championship victory, which came 12 years ago at the 2013 Masters; however, it’s Hovland who is the only player in the Official World Golf Ranking’s top 15.

Burns will still be the favorite as a five-time PGA Tour winner, but he hasn’t performed well in the final rounds of majors. He entered the final round of last year’s Open Championship tied for second but shot 80 and finished T31 at Royal Troon.

Rory McIlroy-Patrick Cantlay U.S. Open pairing’s awkward backstory
By: Alan Bastable

Whoever wins Sunday night will take home a huge payday. The USGA announced that this U.S. Open will offer a $21.5 million purse with $4.3 million going to the winner. That’s tied with last year’s U.S. Open for the largest ever first-place check awarded at a major. The top-four finishers all win at least a million dollars, with the runner-up receiving $2.322 million.

Scottie Scheffler won $3.42 million at the PGA Championship last month, and Rory McIlroy won $4.2 million at the Masters in April.

You can check out the complete payout breakdown for the 2025 U.S. Open below, which you can watch on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET on USA and 12-7 p.m. on NBC.
